"As soon as you step onto the beautiful campus, you can see the pride the students take in their work, and you can feel the ohana. All of the students, no matter their age, help each other. Dr. Ramos is often seen all over the school talking to all the students and checking in on the teachers. He truly cares for the staff and the students, and it shows. We are lucky to have him!"

Your name came to mind after so many years (50) and I decided to google you to see how and what you are doing. I'm very impressed beyond words. What a life journey you've had.
To refresh your memory, we were friends in NYC in the early 1970s (1971?). I think we met at the Urban League (?) summer job, or something like that. We spent a lot of time together and did a lot of things (I can detail). Both of us were math majors, you at Manhattan College and me at City College.
You may remember that I was hard of hearing since early childhood and now wear hearing aids (am nearly deaf without them). I think about learning ASL, but don't know anyone else who knows it with whom I could communicate.
Now I'm effectively (semi-) retired. More of my story is on LinkedIn (Name: G. Jack Theurer) if you're on there too.

I have been working as an educational assistant for Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (HSDB) for 10 years. When Dr. Angel Ramos was hired to be our principal, he took his time to meet everyone at HSDB. He supported and believed in students and staff. I could see that he had been changing students' life and opening students' eyes. He was a great Deaf role model. He was one of my group who encouraged me to go to a graduate school for studying a Master's degree in Deaf Education. He gave me an opportunity to teach Deaf students Mathematics. He believed in me. Without his support and encouragement, I may be same person.
Dr. Angel Ramos is our greatest trailblazer. He believes in our own accomplishments. His wise words inspire us always. Dr. Angel Ramos is our LIFECHANGER OF THE YEAR if he is not selected!!
Dr. Angel is a role model in my school. He talks to me about my future. He believes in me. I want to become successful person like him.

Dr. Angel Ramos is an excellent candidate for Life Changer of the Year. Dr. Ramos has had a positive impact not only on myself, but my students as well. Dr. Ramos is supportive, fair and most importantly an strong advocate for students. As a teacher, I know I can openly discuss concerns and issues with him. He always listens and tries to find a solution. A specific example of this is when I was overwhelmed with a large influx of students at once. The students I serve typically have problems with self-control, discipline and respect, so changes to the roster can be challenging. When I shared my concern, Dr. Ramos was an advocate for me to get help in the way of a partner teacher. This has been a positive solution for both myself and the students. Dr. Ramos is very fair, especially when it comes to the students. When administering discipline he does not immediately suspend or give detention but instead counsels the children to help them make better choices in the future. Dr. Ramos has made written contracts with the most troubled of students and the results are promising. He follows up and talks to the students regularly. This shows he really cares about them. Dr. Ramos wants the students to succeed. Although he is a very busy administrator, he personally tutors students. One example of this is a student who needs to recover a credit in math to graduate. He meets with her several times a week to teach her the missing work. Beyond the actual math problems, this girl has now been given hope to go to high school on time. She has shared with me how important this goal is to her and how grateful she is for the extra help from Dr. Ramos. It is for these reasons, among others, that I highly recommend Dr. Angel Ramos for Life Changer of the Year.
I first met Dr. Angel about 8 years ago when he was my supervisor and Superintendent of New Jersey School for the Deaf. He brought a wealth of knowledge and experience and enriched my life. He served as a great mentor to me during my journey as an administrator. This is extremely rare in the Deaf Community to have an excellent Deaf mentor in the field of leadership especially while working with hearing counterparts. He is a true educator at heart and has touched the lives of many people. I support him as a Kife Changer of the Year because he has had to break down the cultural and communication barriers, worked doubly hard in order to achieve high standard of work as is expected of his hearing counterparts, while at same time encouraging others through mentor ship to achieve the same standards!
I met Dr. Ramos this school year and it has been absolutely wonderful knowing an administrator that truly cares for this students and co-workers. He has been extremely supportive of me and my "difficult" students. He gives students the chance they deserve and he is never reactive towards students or staff. Dr. Ramos is a great mentor and administrator, anyone that has been able to have him apart of their team should consider themselves fortunate.

I have known Dr. Ramos for a few years. In that time, I have worked with him on many occasions and have always seen a positive attitude. He shows respect to all; whether it be children, co-workers, interpreters, staff, administrators, etc. He has a genuine love for the community and is a role model to so many.
Angel works hard to ensure students in Hawaii get a good education while connecting with their Deaf culture. He doesn’t give up on them.
Dr Angel Ramos came to Hawaii with tremendous experience behind him. He immediately went to work to develop the school for the deaf and blind into an outstanding learning community. As a deaf person himself, he readily understood the unique issues faced by his students. He reached out to my school to establish a partnership to provide students from both our schools with an inclusionary experience. Students participated in after-school AYSO soccer together for several years. They also joined our general education students for zumba and other enrichment classes. Dr. Ramos was forward thinking and instrumental in forging this partnership which worked to the benefit of all involved.
Hearing principal can't even lead HSDB to be the accredited public school. Who transforms this, its Dr. Ramos that lead this institution to be accredited in the State of the Hawaii. His leadership from mainland influence HSDB to be normalized standard across the states. He trained his personnel to ensure that children received higher education and results of that. Their students are able to compete in academic bowl, and STEM fields, and these students can prepare for career opportunities. It results of Dr Ramos's leadership. I salute his integrity and personality to make the difference in HSDB.
No matter your age and experience: to partake on a team in which Dr. Angel has lead, and to witness his genuine interest in the well being and continually seek opportunities for others, goes a long way! Dr. Angel's, innovations and visions have pushed through barriers and make true the saying, "The sky's the limit." Fearless and able, Dr. Angel dispells the constraints of "disability." I met Angel about 40 years ago in New York City, when we were both young and loved to play basketball. I was just getting involved with the Deaf Community myself and Angel was already an old pro. In fact, he was the player coach. I played one season and Angel and I parted ways until 3 years ago, when he became Principal of my Deaf School, the Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (HSDB). Again, he is the "player/coach" with a hands on approach to running the school and I am just the player (Vice Principal), following the leader. Once again, Angel is the "old pro" with his 14 years experience of running three other Deaf Schools and I am just learning the ropes. He is a great leader. When we were on the all Deaf basketball team we made it to the playoffs and lost to the eventual champion. At HSDB, we are making great strides with his guidance, passion and support. Although he has already retired from a Superintendent job, he has not lost his passion and he continues to stay ready for new challenges. He is not afraid to "rock the boat" so to speak and speak up on behalf of the Deaf Keiki (children) of Hawaii. His actions can be controversial, but there is no doubting his passion to be a life changer for the Deaf Keiki. I do not mind being his facilitator. In three years he has shook up HSDB in a positive way that opened the eyes of our Deaf Keiki and staff to possibilities. He does this because of his high expectations for the students, their parents and the HSDB staff. If that is not the definition of a life changer, then I don't know what is.

I met Angel when he involved with Deaf President Now 1988. He was important in DPN 1988. His strength was to keep communication intact.

I’ve been working for HSDB for very short time and visit this school regularly. When Dr. Ramos was principal at this school, I could see big difference, lots of positive changes and great achievements. He is one of role models for our kids, us and everyone!
In 1990, I needed Dr. Angel Ramos for many reasons. In the meantime, young deaf children at HSDB certainly need Dr. Ramos so bad. The children look up to a variety of role models. Dr. Ramos is the one who serves as an example and influences others. I was an adolescent immigrant, I struggled to read in English. Dr. Ramos bought some reading comprehension software programs that build my reading skills. He gave me a variety of percent of precious time to learn many new things that change my life and journey.
During three years of high school, I lived with his house, you name it. If I didn't meet him, I would not graduate high school and never go to college. I had wonderful experiences with him because he supported and educated me. He encouraged me to become involved in activities that reflect my values such as volunteering, after school programs etc. Nobody is perfect. When I made some mistakes, he always listened to me without judgment. I am sure Dr. Ramos is modeling for the children and people at HSDB with his big heart. I feel that he deserves to be recognized by his hard work, contributions etc. Administrators must listen to the children at HSDB. Dr. Deaf schools should be lead by deaf educators. I believe that Dr. Ramos is a qualified and excellent leader. Dr. Ramos must return to the school, PRONTO!!!
I am so grateful I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Angel Ramos at the Academic bowl in University High School in Irvine, CA when I was an Admissions Counselor for Gallaudet University. He has inspired me with his story as a first Deaf Puerto Rican who received a doctorate degree at Gallaudet. We love you!

Dr. Ramos is one of a few Latinos in our community with a doctorate degree. In the past several years, he has been working in administrative positions at different day & residential schools all over the east & west coast. His human skills & interpersonal personality is leaving positive changes in students, educators, counselors & administrators. The type of role model deaf programs need in order to thrive. Dr. Angel Ramos saw something in me and gave me an opportunity to get my first start ten years ago at Sequoia School for the Deaf in Mesa, Arizona. There, I was astonished with his ability to connect with all kinds of people and make them believe in themselves. He encouraged me to start the school’s first ever Athletics Program and I then moved on to coach football and run a large athletics program at the California School for the Deaf in Fremont. None of that would have happened if not for him so I am forever indebted to him and continue to practice some of the leadership skills that I’ve learned from him.
Today, countless deaf students are impacted all over America at all of Dr. Ramos’ stops such as because he has had his fingerprints in helping so many more staff like myself believe in themselves. He preaches deaf students to become a great leaders themselves so it’s a no doubt that many of them are becoming a productive member of the society. I think that his administrative skills and ability to create a school culture is second to none. Thank you Angel!

Dr. Angel Ramos is a well known role model for the Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind as well as for the Deaf Community in Hawaii. He was able and still is to make many new changes, to provide and upgrade the academic environment for the student body who will someday go out and make a difference to the world. After a year of witnessing his magic not only within his office but school-wide and with the community at large was when I knew how fortunate to have him around.

Without him, Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind wouldn’t have American Sign Language assessment or school data to keep track of all student’s language acquisition. Dr. Angel Ramos as LifeChanger of the Year? Absolutely without a doubt! I was hired by him at Sequoia School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing back in 2004 as an Art Teacher and Aide. I loved having him as my boss since it is such a rarity to have a Deaf administrator with someone who has a similar background with the rest of the Deaf community.
A few years flew by, it does seem like he has the magic of not having a bad day. Everything is in order. Everything seems to be brighter on any ordinary day. His magic seem to enhance even more with Sequoia School for the Deaf to revamp the system to be accessible for Deaf students, raising the standards bars striving for succession and increasing quota with Deaf students annually. Dr. Angel Ramos continues to do the same for other schools wherever he goes and finds himself in the beautiful island of Oahu.
My life was enhanced by him, my son's life and now my daughter had a chance with Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind under his administration. I can't thank him enough for being a big life-changer for three of us. I didn't know about this Life Changer Of The Year award do exist out there and had to smile from ear to ear because I know he is a greatest example. I had the fortune of working with him for several years when we both worked at the SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID) which is now known as SouthWest College for the Deaf (SWCD) in Big Spring, Texas. Dr. Angel Ramos was my first boss. I worked for him when I was 11 years old. He paid be a hefty bucks for fall cleaning insidehis house and his backyard. It was the first time I learned about earning wages and what are included in the wage. I learned that I have to meet the expectation of a job description. About 30 years later, I have him as my boss again. I was truly inspired to be under his wings again.
He knows how to make roots grow and let them fly. In my 30 years of experience watching Dr. Angel grow and expand deaf community. He has the skill. He did not have to continue and enjoy his retirement. He choose to come back and work for Hawaii. We desperately need great leader like him.
He understands island life because he's Puerto Rican. He has great perspective of island life and loves his people here.
He is certainly a life changed from a 11 years old girl to an activist.

I concur with many other commenters below in support of Dr. Angel Ramos. I remember HSDB (Hawai'i School for the Deaf and the Blind) used to be in its dark age when it was under a hearing principal with severe lack of knowledge in Deaf education (it is nothing similar to the "Special Education"; if they were similar, then we would never have a discipline in Deaf education otherwise), especially the bilingual-bicultural approach where it flourishes at HSDB because all of our students are exposed to two languages: American Sign Language for communication and English for reading and writing. Many issues came up that we cannot resolve quickly. That dark age vanished when Dr. Ramos was appointed as the new principal back in 2016.
I have been working at HSDB since the fall semester of 2011 and I started off as a substitute educational assistant, then substitute teacher for many school years. Dr. Ramos was the one who heavily advocated me to reach where I am now, a full-time teacher. He unanimously supported me when I was working toward my post-baccalaureate certificate in Deaf education. It was a gruesome journey, but he never diminished his support and beliefs in me. I finally obtained my certificate in December 2016 and finally was able to get hired as a full-time teacher in the following month while I gained my status as a highly qualified teacher (HQT) in mathematics for grades 6–12.
With students, he is a friendly principal, but he can be stern with students when it comes to any trouble occurring at the school. When it comes to their troubles, he never yells at them at all. Instead of that, he will talk with students and then give them options for them to decide to punish themselves. He empowers the students. Many students here at HSDB adore him a lot, especially these younger students who always look up at him. I can speak on behalf of the students, we are thrilled to have him as the principal at HSDB.
Dr. Ramos is a wonderful man. Very professional when it comes to working with him and a great friend when it comes to the setting outside of work. He knows how to switch between boundaries with a lot of respect between his roles. When it comes to a situation at the school, he always strives to resolve it with a solution as best as he could. It is unquestionable to his job as a principal at HSDB. The vision of a Deaf principal, he fits into that very well.
Aside from being my husband and my best friend. Dr. Angel Ramos is the true definition of a life Changer. HSDB is a better place because of him. All the struggles, late nights, and detours he had to take just to get to this place has shown me the heart he has to make a difference. Dr. Angel is an important part of the Deaf community. As a community leader he is someone who represents the Deaf community’s interests and plays the role of protecting them.
Dr. Angel has invested in every child. Dr. Angel invested in their education, their happiness, and their dreams. He is always thinking of new and creative ways to provide HSDB students with a better education. He is a pure ANGEL for all students. I am so proud of him.
Dr. Ramos is our vice-principal at Kalakaua Middle School. He is a very kind principal. If I am playing around, he will tap my shoulder and talk to me instead of yelling. He encourages me to be my best. He gives people chances when they get in trouble or make a mistake.

Aloha! My name is Clyde Corey. I’m a sophomore at Pearl City High School. I’m hard of hearing and grew up in a deaf family and had access to American Sign Language. I’ve known Dr. Ramos for almost 3 years as a friend and a role model. My conversation with Dr. Ramos have always been pleasant and educational. Students respect and admire him. They’ve improved on several levels. Their grades went up, they seem genuinely excited to go to school, and lot more. The work he’s done in 3 years is impressive. It is my pleasure to recommend Dr. Angel Ramos for the LifeChanger of the Year Award. After engaging 3 years as a Deaf Principal of the Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (HSDB), Dr. Angel Ramos brings his work ethic to campus. As a friend and colleague of more than 3 years, I have always found him dependable, efficient and unfailingly punctual. I have never worked with a person who gives as much as to detail as he does. Also, his willingness to take on difficult projects like the Department of Education (DOE) proposals and see them to successful completion has repeatedly impressed me as well as the HSDB teachers and staffs.
With years of Deaf educational experiences, he proved that hard work and belief matter most whether it’s in the class or in the administration office. He comes to work that signifies he is on the job. One signified job was he helped HSDB become a nationally accredited school with the Western Association of the Schools and Colleges. That was his most impressive achievement to one fine Hawaii’s deaf school and the community.
In the light of his role as a principal, there was one important sign of determination. He propelled the lives of the HSDB students. He inspires them to enriched their goals and be leaders. He also projects a warm, cheerful attitude to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. As the saying goes, hindsight has 20-20 vision. His vision of improving HSDB is so strong that the generations of HSDB students will benefit from his actions. They are our future! About six months ago my fiancé and I were living in Southern California, struggling to find our place. We had lived there about a year and encountered many challenges and set backs related to employment, finances and housing. We both care deeply about making a positive impact on others, and contributing to the community around us. I was working as a ASL interpreter and after my work's location decided to shut down, I felt lost, not sure what to do next. We always dreamed to live in beautiful Hawaii. I had lived there before and was anxious to move back. Dr. Angel Ramos made that dream come true when we needed it most. He recognized our passion for service and found us the job opportunities we needed to make the move to Oahu. He did not stop there. He went as far as to contact a friend and find us housing, as it is extremely difficult to secure a living space there while still living on "the mainland." The world needs more people like Dr. Angel Ramos. His kindness and compassion towards us, after only recently meeting us through emails and FaceTime, touched both my fiancé and my heart and I will never forget how he was responsible for one of the best changes in my life. We are now living happily here, and was welcomed into the community. My fiancé is now a full time ASL specialist, sharing his light with the children of HSDB, and I am working towards interpreting here. I have since seem Dr. Ramos spread love wherever he goes, constantly giving guidance and sharing his knowledge, experiences, and his light hearted humor with all around him, no matter if he met them ten years or ten minutes ago. He is an exceptional human being and we could all take a lesson from him. He treats everyone around him like his family, his "Ohana," and that is rare beautiful thing. Thank you Dr. Angel Ramos.
Dr. Angel Ramos is the first Deaf Principal to get accreditation for the Hawai‘i School for the Deaf and the Blind (HSDB) from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for the first time in 105 years (1914). WASC gave HSDB a six-year accreditation status from 2019 to 2025. Dr. Ramos and the hearing and Deaf teachers worked very hard to make it happen. I was elated when this historical event happened. It proved that our school is one of the good few schools in the United States with national accreditation and recognition.
I really appreciate what Dr. Ramos has done for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from diverse backgrounds from Hawai‘i and the Pacific Rim Islands to help them improve their academic skills in language, reading and writing skills. The most important thing is that HSDB is a bilingual-bicultural (ASL/English and Deaf and Hearing cultures) school in which the students from pre-school to 12th grades have the visual learning, including signing ASL (American Sign Language) and learning English as a second language. Their parents will be encouraged to communicate with their child/children in ASL despite the current language barrier. Deaf students are enjoying their social communication with their peers as they learn to get along and understand each other. ASL is the student’s primary language and English will be their second language.
I strongly believe that Dr. Ramos has been working tirelessly to help the students improve their English comprehension skills through reading and writing so they can develop two languages in ASL and English with help from the Deaf and hearing teachers and Educational Assistants (EAs) who communicate with the students in ASL. The quality of Deaf Education at HSDB is very important for us, the staff of HSDB, because we are empowering our students to become successful before they graduate from high school.
Dr. Ramos is a good role model for the students of HSDB because he really cares about them and he gives them good, moral support. I believe that as a Deaf Principal, he is most qualified as a nominee for the 2019 LifeChanger of the Year Award. His strong, positive influence and ability to change the student’s lives will inspire them to have high self-esteem and promote their knowledge in academics, ASL/English communication skills, self-reliance, civil rights, and civic responsibility.
Dr. Angel Ramos arrived in Hawaii 4 years ago for a conference and we were introduced through a mutual colleague. I had the privilege of showing him around the Islands during his visit. Shortly after, he accepted the position at Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind. Over the short time he was there, the morale of the Deaf community and student body was uplifted to untouched heights. His leadership style empowered everyone from teachers, aides, students and alumni to feel valued and capable of making contributions to our Deaf community.
He has always been accessible to all members of the Deaf community and willing to implement new ideas, support iniatives and to add his valued perspective to everyday issues that affect all of us. He is a great man who puts the community before himself!

Dr. Ramos is an incredible human being that truly cares about the people around him. Even more so for the students. My Deaf wife, Vesta, and I, visited HSDB with our Deaf characters - Deaf Santa Claus, Deaf Mrs. Clause, and Deaf Elf. We have visited HSDB three straight years. The Deaf students at HSDB were full of joy and happiness to see us. Much much better than in the past. From the time I was a little kid at HSDB, Santa Claus never knew ASL and couldn't communicate with us. Santa Claus was worthless. Now, HSDB students can see Deaf Santa Claus, Deaf Mrs. Clause, and Deaf Elf each year thanks to Dr. Angel Ramos who invites us to visit HSDB students each year. Before, with hearing principal, we were never invited to HSDB. We thank Dr. Angel Ramos for allowing us to visit the students each year and exposing the students to our Deaf world.
We witnessed 3 students from Maui High School transfer to HSDB thanks to Dr.Angel Ramos. The 3 Deaf students were frustrated at Maui High School due to lack of communication through interpreters. Also, there was no Deaf Education teacher. They felt low self-esteem with no Deaf exposure. When Dr. Angel Ramos showed them his powerpoint about education and life at HSDB, they got excited and brought tears to my eyes. I wished I could be a student at HSDB again but I am too old. I will never forget how the students told their parents they wanted to go to HSDB without hesitation. They all decided to stay at HSDB until graduation next year. When we see them now, they are full of self-esteem and happy with their education at HSDB, which is very important for their future. I thank Dr. Angel Ramos for helping them be successful.
I have known Dr. Ramos for about three years. In that time, I have worked with him on many occasions and have always seen a positive attitude. His respect for all, whether it be children co-workers, interpreters, staff, administrators, etc is consistent. Dr. Angel says “hello” to everyone he comes in contact with. Whether hearing or Deaf, he communicates freely with a great sense of humor. He loves to learn about other people’s lives and celebrates their victories. The compassion and love of people are genuine. His cheerful nature is extremely contagious. His leadership qualities are powerful, as he always listens to both sides before proceeding.
Dr. Angel was inspired to all deaf and deafblind students at Gallaudet University where I had him as my Algebra professor. I struggled with Algebra but he taught me how to be careful with numbers in the order. I felt comfortable with his teaching method to me and other students in the classroom. I passed. For years, I had seen his approx with diversity of vision loss such as low vision and totally deafblind students and friends, he took lots of patience with them and always advocacy for the disabilities students. He strongly believes in giving empowerment to the students, not for himself. I heard that he transferred to Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind as principal and many deaf students learned lots from him. He deserves to get an award for his Lifechange of the year!
Dr. Angel is the first Deaf principal I have ever met. He has empathy. I can communicate with him easily. He helped HSDB a lot and improved education. I went to hearing school and then transferred to Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind where Angel is principal. At the hearing school, I had no opportunities. At HSDB, Angel gave me many opportunities. I was able to join the Robotic Team which Angel created. I have learned a lot from the robotic team - my experiences with the robotic team will help me with my future employment. Growing up in a hearing school I faced many barriers. When I arrived at HSDB, there were no barriers. I was able to communicate easily with Angel and others. He had empathy. Thanks to Angel and HSDB, I changed my life. Thank you, Angel!

Dr. Angel Ramos cares for and believes in his students. It doesn't matter if they are smart or struggling academically. He believes in and knows his students will thrive when they have someone who shows love and a desire to help them succeed. Some students struggle, due to different factors. Angel will work with the student(s) to insure the best outcome and learning experience will happen. You know when you are in his office or just talking with him around campus, he makes you feel like you are the most important person to him. He doesn't miss opportunities to say Hi and ask how you are doing. He is always happy and smiling, which helps turn a students "not wanting to be in school attitude" to a more positive attitude because of the positive environment he spreads to others. The Deaf Hawaii kids need a principal who can talk with them in sign language directly, NOT through an interpreter as a third person. I have been a Teacher of the Deaf on Maui for over a decade. I’ve seen a few Principals of the Hawaii School for the Deaf come and go. Having worked with Dr. Ramos and engaged with d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing (d/DHH) keiki (children), I was so amazed at the turn around. The campus has not only seen structural upgrades, but the rigor and dedication to provide best practices in Deaf education is being met at the highest level. Access to direct communication and resources from the larger Deaf community at the local, state and national level is now available to Hawaii’s teachers and Deaf students through Dr. Ramos’s leadership style, ASL skill, and personal experiences as a Deaf leader and change agent.
The future for Hawaii’s d/Deaf students is on the right path. Just as the native Hawaiian people look up to their Kapunas who share the needs of the Hawaiian people based on Intricate first hand experience with Hawaiian culture and values; the Deaf community has gained their own Deaf Leader advocating the needs of d/DHH students and teachers with attention to Deaf Culture and Deaf values.
