Lindsey Ison was nominated by her principal, Sandra Kernen.

Changing lives is exactly what Ms. Ison has done since being hired as a team member at Fairhaven Schools. Since her first year, she has been chasing down grant funding and discovering ways to educate students, staff, and families about healthy eating. However, she manages to do it in fun ways, such as having Olaf visit classrooms during lunch time to share the benefits of carrots, or having Moana share fruit and dance moves to keep students moving and healthy. All of the students in the Fairhaven Program have disabilities. The Fairhaven Program includes grades K-12 (112 students) as well as integrated preschool classes (120 students). Ms. Ison manages to create programming appropriate for all age ranges. It's a challenge, to say the least, but she answers it every year, even during a pandemic.

This year, with the added challenges of COVID-19, Ms. Ison secured grants to ensure each student in the program receives free lunches for the next four years. She took the time to discover the high-risk needs of her students' families and worked to create a Backpack Program, which required $30,000 in funding. Because of the Backpack Program, students have food going home with them on the weekends, when they are most at risk for food insecurity. She is also working to create a way to provide a holiday meal to send home to families that have no way of providing one.

During this school year with blended learning, she worked with the Transportation Department to figure out a way to have food packets delivered to the homes of the families, since many of them have no way of getting to the school. She had to work with her team to find ways to deliver the food in safe, timely ways to ensure food illness did not occur. She took this challenge on and has made this a program that is making a wonderful difference in the students' lives. Many of the students have significant medical needs, so Ms. Ison has had to work to send home lunches that cater to each students' needs or medical issues, such as food allergies or the need for pureed or mechanical soft foods. It has been an incredibly difficult challenge, but nothing has stopped her from meeting the students' needs.

For many schools, the cafeteria supervisor is the unsung hero. Often times, parents aren't even sure who the cafeteria supervisor is, but Ms. Ison has worked hard to make her presence known. She will personally meet with families to answer their questions, address their needs, help them complete Free and Reduced Lunch applications, and create healthy eating presentations in the hopes of helping children thrive. This year, she was able to reach out to teachers and safely incorporate students into the meal prep process so they could work on job-related skills while at school participating in the school-to-work programming. It has been a wonderful program to watch blossom into a set process, and she hopes to keep it post-COVID.

When Ms. Ison is not at school, she can be found volunteering with her children at a nonprofit called Making Kids Count. This is a volunteer program that works to provide nonfood essentials to families such as diapers, wipes, strollers, car seats, etc. She has combined her work and passion to send diapers with the food packets that go home to families in need. Her presence in our program has been incredible, and she never touts her own horn. To be honest, many may not realize all that she does. She works to do what is needed and is often under the radar screen, which is what makes her a true heroine.

Lindsey has worked so hard for the families in our school. I'll never forget that when the pandemic started and most people were staying home on lockdown, she was at the school preparing meals and finding a way to safely get them to families that needed them. She has not stopped doing so since. What a burden it lifts for families not to have to worry about meals, when there are so many other stressors to contend with in this uncertain time. Lindsey is also always so kind and accommodating when school is in session and anything is asked of her. She is truly deserving of this award.

Hi I am Lindsey's daughter, Liliana. I would just like to say how proud I am of my mom. She is constantly doing all she can to the best of her ability for others and puts others before herself. I am so blessed to have her as my mother. She has created such a great household to grow up in. For example she leads a Christian home, we go to church every Sunday, and she also encourages us to constantly read and study our bible. Also, we as a family enjoy helping others with friends by participating in volunteer activities in our community including MKC, and Food Distribution Centers. She is a great person and example. Good job mom!!

I have known this wonderful, lovely, generous, giving, caring young lady since I gave birth to her. She always looked out for the children that were picked on, always asked if she could help someone in school whether it be food, clothing or shoes, school supplies. She has always brought home stray animals wanting to keep them/ care for them. She has called me several times asking if she could bring home a homeless person to feed them. She has given complete strangers rides home, bought food , Lindsey & her children went & passed out blankets, coats, mittens to the homeless! They also help at the rescue mission! She always makes you feel that everyone’s need is so very important! She makes sure that her 4 children know that any situation can happen to anyone at any time and they need to help anyone they can! Her father & I are so proud of her! With much love, Sam & Lou Ann

Jeff Owens Posted over a year ago

Hello - I've recently passed 40 years of work in the foodservice industry, the last 29 with a national distributor. I've had the opportunity to interview, hire/fire and or work with thousands of people; most of them were average, in both their effort and interest level. And then there this 3-5% of them, a very few that are committed to doing the right thing. This excellent few have pushed that commitment for "doing right" from their personal convictions over to their own work, and to the training of subordinates, and to pushing their peers and higher-ups. This is more than quality over quantity as a work mantra. It seems to me they work in this manner because they must know that "the good draws to it the good." And so by example, and consistency they lead and surpass expectations, in a way that appears effortless. This is how Lindsey Ison approaches challenges and goals at The Fairhaven School. Low key, and humble, she not only falls into that elite 3-5% of employees, she sets the standard for that group. She'll always have my utmost effort, and support. Please extend yours to her as well. Thanks.

Lindsey is truly amazing. A great example of a mother, friend, and hard worker. She is someone I really look up to. Her strength and determination are apparent to those around her. She has allowed me to drop off my daughter on a day I didn’t have childcare. We arrive and there had to be 7 or 8 kids. ?? I’ve even said to her before “your so calm and patient, how do you do it?” Now reading all of the wonderful things she does makes her even more amazing than I thought she was. ??
