Jennifer Claybrook was nominated by a colleague who wishes to remain anonymous.

Ms. Claybrook is larger than life to her students. At times, their success has come at the price of her own sacrifices. She is a teacher who every parent would like their child to have at least once during their education career. Ms. Claybrook has spent many years working with children on the spectrum for autism and other unique learning disabilities.

Ms. Claybrook isn't just a teacher to these students; she practices a total submersion into their disability to attempt to understand what the child feels and how to best meet their needs. She personally owns every learning plan she writes for her students. Her dream is to one day have the opportunity to study children in a clinic-style research setting to hopefully provide an insight into the unknown world these students live in every day.

"To say that Ms. Claybrook has a passion for teaching is an understatement, but I don't know of a stronger word that I can use to describe what she has for these children," the nominator said. "The only description I can give is that her facial expression and eyes light up like a kid on Christmas morning anytime she has the opportunity to share what she has learned or talk about a break through that she has experienced with one of her students. I honestly don't know how she has enough hours in the day to do everything that she does for kids on the spectrum."

Even during Ms.Claybrook's summer vacation, she volunteers at various autism camps at Children's Harbor and at Camp Ascca, a camp for disabled and special needs children and adults. Every summer, she has been a volunteer staff member at these camps since she was a high school student over 20 years ago. This dedication proves that this is Ms.Claybrook's calling in life and not just a job for her.

"She believes that it's her calling to be a mother and advocate for these children that don't have a voice," the nominator said. "There are so many letters of support from parents, advocate groups, children and other teachers who can't speak highly enough about her. She is an unsung hero to these children, and she goes above and beyond to help other educators understand children on the spectrum and how best to meet their needs."

During school vacations, you won't find Ms.Claybrook at home. Instead, she'll be babysitting for parents with young children on the spectrum to give them relief. She also attends band practice or band camp with a student who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend. Additionally, she speaks and works at a community advocate and attends a support group for children on the spectrum. Ms. Claybrook seeks opportunities during school breaks to observe classes in other school districts or at the local university. She enjoys spending her free time bargain shopping to find gifts for those special kids in life, and enjoys hanging out with her parents.

A student recently wrote the following thank you note to Ms. Claybrook:

"You are the sun in my shine, the Coke in my Cola......I like a lot of people but you I love. There is nothing in this world that will split us apart. You are like a mom to me. I can talk to you and be myself around you. If someone was to put a price on you, I would have 100 jobs trying to pay for you. You have been there for me left and right and it is darn time for me to say, Thank you, it's not a lot but you are my hero!!! Writing this note make me cry, like you do every time I give you a note but all I can say is I love you Ms. Claybrooks!"

"Heroes like her never tell their story or claim any fame; they find fulfillment in seeing the success of those that they fight and work for everyday," the nominator said. "She is a superhero who makes a difference in the lives of those she touches, every day!"

Jennifer Claybrook is an amazing woman. She not only fulfills every aspect of her job description to the greatest extent possible, she also goes above and beyond the confines of her job description, because she is solely focused on the needs of the students and parents that she tirelessly serves. In addition to working every day to help her students with special needs to make academic progress, she works every day to help her students with special needs to increase their level of independence, and to increase their quality of life. Jennifer continues to help her students and their parents each day after her day has officially ended. She answers questions and provides guidance after school hours are over. She attends our autism nonprofit's parent education workshops so that she can share her expert knowledge about autism and individualized education programs with our parents. She volunteers at our summer family camp with a former student. She knows that he feels safe with her, and because of that feeling of safety, he feels comfortable enough to have fun and to participate in camp activities. This also provides his mother with a sense of safety and security, which enables her to feel comfortable enough to participate in the parent portion of camp and get the full benefit of the experience without having to worry about her son, because she knows he is being well taken care of by someone who knows and loves him, Jennifer not only gives her all during her work day to help her students and their parents. She offers more of herself and more of her time to help her students and their parents, her school, and her community, and that offer comes straight from the heart. I am amazed by her knowledge, her intelligence, her spirit, and her dedication. I am honored and thankful to know her, and I'm grateful that she has helped so many families who so desperately need help.

Incredible Teacher and Incredible Lady! Our family recently moved away from Dadeville Elementary to a place far far away. I drop my kids off everyday now in a school that is entirely unfamiliar to me. Different people, different places, different faces. I remember Ms. Claybrook's face at DES so well. I have family and friends that are educators. It’s a hard job that is definitely a calling. Not only are they educators, but they are counselors, parents to kids that don’t have good homes, financial suppliers for school items, and the list goes on and on. It’s a thankless job and most teachers will never complain about what they do. Thank you Ms. Claybrook for your service to the community. You are definitely making a difference.

Jennifer and I were fellow education majors at the University of Montevallo. Even though I left the profession to pursue my dreams of performing, I am so happy to see that she has stuck with the profession and proven to be the extremely capable, passionate, and influential educator that I knew she would become. I'm proud of her!

I was fortunate to have Ms.Claybrook as one of my son's teachers 3 yrs ago. She is one of the most involved and caring teachers at DES, and to this day my son still thinks the world of her. On several occasions while visiting the school I have observed Ms. Claybrook actively engaged with her students. Her students appear to always have her full attention and I can see the passion in her eyes when she is working with them. As a professional in the community, I have also had several families that I have worked with to tell me how great of a teacher Ms. Claybrook has been to their child. I have heard nothing but spectacular things about Ms. Claybrook and there is no one more deserving of this award than she is! We definitely need more loving, caring, and passionate teachers like her!

Mrs. Jennifer is an amazing teacher and person that really cares for students with disabilities. She has been a fabulous and selfless volunteer in LCARA's Summer Respite Care Camp assisting students with autism so parents can have a time for themselves to enjoy some respite time. I know she goes beyond school duties to help local families in meeting their needs. As an educator she tries to reach each individual student to be the best they can and maxim their potential. I have been honor to met some one like her, a true teacher that works outside the four walls of a classroom for the wellbeing of her students. I can't think of any other person more deserving of this reward.

Erin Hardin Posted over a year ago

My first experience working with children on the autism spectrum was as an assistant in Jennifer Claybrook’s classroom. My first morning on the job I arrived well before class time to find her already in a deep conversation with a parent. You could tell right away her involvement went beyond the classroom and I soon discovered it was the same for all her students. She didn’t just help them learn, she genuinely enjoyed them and loved them. Her heart for children is immense.

She definitely deserves recognition for all she does for children and others with disabilities.

Gwendolyn Brown Posted over a year ago

Jennifer leads by example and I know that first hand. I had the pleasure of working with her as a teacher-aide and I remember so well how she was willing to push through ALL boundaries to make sure that kids with disABILITIES were going to be expected to excel with her help and she led us to make sure to help such be accomplished. Jennifer did not just do what takes place too often when working with students with disABILITIES. The students would master their IEP goals early with her and she was on it to make sure that new goals were in place. Often times, she would do many self checks and work with each student to see how they were excelling. Jennifer was not just willing to sit in a classroom when they would leave out for something like art or physical education, but she would join them and interact with them. The students knew that she deeply cared. We had one student that had a very difficult time going to the public library. Jennifer was determined with us to get him back into the community setting and not segregated due to him having a disABILITY and the mission was accomplished. It was a difficult challenge, but she went through it with us and helped along the way and it was such a joyous day. She is certainly tremendously deserving of having the honor to carry the title of a Life Changer of the Year!

Zolinda Cochran Posted over a year ago

I worked with Jennifer at a private facility for young children with autism. At that time I was retired as a public school special education teacher. Lots of experience with some special needs, but little knowledge of autism. Jennifer was so helpful to this novice veteran, and taught me lots! It was always a joy to see her interact (love) both her children and parents! I had the opportunity to observe her years later with her students at Dadeville. Her love for, and dedication to those children was as strong as I had observed previously when we worked together. She was very passionate and excited about what she was doing, and wanted to do for her students. Jennifer is definitely worthy of the honor of LifeChanger of the year - every year!

She takes every opportunity to reach out to students and truly impacts lives in process. I can think of no one more deserving of this award.

Kelley Shirley Posted over a year ago

I came to know Jennifer through our shared work at an Autism Treatment Center ten years ago. She poured every resource she had into our children - her time, her own money, her heart and her talents. For the children, she spent countless hours teaching new skills, planning new adventures and advocating for their success. For the parents struggling with the weight of a new diagnosis, she was a babysitter, a teacher of practical/functional home skills and someone who loved each child unconditionally. For her colleagues, she was a leader in her teaching practices, her ability to connect with her students and in her dedication to their success. —- I recently completed my 17th year as a practicing SLP and I will always count it a privilege to have worked with Jennifer. — I haven’t seen her in some time, but based on the comments left by others, I see that she has continued to be the World Changer that I knew her to be. ??

I've known Jennifer since she was a child. Her heart has always been giving to others. She is an amazing person and has given her life to teach children with disabilities. I know she makes a difference in every life she touches. Again and again I have heard accounts of her giving of herself and her time and talents to help those around her. She is constantly seeking to be of service and to meet the needs of others. She volunteers during the time that most would be taking a vacation. But that's Jennifer! Giving of herself is what brings her happiness. I am blessed to know her and call her a friend.

I have known Jennifer Claybrook her entire life and I can truthfully say that she in one of the most selfless people I have ever known. She ALWAYS puts others first regardless of how it affects her. She is one of those teachers that are truly a once in a lifetime find for any school system and DES is indeed lucky to have someone like her...the children that interact with Jennifer are the ones that are the winners. As I am at the school periodically picking up my grand kids, I see first hand the love the children have for Miss Claybrook! Everyone of them love her and have to tell her bye before going home. I know there are other candidates being considered for this prestigious award, but i can not imagine anyone that is more deserving than Jennifer Claybrook. Good luck Jennifer and God Bless!!!

Jennifer has a keen sense of those around her and pays special attention to those who are on the outside of group activities. She takes extra steps to include everyone and make sure no one is left out. While kids are the reason she is nominated for the award, Jennifer spends a large amount of her time outside of work caring for the elderly. From preparing meals, cleaning and personal care, she goes above and beyond in all areas of her life to make a difference others lives. I support her wholeheartedly to win this most deserving award!

This article about Jennifer is pretty spot on but it still doesn’t say enough about her. I have known her for years and she truly loves her job and the children she works with. I know there has been times where she has stayed up all hours of the night to do things for her “kids”. Even her free time she’s thinking of them or trying to figure out a way to improve something for them. She is an amazing woman and teacher. Ms. Claybrook is a wonderful teacher and is definitively what I would consider a lifechanger.  She helps out her students when they need it, going the extra mile.  She is very understanding and cares about all of the kids she has through out the day. She touches the hearts of many students. She loves being a teacher knowing that she gives students the education and attention that they need. She has a great personality and she is very well liked at Dadeville Elementary School. She goes beyond the call of duty and does so with a smile on her face.  She is at school early and there late making sure she has what she need to help her students get what they need. Ms. Claybrook is an exceptional teacher and  I would love to see her get this award.

She is very soft-spoken but has a huge heart and love what she does as a teacher. She works with them when she is off work and volunteers to assist parents with them when the students are away from school. She studies her craft and remains abreast of the latest research-based tools to better educate her students. She is self-less and is always looking for a better way to help her students. Ms. Claybrook is diligent and tenacious in performing her job duties, but she does her job with all of her heart. She is working on diving in a pond this winter to raise money for those who are in need. Ms. Claybrook is definitely a life changer because she changes the lives of her students, their parents and other teachers on a daily basis.

Today, as a 1st grader, his reading level is above that of most of his general ed peers in his grade-level. This child lights up when he sees her because he know she loves him and will fight for him. #LCOY With all that so truly said what more can be added to celebrate this amazing woman. She was my son's teacher in 2004-2005 and continues embracing who he is, also takes time out of her busy life to be my support and his friend/buddy at Camp Respite-Children's Harbor. She brings light in those minds of a seemingly dark sensory overloaded world. She teaches in the way the individual child can learn, not in the way we think they should learn. She embraces each individual child's uniqueness. "What most people don't know is that Most Special Education Teachers angels disguised as extraordinary humans
