Carmen Barnes was nominated by a member of her family, Carl Stiers.
Ms. Barnes has worked in the field of early childhood education for the past 23 years. She has held the position of assistant director of La Petite Academy in Colorado Springs and at St. Mark's Early Childhood Center. She is also currently working as an afternoon childcare teacher, as well. Ms. Barnes has a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the Catholic University of Puerto Rico, and an Associate's degree from Pima College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
This year, Ms. Barnes started her fourth year at St. Mark's, returning as a STEM teacher for the entire school. In August of this year, Ms. Barnes was invited to travel abroad to the country of Honduras to facilitate STEM workshops with DaNel Hogan, the director of the STEMAZING project. She translated every document used at the workshop and facilitated the workshops for K-12 teachers. Ms. Barnes will be working with the STEMAZING Project in developing related classes and workshops for teachers in the Tucson, AZ area.
"Ms. Barnes likes to think of herself as a self taught science geek and enjoys imparting her love of science with the young children she teaches," Stiers said. "Her love of science is very obvious and contagious to those around her."
