Music that Describes Rebecca

Rebecca Hartley was nominated by her colleague, Lisa Knoll.

Mrs. Hartley has been a teacher in the New Buffalo Area School District for the past 42 years, the last 38 of which have been spent at the middle school level.  She is a strong advocate for middle-level education and has been instrumental over the years in keeping her district's middle school a separate entity from the high school.  She knows the importance of the middle school experience and realizes that these years can be a difficult developmental time for students as they proceed through adolescence. Mrs. Hartley recognizes all of the academic and personal changes that happen to young adults during these formative years.  She knows how important it is for these students to have adults in their corner who understand what they are going through and provide a positive influence in their decision making. Mrs. Hartley has been a great role model for thousands of students over the years, just recently teaching her third generation of one local family.  She leads by example and has dedicated her life to the teaching profession.

Mrs. Hartley has been a part of multiple initiatives that have been introduced to her district over the past 40 years.  She always takes a leading role when she knows it will benefit students. She was a leader for Positive Behavior Support in the district, which rewards students for the positive behavior they exhibit during the course of a school day. Mrs. Hartley helped write rubrics that would show students the behavior expectations in various locations of the school (cafeteria, library, hallways, restrooms, etc.). These rubrics also outlined what behaviors should or should not be witnessed by adults in each of those areas. Incentives were given by staff to reward students who followed the expectations of the rubrics. She developed a rewards system called “Project Pride” that recognizes students each trimester for having good grades, few tardies and absences, and no office referrals.  Students are rewarded by having the opportunity to go to a movie, bowl with their classmates, or eat at local restaurants.

Every year, Mrs. Hartley helps other staff members pick a theme for the school year.  The theme is always a positive one and encourages the students to live and treat others the way that they would want to be treated.  This year's theme focuses on kindness and mask-wearing (M.A.S.K. Many Acts of Simple Kindness). Mrs. Hartley often designs t-shirts that provide a visual of the theme, as well as showcases/bulletin boards with positive messages that encourage students to be accepting of everyone and what makes them unique.

Mrs. Hartley helps to plan advisory activities that encourage team-building and focus on the aspects of good character.  She is her school's S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) advisor.  She meets during her lunch hours with students to plan activities that support positive decision-making in her school. Mrs. Hartley also encourages volunteering for other groups and organizations such as St. Jude’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society.

As a colleague, Mrs. Hartley never forgets a birthday or misses a holiday.  She bakes amazing cakes for her colleagues and makes sure they have a card signed by the entire staff.  She makes her colleagues feel valued and appreciated for what they do for students by leaving treats in their mailboxes or delivering goodies at staff meetings, all of which are accompanied by a positive message. During this time of social distancing, Mrs. Hartley arranged for a tailgate luncheon in the parking lot so staff members could finally be together and feel safe while doing it.

"She is like a breath of fresh air when times get tough," said Knoll. "Becky makes you feel loved and valued for who you are as a person, and you know that you can count on her to be there for you in any situation."

Mrs. Hartley has taught many subjects in her district, with her true love being math instruction.  She has recently become a World Geography teacher, as well.  No matter what challenges she is asked to face, she faces them with passion and with the sole purpose of making her students feel confident about learning and loved for who they are.  She devotes countless hours to volunteering in her district and doing community service activities to raise money for the students. The money she raises through her volunteer time is given back to the students to make sure they all receive a color yearbook at no cost to them at the end of each school year, are rewarded for their grades each trimester, and are able to have money for field trips if their own families can’t afford it. Mrs. Hartley often stays after school with students, giving up her own free time to make sure they are successful in the classroom.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mrs. Hartley has spent countless hours learning new technology and adapting her lessons for virtual instruction. She not only worked during the regular work hour, but she also did small group and individual Zoom calls in the evenings and over the weekend to help students who were struggling. She always puts the needs of others before her own and never looks for recognition for what she does.

"Becky's a beautiful human being, both inside and out.  Her best quality is her humbleness," said Knoll. "She would never expect recognition for anything she has done and would attribute her success to her peers and colleagues, but Becky makes all of us want to be better people and do what is right for our students. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from her. I hope that I can offer my students the same amount of love and support that she has given our students over the past 40+ years. She is definitely worthy of praise and should be recognized for her level of excellence with our middle school population.  New Buffalo Area Middle School is lucky to have her as part of our staff.  We hope that she realizes what a valuable role she plays every day in helping students grow into respectable adults with a passion for learning and giving to others.  Becky has definitely been a LifeChanger for all of us!"

Congratulations, Mrs. Hartley! I was never lucky enough to have her as a teacher myself, but she always had a friendly hello to give to everyone. I'm so glad to see someone so wonderful be rewarded for their hard work!!

In the early 1980's, Mrs. Hartley was one of my Middle School teacher's and is currently my coworker. Becky's determination to make a difference in the lives of the youth has always been her number one priority. The world has been through many changes since the 80's and she finds way to stay current on various teaching trends that work for her students. Becky shows respect and appreciation for everyone of her co-workers, not only fellow teachers, but food service, custodial, bus drivers, aides, etc.... Becky truly deserves the Life Changer award, because that's what she does...changes lives!

It has been such a great pleasure having the privilege of teaching with Becky. It is incredible to watch Becky empower both students and her colleagues. She has such a way of building people up and giving them the confidence that they need in order to be successful. Becky teaches in a manner that is fun and interesting to students, and she makes all students within her classroom feel included. This allows her students to feel safe in the classroom and allows them to feel comfortable with participating in class discussions and with asking questions when needed. I am honored to be able to call Becky my friend and colleague. She is more than deserving of this Lifechanger of the Year Award.

I had the honor to start my teaching career with Becky Hartley! Together we learned from our mentor teachers to care and educate the children in our classrooms. Becky demonstrated a natural ability to not only care and educate those children, but she also encompassed the empathy and compassion so important in connecting to your students. She has always focused on the needs of the students in learning academically and personally. Her attention to a student's personal needs made her the mentor that student's desired. She has always maintained the desire to do the best for her students which included along with academics the additional extracurricular time and activities which provided benefits for all students. Not only has Becky been a Lifechanger for her students, but Becky's involvement with her students was a Lifechanger for her which is a true testament to the impact of education to the giver and receiver.

I’ve been teaching for over 20 years and had the pleasure to join New Buffalo Area Schools a couple of years ago. Mrs. Hartley immediately stood out as a one-of-a-kind teacher. She’s a positive leader amongst the staff and a brilliant teacher in the classroom. But I think her greatest strength is her absolute dedication to her students. The students feel this and are encouraged and inspired to be their best. I was fortunate upon joining New Buffalo Schools to have Becky as my mentor. More than just helpful and instructive, she’s been caring and supportive and helped make my transition easy and smooth. I couldn’t think of someone more deserving of this award than Becky Hartley.

Becky Harley is a colleague of mine, and I’m honored to work with someone that cares so much for her students as she does. Her personal interest in the success of each student (yes, even the knuckleheads) is truly inspiring and something I hope I display as a teacher as well. Dear Becky, we are all beyond blessed to have you in our lives.

I’m proud that I had the opportunity to serve the students and families of New Buffalo Area Schools with Becky Hartley and a wonderful team of teachers and staff. No school district has greater impact on its students than NBAS and no teacher greater than Becky Hartley. It is hard to resist someone who thinks you are important. Becky’s passion, presence, and professional energy have been committed to the success of the community, the schools, the families, and each individual student every single day of her working life ... because she believes deeply in their individual and collective importance. Mrs. Hartley is present whenever and wherever the community convenes, ready to scold, hug, or smile at any NBAS student who needs attention. The volume of Becky Hartley’s accomplishments is impressive, but it is the depth of her commitment that separates her and makes her a “life changer.” William Welling, NBMS Principal, 2003-2013

Teaching with Becky for the last five years has been a great experience. She is a great mentor and friend to all of her colleagues. She is always game for anything we throw her way. Becky is not only a team player but a leader at our school. She organizes so many great things for our middle school students. Past students stream in and out of her room each day just to get a quick heartfelt "hello" from Mrs. Hartley. She makes each and every student feel important. Becky Hartley is a very deserving recipient of the Life Changer award. She has been a Life Changer here at New Buffalo Middle School.

In my 21 years as an educator in a variety of school districts, I have never met another teacher like Mrs. Hartley. Most teachers look forward to retiring as soon as they can, which is usually after 30 years of teaching. Then there is Hartley, at 42 years of experience, who is still at the top of the profession, involved in so many ways in our middle school, and doing all of the extra things that great teachers do to connect with their students! I teach 7th grade math to the students who come out of her 6th grade math classroom, and her students come to my class equipped and ready to actively participate in class discussions and complete homework. More important than that, I think all of our students know that Hartley cares about them. She is humble, kind, generous, fair, approachable, and always working.

Beth Posted over a year ago

Not only did Becky teach all three of my children, I have the pleasure of working with her as well. I have known her for over 13 years and interacted with her in so many different ways...as a parent concerned for the education and future of my children, as a fellow community member, as a co-worker, and as a friend. I have learned through my many interactions with Becky that she is a master of mindfulness. She is truly present physically, mentally and emotionally in the exchanges she has with others whether she is conversing one on one or presenting to a classroom full of 6th graders. It is through these mindful connections with others that Becky seems to produce a synergy. Those who experience her walk away feeling accepted and valued. Becky is a Life Changer in every sense of the word.

After working with Becky for 7 years at New Buffalo Area Schools, I reflect on the professionalism, love of learning, long hours and most of all her love of her students. ALL students loves and most of all respected Becky. The student’s spoke so highly of her, but I went in to observe in her Math class, she was extremely strict. Her combination of humor, partnership with parents and never giving up on any child was and is top notch. Staying late offering free study halls, attending graduations, remembering her former students, preparing them for high school math were common practice. For the sake of her students she rode the waves of changing administrators and NEVER gave up. After working in 5 schools in 5 states over the past 20 years, Becky is in the top 3 educators I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I learned how to care more for students while working with Becky. NB Middle School Counselor(2007-2014.)

I am the superintendent of New Buffalo Area Schools so I get the privilege of watching Becky Hartley change lives every day. As I read through the previous comments, two of Becky’s traits came to mind. First, she is a GREAT listener. I think that is a pretty rare quality as many people are focused on getting their own point across. Secondly, Becky cares about EVERYONE—students, staff, coworkers, community members, and administrators (even superintendents!)—regardless of their race, socioeconomic status, gender, or background. She doesn’t treat people equally; she treats them equitably. I think this is where her listening skills are such a huge asset. Becky listens to determine what peoples’ needs truly are and then she gets to work on helping them. Her leadership has been invaluable on impacting the culture and climate of New Buffalo Middle School. When I am having a rough day in the superintendent’s office, I will often just go down to Becky’s classroom and watch her teach and interact with her students. It is such a positive experience that it helps refocus me on the work that we are trying to do. I will never know exactly how many lives that Becky has changed over the last 40+ years at New Buffalo Area Schools but I do know that she has changed mine. She would be an outstanding representative of the Life Changer of the Year Award.

I had Mrs.Hartley as a math teacher 27 years ago. The passion she had then for math is still the same today. Her class was amazing. She challenged us and encouraged us to be better students. I wish I could have had her for more math classes, but she sent me on to high school. Even after graduation and becoming a teacher myself she generously gave to my class to help us celebrate Dr.Seuss. She had her students make Dr.Seuss characters to decorate my classroom and the halls in our school where I teach. I still use the Seuss characters to this day, 12 years later. Mrs. Hartley is an inspiration and someone I admire to be like in the classroom.

I had the privilege of working with Mrs. Hartley in her classroom. She is so good at what she does. She is able to engage her students and help them be successful in Math. Math is hard and Mrs. Hartley has a way of getting kids to slow down and grasp the concepts. She encourages them to do their personal best. Her commitment to the kids is amazing. I choreographed plays in New Buffalo for 10 years and one thing you could always depend on was Mrs. Hartley there with a camera getting pictures of the kids for the yearbook. She took so much pride and listening to her complement each and every student in the play I know meant alot to them. This is just one of many events I would see her at! After school in the concession window, dances, field trips are just a few more events she was involved in. Mrs. Hartley also was a teacher for my daughter, she is kind and always had looked for the positive while working on those concepts that were difficult. She is truly a life changer and is the heart of New Buffalo Middle School!! She is one of those teachers you remember for a lifetime!

Last week, I was fortunate to witness one example of why the middle school staff of New Buffalo Area Schools believes that Becky Hartley deserves to receive the LifeChanger award. It was Problem Solving Day at the middle school, which Mrs. Hartley organizes and oversees every year. I observed the students laughing and working with their peers to solve and complete each activity which included an academic focus, e.g. measuring the diameter of their snowball!! Mrs. Hartley, a longtime educator in our district, demonstrated her ability to blend academics and fun in everything she does for our students. This is only one example of the way Mrs. Hartley shows how much she cares for our students and staff. She makes long-lasting memories for both her students and families and friends.

I had the pleasure of meeting Becky Hartley through shared activities through our church. Her creativity and love for relating to kids in a fun way makes her a “star”. Later she was my daughter’s teacher in middle school. Her ability to really “see” kids beyond their academics was instrumental in helping us help Dani be all she could be. We will always be grateful for her above and beyond love for her students.

I am convinced Becky Hartley does not sleep. I have done quite a bit of brainstorming and am able to conclude that not sleeping is the only possible way in which this woman can accomplish everything she does! While Becky possesses so many amazing characteristics, I would have to say the two I most admire are her intense ability to love and her dynamic inner strength. Becky loves her students, she loves her colleagues, she loves her family, and she loves life. Love is evident in everything she does. Becky also has a ferocious and resilient strength. She is able to make an impossible task look easy, laugh in the midst of heartbreak, and see goodness and joy, in all the bad. I admire the person she is, I look up to her, and I would be proud if I can one day become half the woman she is.

I have worked with Mrs. Hartley in the math department at NBAS for the last 9 years and she is an amazing, kind-hearted teacher who will go out of her way to ensure every student succeeds. But even more important than teaching the math, she makes sure students are involved in the school, doing everything she can to make a positive experience for the students. She also makes the staff feel extra loved for birthdays, baby showers, you name it! She is truly a staple of our school district and both staff and students alike are better for knowing her!

To whom it may concern, I have had the pleasure of knowing Becky for over 20 years now. Working at the same school I have witnessed her positive upbeat outlook on life . Becky also has a genuine and caring personality that shines when she is around her students. I have no hesitation in nominating Becky for this award.

Mrs. Hartley is an absolute life changer! She was my middle school math teacher and is now a colleague and math teacher for my son. She has postiviely impacted SO many adults and students here at New Buffalo Middle School over the years. She is the kind of person that adults and children want to surround themselves by. She is incredibly kind, caring, funny, and compassionate to everyone. She makes everyone feel welcome and loved. Not only does Mrs. Hartley go above and beyond during the school day but also in the evenings supporting students at sporting events and running concession stands. The list of what she does for others goes on and on. She could not be more deserving of this award!

As Mrs. Hartley's student for junior high math, I appreciated the way she demanded the most from her students while also treating kids with compassion and respect. In looking back, I think her greatest strength and what sets her apart is her ability and willingness to connect with every student, no matter what challenges he/she presented on any given day. Never being tough for the sake of being tough, she understood that sometimes kids need a break and to have someone in their corner.

Patty Posted over a year ago

Mrs. Hartley has such a love for all her students which is a blessing to have in a teacher. She treats each student the same and is there for all of them. She goes way beyond just teaching, she supports the students at sporting events and other activities. She diffently is a blessing to New Buffalo High School.

I had Mrs. Hartley when I was in sixth grade, and I'm always prepared for what comes at me because she taught me the importance of being organized and prepared. You can also tell that she really, truly, cares about each and every one of her students. She works countless hours in the concession stands at sports tournaments and events to sure that every one of her students receives a free yearbook. I also remember how one day she surprised the Science Olympiad team with cupcakes because we were at the school on a Saturday. Mrs. Hartley is an amazing, influential, dedicated teacher!

I graduated from New Buffalo High School in 1998, and I had Mrs. Hartley as my junior high math teacher. She was one of my favorite teachers in junior high. I remember her as passionate about teaching, very clear and articulate, patient, firm but fair, and always very supportive and caring for all of her students. I also recall her often making time after school with kids whenever they needed help. I know this sounds like a contradictory statement, but I remember her setting clear expectations in class and being somewhat strict, yet also being very personable and clearly demonstrated that she cared about all of her students. Mrs. Hartley, congratulations on this well-deserved nomination! Honestly, please know no matter the outcome, you have been a profound and positive life changer to all of us, and the New Buffalo School District is a much better place for having you in our school system for so long. Thank you for your many years of service. We are forever in debt to beautiful people and educators like you.

I worked at New Buffalo School District several years ago, and had the pleasure of seeing Becky in action. I remember watching her teach math to a group of middle school students and it was magic! Math did not come easily to me as a student, and I wondered how different my school career would have been with a teacher like Becky Hartley. Every student deserves a teacher like Becky. She is not only a dedicated professional, but she reaches the kids where they are. New Buffalo Area Schools is blessed to have Becky Hartley.

Mrs. Hartley has truly affected many student's lives very positively over the years. I can say that not only was she my middle school math teacher at New Buffalo, but both my children were blessed to have her several years ago as well. She makes math a very enjoyable and successful class for students at what, for many, is a time and age full of changes and growth. I was always so relieved to see her listed on my own children's class schedule over the years, because I knew she would be a terrific teacher for them. And she was. She was patient, understanding, and knowledgeable. Not only does she provide an outstanding classroom environment, she goes above and beyond after the school day ends as well. For numerous years, she ran the concession stands at middle school athletic events and recruited her students to help. She also spearheaded the "Project Pride" events at the middle school over years, which provided incentives for good behavior and grades. These were fun events such as: a movie theater trip, a minor league baseball game, and a fun game day provided to qualifying students. And the students wanted to earn these by doing what they needed to do. Mrs. Hartley has truly been one of the best New Buffalo Area Schools has ever had and she deserves this recognition and more.

Mrs Hartley was my junior high teacher. She was a very positive influence in my life, a great teacher and a wonderful role model. I was blessed to move back to the area, and when I came in for my son's orientation, she walked right up to me and gave me a big hug. She was one of my favorite teachers, and still is to this day. It's always wonderful, when your teachers teach your children. Mrs. Hartley has touched many lives throughout her career, and has impacted the lives of students in ways they don't even know until they are adults. New Buffalo is very blessed to have her as a teacher.

Mrs. Hartley deserves this award, without a doubt. We love you miss Mrs. Hartley!

Many know of her as Mrs Hartley or Becky, but I have the honor of calling her Mom. (Except for the year she was my 8th Grade Math teacher lol) My mother is what defines an exceptional teacher. I have seen first hand how much she cares about her students and how she wants them to succeed. From going into school early to meet with students that have questions to staying far past when the last bell rings. She always puts her students first to make sure they have the opportunity to succeed. I admire the passion she has for teaching and how much she loves those students. Even after 40 years of teaching, that passion is still there. During our weekly calls, at some point we talk about how the school year is going and she always talks about her students. A prime example is the conversations we have had in 2020 and the impact of the Pandemic. Her first worry is how are these students going to do via e-learning and how she can find ways to make sure they succeed. She spends hours of her own time to learn new technology, how to adjust to e-learning and more to ensure that her students do not suffer. Even outside the classroom, she is always there. She spends hours helping create a yearbook for the middle school, fundraising to ensure all students get a free yearbook, going to ALL of the school events, organizing after school programs and many more. Mrs. Hartley/Becky/Mom is always there for her students, for other faculty members of the School and for her family. I have learned so much from her over 33 years of my life from in the classroom and in everyday life. Two in particular that have really helped me succeed is the value of working hard and how to treat others. Thank you for being a life changer not only to me but your family, colleagues, students and community.

Mrs. Hartley has always been a fabulous teacher. I had her about 6 years ago and I wish she was still my teacher. She gives everything she has to help her students understand math and have fun with it. She always has a positive mindset and helps her students learn to have one as well. She is not just a teacher that teaches you the content; she is also a teacher you can personally connect with and turn to for any problem you're having. She, without a doubt, deserves this award.

Mrs. Hartley is the best teacher a person could ever have. She is the teacher you can go to when you need someone to talk to, when you're struggling with something, when you need help, or just to say hi. She is the type of person to not judge you for something that you did but instead help you get through it and be there for you. She is so sweet and kind to everyone and puts a positive impact on people's lives. She helps you be the best person you can be and pushes you to do amazing things in your life. She made me the person I am today. She has always been very close to my family and made my dad the great person he is. Mrs. Hartley will always be one of my favorite teachers and like a best friend to me. She is a life-changer for everyone around her and we are all very lucky to have her in our lives!!

Mrs. Hartley was such a great teacher. She made tough subjects fun, but most importantly, she taught us the importance of respecting one another. I’ll never forget when she validated me after completing a competition I worked very hard for, and it was that sort of affirmation that helped me see the importance of hard work and dedication at a young age. She was special like that. She provided encouragement and perspective — and it didn’t matter if you were good at the subject she was teaching, she made you feel as though you could do just about anything with the right mindset. She deserves this recognition!

Mrs.Hartley...where to even start? Mrs.Hartley is honestly one of the best teachers I've had the honor to learn from. Looking back, I wasn't one of the best students, but Mrs.Hartley saw better of me. She sees better in every student and care about everyones future. Mrs.Hartley puts so much time an effort into the community without hesitation. I honestly can say she is one of my favorite teachers. Sometimes I will just go down the middleschool hall just to talk and give hug from her and Mrs.Knoll. We'll talk and have a nice laugh about how highschool is treating me or how the new middleschoolers are treating her. Then before I know it, I have to get to the highschool side with a smile on my face. I can honestly say that was my favorite ways to start the day...oh how much I will miss her once I graduate. I love and appreciate her! Given that I had the chance, to meet an amazing person, to have her as one of my 6th grade teachers. I am a better person. She deserves this award!

Becky Hartley was my eighth grade math teacher nineteen years ago. Her positive attitude, kindness, and passion for teaching are only some of the qualities that make her an exceptional teacher. Mrs. Hartley has consistently impacted the lives of her students by being a listener, motivator, and true educator. I’ve been lucky enough to maintain ties with Mrs. Hartley after all these years and she continues to mentor nearly twenty years later. She is the true definition of a life-changer.

Mrs. Hartley's passion for helping middle school children is evident through the many endeavors she partakes in on their behalf. Aside from being an understanding, patient and knowledgeable educator, she truly is an advocate for their social and emotional well being. She makes learning fun, engages children in class and makes everyone feel welcome. Our community is very lucky to have a teacher that cares so much.

Mrs. Hartley's class was one I always looked forward to! One of those classes where even though you might not like the subject, you still love it due to the way the teacher treated you, the others and the subject. Making it a lot more fun! She always had a smile on and knew how to put on your face as well.

Hilary Cunningham Posted over a year ago

Mrs. Hartley is not only a fantastic and inspiring teacher, but she is also an incredible support to staff and students. She never fails to put a smile on our faces with her witty sense of humor and immense kindness. When we go for walks during our lunch, she is regularly stopped by former students who want to say, "hi" and they often tell her how much they miss having her has a teacher. Mrs Hartley has a special way of making each person feel truly seen and heard. She deserves this nomination. Best of luck, Mrs Hartley!

When I was in 6th grade, i had the pleasure of having Mrs. Hartley as my math teacher. Everyone around me, including my parents who had her, was telling me what a great teacher Mrs. Hartley was. When school started, I was absolutely amazed by the fact that Mrs. Hartley is not only a great teacher and role model to each and every student, but a friend. No matter the issue of what she was doing, she always made time for you. I had always been sufficient in math, but I had never particularity enjoyed it. After the first few weeks I loved math and was much more engaged and interested in the subject. In that year, I not only learned mathematical skills, I learned valuable life skills from this wonderful teacher. Now, 3 years later, Mrs. Hartley will still stop me in the hallway and ask me how i'm doing. She is such and amazing person and teacher that drives you to be the best version of yourself that you can be. She not only encourages us to be good people, she truly is the epitome of a good person. I am so blessed to have had such a great teacher that had such an impact on my life.

Mrs. Hartley is such an amazing teacher. She has put all her students first whether its her awesome project pride fields trips ,that includes: skiing, movies, and bowling. She also does this awesome Saint Judes Dodge Ball Tournaments. Mrs. Hartley does everything possible to help students. Mrs. Hartley puts in extra time, which includes working the concession stands, problem solving day, and takes pictures for the year book. she still manages to teach and do all that in 24 hours. Her great sense of humor always get me laughing especially when she said she was going to drop kick me. Mrs. Hartley is probably one of the best teachers I will have and everyone will have at New Buffalo Area Schools.

Mrs.Harley is one of my favorite teachers and she always is funny and helpful. She is nice, caring, and awesome. The first trimester I was struggling a lot and she helped me get back and going again. She is so nice. She is so happy because in the beginning of this second trimester I have super good grades and I am doing so good she says, and she is helping me make sure I don't fall behind. I appreciate that so much. She is my favorite teacher. I would get held back purposely just to have her again, but I won't do that because she wants me to do good and move on with good grades. So I am trying my hardest to stay with my good grades all the way through this trimester. I am so glad, happy, and most of all lucky to even have her as a teacher. I was contemplating about even coming to New Buffalo, but I am glad I did because I wouldn't have her as a teacher. I was getting bad grades, getting in trouble a lot, and just overall digging myself a deep hole that would be hard to get out of at my old school. Mrs.Harley has completely changed my point of view and she has made me so happy. At my old school I got super sad and mad at everything. I took it out on my family and I regret that, but now I've changed. Mrs.Harley helped me be a better person and I am so glad about it.

She made me not hate Math because I defiantly hated math before i came here! When I heard about all the things she has done for the school I just about exploded with happiness. That is sooooo nice because she didn't have to do all of those things. She did the Yearbooks and the little showcases in the front of the school! So good job, Mrs. Hartley!

Mrs. Hartley is a really great teacher she taught me alot. Like she taught me to be neat and not run in the hallways and i'm really thankful she was my teacher and if she wasnt who knows what would have happened. She has the most school spirit i've ever seen anyone have she has more than me and i'm a student. She plans a lot of stuff and she is super nice and funny she is like family to me she has done so much and she encourages people to try new things but i am really thankful to know her and she is a really important person and I hope more people get the same experience I did. If she doesn't win this might be rigged because she deserves this and she loves this school more than anyone and she loves her job and she means so much to everyone in this school. During 6th grade, I didn't know the importance of working hard for my grades. But this all changed when Mrs. Hartley became my teacher. Mrs. Hartley always held me accountable for my homework not only for math but also for my other classes too. Without her, I wouldn't be the responsible student I am today. For me, Mrs. Hartley wasn't only a teacher, she was also a role model. To this day I inspire to be as kind and helpful as she was to me.

Mrs. Hartley has been the best math teacher in my entire life. Mrs. Hartley appreciates us and has the best sense of humor that I have ever seen a teacher have. She has taught us so much. Some of our families have been Mrs. Hartley's students. I might not know the other candidates, but I know one and she has touched all of us in one or multiple ways. We love Mrs. Hartley with all our hearts, maybe even more. Mrs. Hartley is the heart of this school; the blood is her kindness. This might be corny, but you can't spell heart without Hartley.

Mrs. Hartley, my 6th grade math teacher, helped me with anything I needed help with. From personal problems to helping you on homework assignments, Mrs. Hartley was always there for you. I had many homework struggles last year and wasn't meeting the qualifications for the honor role, but Mrs. Hartley was there, helping me along the way. In the end, I made it on the honor role and it's all thanks to Mrs. Hartley and I can't thank her enough. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting the school year last year, Mrs. Hartley helped each and every 6th grader with any math or World Geography question they had. Mrs. Hartley is one of my favorite teachers and the most amazing person in the world!

She does Project Pride which is a fun event that we do every trimester. This is always really fun because all the kids get to go willingly and she always made sure of that. She also has the annual dodgeball tournament that everyone enjoys paying so much. I enjoyed her class so much and I wish she was still my teacher. She truly is so sweet.

Mrs. Hartley is such an amazing, funny, and kind teacher who I am proud to say was my 6th grade math teacher. She has helped me understand math and she makes her classroom such a fun and enjoyable place to be at. Mrs.Harley is always willing to volunteer and has really built up our school! I can't image what our school would've been like without her. If something needs to be done, I know Mrs.Hartley would step-up and give a helping hand. She goes above and beyond with everything she does, from helping students, to organizing a huge school event. New Buffalo is so lucky to have Mrs. Hartley. She has a huge heart and cares about everyone's feelings. You can always see her with a smile on her face, which can really change a student's day.

Mrs. Hartley is an amazing teacher and miss not having her as a teacher this year. Last year I had her for 6th grade and then the pandemic happened. I was sad that I was not going to have her for the rest of the year. She even at the end of the year came to my house with Mrs. Knoll and Mrs. Copper to say goodbye until next school year. They came with posters and nice sweet treats for us. I was so glad that she came to see us. Mrs. Hartley was not just nice, she was an amazing teacher too. Mrs. Hartley was my Math teacher and I learned a lot from her. Most of the math skills I am using this year she taught to me. I wish I had her this year, but I at least still get to see and talk to her in the hallways. Mrs. Hartley has definitely been a life changer!

Mrs. Hartley is one of the best teachers I've had from pre-school and 8th grade. She taught me so much in 6th grade and I can't thank her enough for what she has done for me and my classmates when we were about 11-12 years old! She does so much for this school and I appreciate what she does every month, week, and day for us! She is always trying everyday to make math fun and challenging at the same time, and that's why she's one of the best! When I came into the 6th grade, I was nervous and afraid. I didn't even know how to open my locker until the second week! Every day I was always excited to go to her class! Math excited me the most! She is really funny, really sweet, and a really good person to talk to as a friend. She never lets a student fail without her help and makes sure they get the help they need! I could honestly write a whole documentary about her, but this is ok for now! I cannot thank her enough for what she has done for this community of New Buffalo.

Mrs. Hartley was my 6th grade math teacher. She is always so dedicated to our middle school and each student separately. She puts so much effort into giving us a great school environment. Mrs. Hartley is an uplifting person who motivates you to try your best in everything you do. She plans a ski trip for our middle school every year, and she taught me how to ski, but more importantly how to continue trying. Mrs. Hartley can make anyone who is unhappy feel better with her funny personality. She also works with Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and finds new ways to help as many students as possible. As an eighth grader now, I still appreciate what she does for us. It's amazing that there's a person so unique, so kind, so humble, and so much of a supporter. I had her for my sixth grade world geography and math. Let's just say, my time in her class was never, ever sad or boring. She made me laugh and was the best teacher anyone could ask for. She not only was an amazing teacher, but she also cared about her students, not just their grades, but their actual lives. She could tell if something was wrong, and was always so sympathetic and helpful. She went above and beyond during e- learning. It was new to us all, and she was always really understanding, for example, if we were having trouble with an assignment, she would do as much in her power to help. She would arrange zoom meetings, and help students. We couldn't be more lucky to have someone so passionate about our school, and our students. We love you so much Mrs. Hartley, and you have touched and changed lives. Thank you for teaching me and being an amazing person. You made my sixth grade year a year I'll never forget.

Mrs. Hartley is probably the nicest teacher at our school. She has done so many things that she didn´t have to. She sets up field trips, dogeball games, and many other things. She always has a smile on her face and she is so caring.

I have Mrs.Hartley as a teacher. She teaches me my Social Studies and Math. This is what I like about Mrs. Hartley: I like Mrs.Hartley because when I don't understand a math problem on homework she helps me with it or if I'm not getting a lesson she'll take the time out of her day to help me after school. I like when Mrs. Hartley does these Mindfulness Activities. They help us relieve our stress and help me focus more. I like Mrs.Hartley because she puts our things we have to remember to do on the board. I like Mrs.Hartley because she has the schedule time on the board. She is the best teacher!

Mrs. Hartley was one of the best teachers i have ever had. She was smart, funny, and a great teacher overall because she actually understands the students and figures out our problems and how to help us. Mrs. Hartley always gave us second chances when we messed up and she always wanted for us to have the best 6th grade experience and that's why I believe Mrs. Hartley should win this award.

Mrs. Hartley is one of the best teachers. She is so involved in our community and our school in the brightest ways. Mrs Hartley cares about everyone so much, she´s earned a place in all our hearts. She´s not just a teacher to us but a dear friend and someone we can go to if we need help. Thank you Mrs Hartley.

As a former student of hers, I can confirm that Mrs. Hartley was an absolutely wonderful teacher. Every day I would walk into her class, and there she would be smiling and laughing. You can be sure that a day with Mrs. Hartley will not be boring. There were many jokes, much chuckling and more memories than can be counted. I truly believe that Mrs. Hartley is worthy of this award, not only because of her talent in leading a classroom, but because of her tremendous effort in helping the school in general. She ran SADD as a co-overseer, she ran project pride(a reward system for students), she worked concession stands, and she worked many late hours. This award could not even begin to compensate for the effort, care and love she has put into the district, but it would be a great start.

Mrs. Hartley was one of the best teachers I've ever had during the time I've been at New Buffalo. She was an extraordinary math teacher and I feel I have grown the most as a student in the year I was with her. She is also the reason I'm in advanced math. Mrs. Hartley was the director of many of the school's fundraisers which were very fun and engaging.

Becky Hartley is an invaluable resource to our school. From planning Project Pride events for our students, coordinating the yearbook, working the concession stand, to baking sweets for her fellow teachers, she is someone that helps keep New Buffalo Middle School going. Her students enjoy her class and she always goes the extra mile to make sure that they understand the material. I am a better teacher for having her as a colleague!

I really do truly think Mrs. Hartley deserves this award. Mrs. Hartley is a very understanding teacher and will wait to make sure you understand what she is teaching. I remember going up to her a few times last year to tell her why I was upset and I don't know if she remembers or not but she talked me through it to make sure I was okay. I also remember I didn't understand what we were doing so she went out of her way to teach me. As well as that, she did a couple of fundraisers for our school and other people. All of those things prove she really does deserve this because she's always there for you. With that being said I think she deserves this award and i'm so thankful I had her as a teacher.

Mrs. Hartley is the most funny, joyful, smart, every other positive word for her. She is a life changer. She always knows what the best answer is. She's helped me a lot in 6th grade with math when I struggled. She always knew what to say, do, and help out in the best way possible. If she wasn't my math teacher I would probably not be in 7th grade by now. Mrs. Hartley help me pass 6th grade and now I want to help her win this prize. She's done so much for the school and the other stuff and she deserves something for me. She's the best teacher in the world and I wouldn't trade her. EVER.

Mrs. Hartley was my 7th grade Math teacher was such a positive influence at a time when it was needed most. I began my teaching career in Florida and when I moved home and heard that Mrs. Harley was still teaching, I was elated to know that my children would be able to understand why she had been such an important person in my education. As athletic director, I am usually here when most everyone else is not, however, Mrs. Hartley spends more of her "off" hours here than any other teacher I have been involved with in my 15 years of education. As the head of the "Project Pride" initiative in the middle school she spends countless hours in the concession stand mentoring our youth and helping them earn hours for the various incentives they can earn throughout the year. Mrs. Hartley also makes sure to come to extracurricular activities to support the students and to take pictures for the Middle School year book. Aside from being present in her students' academic and extracurricular affairs, Mrs. Harley has always provided a level of comfort that you would only know by being in her orbit. I am forever grateful that the influence Mrs. Hartley had on me 31 years ago is the same influence she has on my children today.

There are not many like Mrs. Hartley! In the six years that I have taught down the hall from her, she never let it known or shown if she was having a bad day. Every day Mrs. Hartley greets students, colleagues, and staff with the warmest smile. Mrs. Hartley always takes the time to listen and makes you feel like what you have to say is the most important thing in the world at that moment. Two oof my own children have had her, one now a senior, and they still talk about her or her class often. Mrs. Hartley always goes the extra mile to help run concession stands. She consistently puts in days way past her regular scheduled hours. Mrs. Hartley is an inspiration to students and staff, and she is a dear friend.

Mrs. Hartley is an amazing teacher and person in every way! She was my math teacher and also my coach in the late ‘80s. She is such a caring person with a radiant smile every time I see her! She taught so many in my family. She has always gone out of her way to teach her students and she has a way to teach so kids understand, which is a true gift! She is a great role model in our community and still to this day every time I see her, she asks how my family is. I now, at 46 years old, not only think of Mrs. Hartley as one of the best teachers I’ve ever had, but also as a friend.

I have known and worked with Becky Hartley for 32 years. She is a mentor to new teachers, she’s an inspiration for old teachers, she is a “GOAT” (greatest of all times)! I can’t say enough about how much she has changed so many lives of the kids that have walked through the door of her classroom. They will come back 30+years later (and she remembers their names!) and thank her, catch up with her, and she always makes the time for them and is interested in what they’ve done with their life’s!

Becky Hartley is an amazing person and an even more amazing teacher! My daughter lacked confidence and struggled in math. Mrs. Hartley helped her so much when she got to 6th grade math. She taught the subject patiently and clearly, and always made herself available for extra help at lunch and after school. She also hosted a special "Saturday School" every other Saturday through the school year where any student could voluntarily come in to school and get extra help or just work on homework. (Mrs. Harley's homemade cupcakes and cookies were always an extra draw to Saturday School!) Mrs. Hartley helped my daughter be successful in math which made her a much more confident student on into high school. That meant so much to me as a parent, and to this day my daughter says Mrs. Hartley is a 10/10 on the teacher scale! She is truly a LifeChanger!

Mrs Hartley is an amazing teacher. She was one of my favorites. She has so much patience and really made math fun. I loved having her as my junior high math teacher and now my son has her in middle school and loves her as well. No one deserves this nomination more than Mrs Hartley.

Mrs Hartley took my 6th grader who hated math and struggled to get C’s into a confident 7th grader who received an A- in our first trimester. I will always be grateful she came into our lives and far more than just an educator.

Although I have not know Mrs. Hartley very long, My daughter was lucky enough to have her during 6th grade. Her year was cut short due to COVID and the pandemic and I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by Mrs. Hartley’s immediate action to jump in and keep these kids going with little notice or tools in place. Her organization and strength during a time no one knew what to expect was admirable. Her patience with the students on zoom calls and never skipped a beat or took a smile off her face! The last attempt to come say good bye to your students during covid forever will hold a place in our hearts! If anyone is more deserving it’s you!

So much to say about Mrs. Hartley! The most difficult class for me was always math, Mrs. Hartley always found a way to make it applicable to life and easy to understand. I remember her being so patient and supportive, but most importantly I will always remember her treating me as my own person. Life lessons were more important than math problems, and she was always there. Love you Mrs. Hartley!

Mrs. Hartley was my 7th grade math teacher in 1995-1996. As a transplant to the public middle school from a tiny private elementary school, she was so warm and made me feel welcome immediately. Her class was my favorite even though I didn’t love math because of her. She managed to make math fun and engaging and prepared me for the rest of my math career. She also gave me my only detention ever for “talking too much” which she had patiently put up with for far too long. When I occasionally see Mrs. Hartley as an adult, she is still so kind, funny and engaging.

Becky Hartley over the years has literally become part of our family. She taught all 4 of my children and is always invited to every milestone that our family has had. She is first on the list. I also worked at the middle school with her and she is exceptional in every way. She is a great teacher, a friend and makes a point of getting to know each child and their families. Becky makes sure that every student counts, there is certainly No Child Left Behind with her. She involves all students one way or another as well as staff members. Such a positive person, mentor and teacher. I cannot think of another person that would be a better choice.

I'm not only blessed to call this amazing women a past teacher of mine but also my mom. She has been an incredible teacher and supporter of the community of New Buffalo for over 40 years. There is not a time that i am out in public whether with or without her that someone comes up to me to say how great of a teacher she is and how much she has impacted their lives. She works countless hours in and out of school. She is always there for her students supporting them in all their extracurricular activities. She fights her kids and her colleagues when those times come. I can confidently say that she is more than likely everyones favorite in the school district. Siblings of her students say they can't wait to have Mrs. Hartley as teacher based off their sibling's experiences with her. She makes sure every year that her students not only learn but have fun too. She creates a theme each year for them to learn and live by. Each winter she has Problem Solving day, where the middle school is split up into groups and earn points for different problem solving stations. I could go on and on about the footprint she leaves on this community. All you need to know is she this women puts her heart and soul into her school and students.
