Dereck Cobb was nominated by his principal, Linda Houseal.
"This is our first year experiencing a SRO at our school," said Houseal. "At first, I didn't think we needed one because of the age of our students. However, Officer Cobb has only been here for two months and has already made such a huge difference for the staff and school climate. He is a self-motivator. I don't have to ask him to do anything, because he is right there already completing any task that has to be done to ease our workload."
Officer Cobb is visible and helpful to students, parents and the entire staff. He starts his morning at the car rider line, helping students get out of their cars and greeting each student and parent as they walk into the school. Everyone loves him! During lunch and breakfast, he is right there helping every student place their milk and dinnerware on their trays. The students are learning to trust police officers and view them as trusting adults.
Each afternoon, before he leaves to attend another school, he collects the car rider numbers and assists with placing the students in their cars to go home. Typically, the car rider line is a half mile long, and Officer Cobb is consistently in place and never changes. His school is much safer with him on board!
"There was an incident with a parent trying to take a child when he was told to release the child," said Houseal. "Both parents were in a heated argument. Officer Cobb stepped right in and solved the problem without hesitation! Our stress levels are down because of the skill set he brings to our school. He helps provide a safe environment for our students to learn. I was so wrong about how I felt from the beginning! After witnessing him for a couple of months, my staff, students, parents and I will fight the world to keep him with us! He has truly been a life-changing breath of fresh air for our school!"
He is amazing! My daughter had a rough time starting school, and any time he’d see her upset I’d hear him say “what’d we talk about yesterday? It’s gonna be a good day & we’re gonna have fun!”. She absolutely loves school now! The first smile i ever got out of her about school was about Officer Cobb & how he was the “lunch police” who made her laugh. He was a big part of that transition for her! I’m so thankful for it too! Way to go!!
I always enjoy seeing your smiling jace when i pick up or drop off my son ,You are truley a blessing to the children they adore you. Everytime when you bring my son to the car at the end of the day he always tells me he loves you and that you are so sweet. ??
Officer Cobb is a great asset to Daffodil School and the community as a whole. With all of the school related violence that has been experienced throughout America, it is very refreshing to know that there is a caring and professional officer in the midst of the learning environment. One night she saw you at the football game and made it her mission to walk down to the grass to say “hey” to “officer cobbs.” You are always greeting the children with a smile and saying encouraging things to them when they walk in the school. I love Officer Cobb! He is the asset that made me feel safe letting my child attend Daffodil. He is such a kind man and amazing with all the kids. Always, greeting the children.

My daughter, Emmeline LOVES officer Cobb! She now says she wants to be a police officer like him when she grows up! She tells me how he helps her open her milk and with her tray. Daffodil is very lucky to have him.

Officer Cobb has been an asset to the children in my classroom. At the beginning of the school year many children viewed him as "the police" and some were scared of him. Now he is their friend, he high fives them, chats with them and seeks out specific students to check on throughout the day. Officer Cobb is certainly changing lives and Mrs. T's class appreciates him for that.

We have the best officer! Officer Cobb is a perfect match for our students. It takes a special person to work with preschoolers. He exhibits all of the special qualities needed. He's patient, understanding, and kind, and he keeps the students smiling. I'm amazed at how he remembers all the small details about the children and that makes their day. Officer Cobb has made a huge impact on our school. The children love him! He interacts with them and assist the teachers with the children for breakfast and lunch. The children look forward to seeing him everyday! When a child is having a rough day, Officer Cobb is able to talk to them and get through to them. Officer Cobb is the perfect person for DAFFODIL! He works well with our Pre-K students and it takes a special person to have patience with this age group. He steps in to help and we do not even have to ask him. He welcomes us and departs us with a smile. The students and staff love him and NO other school can take him!!!

Officer Cobb is a positive plus at Daffodil PreK. Students feel as though they have a hero when they see him. He always acknowledge them. They are so excited to let me know that they talk to the police officer. He is such a big help and shows that there is a true heart for people in his every day actions. He goes so far as to remember students who may have food allergies and makes sure they don't get that item on their breakfast or lunch plate. He makes the staff feel that we are in a safe environment and he always has a word to put a smile on your face if there isn't one when you walk pass him. Only knowing him a few months, I can truly say that Officer Cobb is a real, positive, professional Life Changer.
