Music that Describes Angela

Angela Dixon was nominated by her colleague, Kelley Johnson.

In his inaugural 2009 Gates Foundation letter, Bill Gates recognized that “if you want your child to get the best education possible, it is actually more important to get him assigned to a great teacher than to a great school.” Mrs. Dixon is one of those great teachers. She transforms the science lab into an environment of exploration and discovery for every student who enters her classroom. When her school day ends, she takes her love of science to children throughout her community.

As a teacher, Mrs. Dixon has an innate gift to reach all levels of students, whether it is through a variety of media or with an earthquake experiment in which students use straws to build a house that can withstand a violent shake. She uses project-based learning to enhance instruction and expects students to apply their knowledge in assessment. Her tests and assignments are designed to develop critical thinking skills through reading, writing, and drawing. In fact, her breadth of teaching experience gives her the ability to infuse multiple areas of science instruction into any class she is teaching (she has served as an instructor at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and taught earth science, middle school math, Biomedical Health Science, marine science, biology, anatomy and physiology, and AP Biology).

Mrs. Dixon maintains high standards in the classroom, expecting her students to be on time and prepared for each day’s lesson. If a student falls behind, she reaches out, spending hours before and after school to help them get back on track, while keeping the parents involved and informed. This past spring, she worked with two young men during her planning periods to help them with the science portion of the ACT exam. Before their exam, she bought them pencils and healthy snacks to get them through the four hour test.  These seniors, desperate to raise their ACT scores to gain college admittance, knew she could explain the test to them in a way that made sense. They both earned scores that resulted in college offers.

The scope of Mrs. Dixon’s impact is immense:

  • This year, she and a colleague created a Trauma Week experience for her students. This week-long experience included multiple simulations and lessons from local paramedics, firefighters, burn unit teams, emergency room nurses, and public safety officials.  The highlight of the week was the landing of the critical care rescue helicopter on the football field. The pilot and medic dropped off a “burned infant,” and the students had to transport her to the “emergency room” and care for her burns. This is a week her students will never forget.
  • With a coworker, she developed a high school college preparatory Biomedical Health Science curriculum that includes instruction in all areas of the medical field, from physician to forensic detective. One aspect of the curriculum is an outreach component where her students work with younger students to teach them basic health and hygiene. Her students conduct eye screenings, scoliosis screenings, and wound care lessons.

  • As part of her biology curriculum, she partnered with Dr. Jon Audia from the University of South Alabama’s Medical School to create an e-coli lab that paired medical students with her freshman biology students. Once her students completed the lab, she developed a cross-curriculum laboratory analysis writing assignment with the English department so students could publish their findings. Her students' reports were then graded by the medical students. This partnership has also secured internships at USA’s Medical School for her students.

  • Her earth science students have culminated their study with a trip to the Appalachian Mountains, various caverns, and a gold mine. Students created science journals to document their field trip. Mrs. Dixon planned their entire trip and secured funding through scholarships and private donations so that all students, no matter their financial background, could experience the real world beyond their textbooks..

  • As a marine biologist, she volunteered to lead middle school students on yearly trips to study the biodiversity of the Gulf of Mexico, which included swimming with manatees, studying mangroves, and snorkeling among coral reefs. Of course, she was in the water with the students.

  • For ten years, she has mentored a robotics team that has advanced to the finals five times. Although her degree specializes in marine science, she has taught herself skills in computer programming, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering so that she can teach her students, from 6th grade to 12th, how to create a working (and winning) robot.

  • Her robotics class entered the Next-Gen Mask Challenge, designing and prototyping a 3-D printed mask with a fan. They are awaiting results from the judges.

  • Through her work with robotics, she has volunteered at multiple summer camps, scouting organizations, and the Boys and Girls Club to teach students about the STEM field, developing a curriculum and training her students to be the science teachers at the camps.

  • For four years, she has been invited to be a presenter at the University of South Alabama’s Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science (GEMS) workshop, where she speaks to the parents about the many ways their daughters can get involved in STEM education through programs such as robotics.

  • With her students, she established her school’s first blood drive, now an annual event.

  • She has trained hundreds of students and teachers in performing CPR and obtaining certification. While taking her class, two of her students encountered an emergency situation at the beach when a girl was bleeding profusely after a traumatic injury.  They addressed the bleeding and contacted the paramedics. They are credited for saving this girl’s life, and they did this because of Mrs. Dixon.

  • For St. Luke’s, she established a science curriculum for middle and high school curricula at the newly established high school, ensuring vertical alignment for all grade levels.

  • Throughout her ten years of teaching Biomedical Science, dozens of her students have gone on to pursue careers in the medical field.

  • Through her work as a sea turtle nest monitor on Dauphin Island, she organized a presentation by sea turtle scientist Rachel McDonald that was attended by more than 400 students from Mobile and Baldwin counties. These students all learned how trash and pollution affects our waterways and the animals who live in them.

Because of her efforts, Mrs. Dixon is held in the highest regard by students and faculty. Although science concepts are often difficult for some to understand, she knows her students and their potential to learn, and she has a passion for science that motivates them to learn. She sets high standards for herself and her students, and she meets them with compassion and character. She has had to make difficult choices, such as asking a student to leave the robotics team because of unacceptable behavior, but welcoming him back when he was ready to help his team advance to the final competition. This student is now a member of the United States Air Force, and he credits her with his success and love for science. Struggling students know she will help them perform their best, and it is often these students who exceed expectations and enter STEM fields after high school. Faculty members know they can turn to her for anything from cross-curricular projects to advice and mentoring.

"Hundreds of students acknowledge Mrs. Dixon as their inspiration to love science as much as she does. These students are entering our military, higher education system, and workforce having benefited from a teacher who believed in them and sparked a lifelong passion for science and learning," said Johnson. "If Mrs. Dixon is chosen as a winner, it will only confirm what her students and colleagues know. She is one of the great teachers that Bill Gates, and all of us, consider essential to our children's development."

There is no doubt that Ms. Dixon is rigid and steady as she goes when necessary. Her credentials and experience prove it. I’ve see Ms. Dixon’s qualities equally apparent in a different context though. You cross a bridge to get to where Ms. Dixon lives. It’s at the south end of the end of I65 that starts in Chicago I think. There are all kinds of excited kids that end up in the surf on Dauphin Island AL in the summer. This is Ms. Dixon’s backyard classroom as I’ve seen it. There is a place where novelty occurs. A time of chaos where order and disorder interlace. Where the kids are engaged with the creatures of the sea (where the action is). Ms. Dixon is a teacher of opportunity in the ambiguous areas where we play and expand. When the pupil is ready the teacher appears. Thanks Ms. Dixon

St Luke’s is blessed to have Mrs. Dixon as a teacher, mentor, and example. She excels in creating interesting lesson plans that captivate the students. She gets personal with her students, learning their strengths and helping them through their difficulties. She inspires through her love of volunteerism and encourages creativity in her leadership with the Robotics Team. I am so thankful that both of my children had the opportunity to learn with Mrs. Dixon. She is a teacher that brings her whole heart to her teaching.

Having taught at three new schools in four years, I have had a range of experiences with heads of science departments. Mrs. Dixon was both supportive and reliable, but above all she was a fantastic sounding board for ideas. I really admired how hard she worked to always be improving for the students. Even with so many years under her belt, she was never complacent. If something had worked for years past but didn't seem to be working with a particular class, she didn't hesitate to innovate her approach. Conversations with her inspired many of my lessons whether it was rearranging the layout of a lab to make it run smoother or an idea for an entirely new activity to get students engaged in science. Her effect on the students was obvious. Students enjoyed spending time in her classroom so much that they would come in to talk to her during free periods, and they would rely on her help in classes that she didn't even teach. I learned a lot from Mrs. Dixon as a colleague in the year that I worked with her and I feel blessed to call her a friend.

Mrs. Dixon taught both my boys at St. Luke’s throughout their years there. I was always so impressed with how she would teach her students to learn and be accountable. Both my boys are in college now where one is engineering major and the other is biology major (premed). I know that Mrs. Dixon made a major impact on their paths. She is very worthy of this recognition and award.

I have had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Dixon as a mentor for the St Luke’s Robotics team. She is a co-sponsor of the team and coordinates the technical aspects of the team so we’ve worked together each of the past four years during the robotics competition. She routinely sacrifices personal time by working countless hours to ensure the students have the best experience possible. She is always supportive of the team, particularly during difficult and stressful situations near the end of the competition. I really appreciate that even though she is completely exhausted from 6 weeks of non stop activity she is the biggest cheerleader in the stands come game day. I can’t think of a better person to receive this award as what Mrs. Dixon does is truly life changing for many on the robotics team.

Having known Mrs. Dixon from my first years in elementary school until my high school graduation, I can honestly say her exuberance for learning is unparalleled and inspiring to even the most reluctant student. I was never drawn to my science courses, having a more innate aptitude for the social sciences, but the years I was in Mrs. Dixon's classroom stand out as the moments when science was fun, engaging, and part of the day I happily anticipated. Even after I left school, even with the countless students that have been on her roster in her long career, she has never failed to make me feel remembered, appreciated, and cared for whenever our paths cross. Mrs. Dixon is a reason to smile and have faith in today's education system.

Mrs. Dixon is a great teacher that has helped me over the years: 6th grade Earth Science, 9th grade Biology, and now 11th grade AP-Biology. With her help, she made my first year on the Upper Campus an easy and fun one. Her teaching skills and note-taking tips have assisted me with my studies and brought me to where I currently am. With all her labs and fun projects, she made those years fun and memorable. She's super passionate about what she does and no one is more deserving than her.

Mrs Dixon is a spectacular teacher, and I am glad to be taught by her. She truly cares about each student, both in the classroom, and personally. She has touched the hearts of every student under her, and has helped me grow my love for life and medical science. Overall, Mrs. Dixon is a wonderful teacher, and a great person

Kristen Perez Posted over a year ago

Mrs. Dixon is a great model of a science teacher. She welcomed me into the department and always offers to help me figure out or set up a lab for my students. She brings so much energy to her courses that the students feed off of that and find a love for science! During my first semester on campus, I was introduced to the many traditions SLES has. One of those traditions involved parents and the students announcing what college they will attend during a school wide assembly. One student did not have parents present and Mrs. Dixon waited for that student across the stage with arms wide open and a huge smile. That stuck with me.

mamie Posted over a year ago

I have had very little interaction with Mrs.Dixon due to the fact that I am not in her class yet. Mrs. Dixon came into our biology class one day when we were using microscopes. She was one of the nicest people ever and so helpful to not just me but everyone. Also in my first year playing soccer we had the parents split weeks to bring snacks for our team. Every time she came into our locker room she was so sweet and encouraged us to play our best game no matter what. She has the best energy ever and is so inspirational. We all love you Mrs.Dixon!!

I have watched Angie develop as a teacher since she first started at St. Lukes over 20 years ago. Her focus has always been on finding ways to capture her students interest while making learning fun and, at the same time, preparing them for future opportunities. She has spent vast amounts of time and energy designing and planning extra curricular activities. From conducting field trips to coaching the robotics team, she is always looking for ways to integrate the classroom experience with the needs the local community and our society. When a person puts that much time, energy, and enthusiasm into what they do, it has to be something they love and, as a teacher, something they love to share. That may be the most important lesson she teaches her students and the best lesson any of us can learn. Do what you love and do it with passion.

I hope you win Mrs Dixon because you made a huge difference in my nephews life coming to at Luke’s in the middle of the year as a new student you made him feel welcome and were totally committed to helping him get caught up even meeting with me in the parking lot after school before school whatever it took you were there for us both! Forever grateful! Hope you win! You deserve it!

Mrs Dixon is an amazing teacher and colleague. She dedicates so much time to her students in both science and robotics. She has also given much of her free time to help with fundraising for the girls soccer team over the years and always supports her students in all of their endeavors. She has impacted so many lives at St.Luke’s, including mine, and she is so deserving of this award.

Mrs. Dixon was my teacher several times throughout my middle and high school years. She was always very knowledgeable, but most importantly she knew how to communicate the material to us in a way we would understand. She wasn’t a typical teacher. She was fun and knew how to get us involved. She was always a smiling and friendly face in the hallway, wanting to know how you were doing. Everyone who knows her knows she is deserving of this award. She is amazing!

I have had the good fortune to team teach with Mrs. Dixon for a number of years. She has been instrumental in the development and implmentation of our flagship BIomedical Sciences Program. Angie has a passion for teaching that is apparent from the moment you step in any of her classes. She challenges her students daily and inspires her colleagues to be the best version of themselves. She is also the definition of a life long learner who devours any article she can find that relates to advancements in the curriculum she is presenting. I am blessed to know her and have her as a mentor and friend. I can think of no one that is more deserving of this award.

Mrs Dixon is a wonderful and great person. When I was in fifth grade I was apart of St. Luke’s Coastal Kids Quiz team (I was not even one of her students yet, or on the same campus). She spent her free time teaching us in a hands on lesson about our local estuary and sea life at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. I think she should win this award because her passion is teaching truly teaching kids.

Mrs. Dixon goes above and beyond to make the biomed program informative and entertaining. Even as things have changed due to the pandemic, Mrs. Dixon has adapted the program so that we can continue to be safe, while participating in hands-on learning experiences. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to participate in St. Luke’s biomed program and am especially grateful to have a teacher who devotes as much time and effort as she does to pique the interests of her students in all different types of medical fields.

I've attended many of the Robotics competitions and have witnessed Angela's enthusiasm and support for her team. She dressed up in tutu's and cheered like one of the kids for the spirit award. I know the many weekends she has driven 45 minutes one way to be there to work with the team on Saturdays - and Sundays. She's a 7 day- 80 hour a week teacher and wonders if she can do more. It's obvious the students love and support here. These comments make me proud - and cry a little. Love you, Angie!

Mrs. Dixon was my second mother before she ever taught me in a classroom. She takes every experience as a learning experience and finds true excitement in teaching, even if it was a mini lesson about the wildlife I would find on the beach as a kid. Not only did Mrs. Dixon go on to teach me earth science in middle school and freshman biology, but she was with me through every milestone in my life and one of my biggest cheerleaders. Even now, as I am a sophomore in college, she still checks up on me to make sure I am not only succeeding in all of my science classes but that I am happy and healthy. I am not the only student who grew up feeling like part of her family, nor the only student who was truly inspired by her passion for the sciences. She has touched and continues to touch so many students' lives and sparks a genuine interest in learning within every student she teaches. I can think of no person more humble, passionate, and deserving of such an honor.

Mrs Dixon is one of the best teachers for teaching outside the book. Her hands on approach makes the learning fun, innovative and relatable to all grades. She is also caring and willing to come in early, stay late or use her lunch and planning periods to help any child that needs more instruction. She is simply the best!

Zach McCleery Posted over a year ago

I have no idea where to begin when it comes to talking about my favorite teacher from my 15 years attending St. Luke's Episcopal School. I first met her in kindergarten because she was the mother of one of my good friends Allie. I have had the pleasure of being one of Mrs. Dixon's students for three and a half different courses. She taught me Earth Science in 6th grade, Biology in 9th grade, Biomedical Sciences in 10th and the second semester of Anatomy and Physiology in 12th grade. My senior year she picked up our A&P course on top of her already full schedule when our regular teacher went on maternity leave. Oh, and I forgot to mention that she was my robotics coach for seven years! Now, that just explains how diverse of a science teacher she is. Her knowldege of the sciences seemed endless and if you were to find that one question that she did not know the answer, then she would look it up and have the answer by the next day. However, all of those great things are not why she is my favorite teacher. The reason is simple. She helped me grow into the man I am today. She is the one that helped spark and encourage my interest in engineering. She is the one that helped me find the love of prehospital emergency medicine (because she was once an EMT!) and why I am now a licensed paramedic at the age of 21. But most importantly she is truly like a second mom who helped motivate and push me to better myself. She has encouraged me in all of my endeavors and was my first choice to serve on my Eagle Scout Board of Review. I am confident there is no one better qualified or more deserving of this prestigious award. She is by the very definition a Life Changer. #lcoy

In my profession as the District Attorney, we see so many students who have never had a teacher make a difference in their life. Well let me say, Angie Dixon is one of those teachers who DOES make a difference in all of her students lives. She goes the extra mile to figure out how each student best learns and she tailors her teaching to ALL of her students. The ability to really teach students in an environment where they don’t feel like they are being taught but actually learn their work and life skills on top of that is invaluable. Angie is the entire package and we are so very fortunate to have her leaving a lasting impression of learning and life skills on the children in our community.

Mrs Dixon has taught my child science through middle school and high school. She is an exceptional teacher and mentor. She consistently hold a high standard of educating and guiding the students, not only in science but in life. She invests her time and care in each student and it shows in their belief in themselves, their understand of science, and their ACT scores. We will forever be grateful for her being a part of our daughters life.

I have had Mrs Dixon as my Earth Science teacher in 6th grade, Biology teacher in 9th grade, Biomed teacher in 10th grade, and this year she is my AP Biology and Biomed teacher once again. Throughout the many years I have had Mrs. Dixon she has continually created a fun and supportive learning environment. She not only teaches her students, but she teaches her students how to apply what they have learned through fun labs such as building houses out of straws to withstand earthquakes, an annual trauma week where we get to follow a patient through the recovery process (and see a helicopter land on school campus), or even a lab designed by the students to test out the effectiveness of the masks we now have to wear. Not only does she make learning science fun, she makes it easy. She puts countless hours into her lessons and staying before or after school to make sure her students are picking up the information she is teaching. As an AP Biology student this year, she has helped me numerous times to make sure I am really getting the material. Besides helping us thrive in her class, she wants all of her students to thrive as people. She teaches us skills that we can use outside of her classroom and carry with us for life! I could not think of anyone more deserving of receiving this accolade!

Mrs. Dixon is an amazing teacher, as evidenced by her long list of accomplishments. When I first had her in the sixth grade, I became aware of a whole new level of teachers. This is not to say that my previous teachers had been unsatisfactory, but the amount of effort that Mrs. Dixon put into her class was unmatched. Mrs. Dixon became the benchmark to which I compared other teachers; were they as fun and expert as Mrs. Dixon? I have had the pleasure of having her as a teacher both my freshman and senior year, and she does not limit herself to the textbook; she brings in examples from the real world and gives us projects that help us understand the information instead of just memorize it. Beyond just a teacher, though, Mrs. Dixon is a caring mentor. One of the most vivid memories I have of her goes back to sixth grade, to when I was having a bad week and was just feeling down. I don't know if I sighed oddly or had a sad expression, but Mrs. Dixon noticed and just checked in with me to make sure I was ok. This simple action of caring made a memory that has stuck with me for six years, and it characterizes just one piece of the amazing person that is Mrs. Dixon. She is a teacher, a mentor, and a friend, and I will never forget her and the impact she has had on me over the course of my time at St. Luke's.

We are so proud Mrs. Dixon has been nominated. We know how fortunate our daughter and school have been to have Mrs. Dixon as a teacher, now the world gets to know. She is a phenomenal educator. She is encouraging, tough, helpful and inspiring to our youth. Not only does she want students to learn but to also explore and think for themselves. She has spent countless hours with the kids, robotics, and many other programs for which she will never be compensated except for our appreciation and seeing the results in our kids’ futures.

I am so impressed with the level of commitment and passion that Mrs. Dixon has for her classes. As a parent, I know that my child has benefitted greatly from his time in her classroom. As a middle school science teacher, it makes me so happy to know that when my former students move up in to her classroom, they are going to be taken to the next level of understanding and that they will see a great example of a lifelong learner. thank you is not adequate enough to express my appreciation for all she does for her students.

While I have not yet personally had a child blessed to be in Mrs. Dixon's classroom as a student, one of my sons has had the experience of being on her robotics team. He was one of the youngest members of the team, but Mrs. Dixon created an environment that allowed the older students to be leaders and mentor the younger students under her guidance and supervision. Not only does Mrs. Dixon share her knowledge with the students, but she allows them to flourish in the development of skills that will empower them to thrive in life, effectuating an integral component of our school's mission statement.

Where would our science and BioMed departments at St. Luke’s be today without Mrs. Dixon? For me, I honestly don’t think it could have achieved the many great things it has so far, making Mrs. Dixon a vital piece to the puzzle. I’ve always considered it one of my greatest mistakes was not joining BioMed with Mrs. Dixon, I see students all year partaking in fun yet instructive events, and all led by Mrs. Dixon. She’s truly shaped the BioMed field at St. Lukes and developed a new generation of doctors and nurses. In addition to this, Mrs. Dixon has always been an instructive, knowledgeable, helpful, and fun teacher to work with. Throughout my years with her from 9th grade until 12th grade, she’s always been a teacher I can count on to turn basic learning into something enjoyable. Before her, science was a despised subject for me, always giving me average grades and average enjoyment. When she finally entered my school career, she revolutionized the way I learned, taught me new techniques, and helped me look at things from a different perspective. Since then I’ve take everything she’s taught me and applied it to school and beyond school, and has sense served as my inspiration to study medicine. Thank you Mrs. Dixon for all the wonderful memories from Ecoil Labs to Mask Labs, you truly are a once in a life time teacher. :)

I have been lucky enough to have had Mrs. Dixon for my 9th grade Biology class as well as my 12th Anatomy class. If I am ever confused or concerned about my grades she always makes sure she does the most she can do to help me pass. I have enjoyed my Anatomy class this year and it's all because of how passionate she is about teaching her classes. I wouldn't want any other teacher to teach our seniors.

When I came to St. Luke's in 9th grade, Mrs. Dixon was immediately one of my favorite teachers. Whenever I was struggling she would always find time to sit down and help me and she would always make sure I understood what was going on. She does so much for St. Luke's and I am so glad that I have had to opportunity to have her as one of my teachers.

Mrs. Dixon was my 9th grade Biology teacher and throughout my freshman year she has helped me with everything I had trouble with. This year of high school I had many questions to ask and she was always willing to stay after school and help me no matter how long it took. A quality she holds that is appreciated by students is her dedication to see her students succeed on their paths to their futures.

Since, I was in pre-k3 Mrs. Dixon has never failed to show her support for me inside the classroom and out. Whether I’m struggling with school or dealing with outside issues, Mrs. Dixon is there for me. She’s the best teacher I’ve ever had and always takes her time with her classes to really help us understand the material. Not only is her teaching method effective, it’s fun. I can’t thank Mrs. Dixon enough for helping me get through school, and become a better person outside of school. She truly is a life changer.

The first time I had Mrs. Dixon as a teacher was 9th grade Biology. Ever since then, she has been one of my favorite teachers, and now I have her again for Anatomy. She is a fun, goofy teacher who always knows how to get our attention with whatever fun takes she has on certain topics in class. She knows how to get us to smile from her puns to her dances she makes us do to wake us up for class. Ultimately, she is just an AMAZING teacher because when anyone is struggling to grasp a subject she is teaching, she makes sure to take the time to slow down and help us to understand anything we don't quite get. There are few teachers that display the type of passion while teaching that makes it difficult for students not to pay attention; Mrs. Dixon is one of those teachers. Mrs. Dixon teaches in a manner that I believe appeals to every type of learner as she constantly switches between interactive labs, lectures, projects, and more. As a student who has grown up being told to "stop looking out the window", Mrs. Dixon's passion for what she teaches and various methods of teaching have kept me excited to attend her class and my eyes focused on what we're doing and away from what's going on outside. I couldn't be happier to have had Mrs. Dixon as a teacher for two years of my high school career and know many other students who could say the same!

Mrs. Dixon is by far and above the most passionate teacher I have ever had. As a college graduate I look back on the time I spent in the classroom with Mrs. Dixon, and it is evident now how much she loves to teach and be a life changer to her students. You won’t find a teacher who will go above and beyond to make learning enjoyable the way Mrs. Dixon does. The great thing about Mrs. Dixon is that these things I have mentioned about her are simply who she is. She is a life changer if I have ever had one.

Mrs. Dixon was my very first teacher EVER. I'm glad I got to have her again in 6th grade, she is the best teacher to be nominated for this award.

Luke's.

Mrs. Dixon is so deserving of this award. I have been a student of Mrs. Dixon my freshman year and once again my senior year. As a current anatomy student, Mrs. Dixon has created an amazing environment to learn and for me to not be afraid to ask questions if I do not comprehend the material. For lessons that contain difficult material, Mrs. Dixon always provides a hands-on experience to help my classmates and me get a better understanding of the material. Mrs. Dixon always has the greatest stories and information to tell us for every lesson, my favorite being "the woman who died from drinking too much water". Mrs. Dixon is also always worried about the well-being of all her students. She pushes me to be the best I can be and helps to guide me in all the right ways.

Ever since my first high school science class, Mrs. Dixon has been there helping me. This is my second year having her. The first time was freshman year biology and now AP Biology my senior year. Even when I was in different science classes, Mrs. Dixon would still ask me questions and offer advice on the subject and life/college choices. Every St. Luke's high schooler knows that class without her is plain boring. She brings excitement and energy to the science class while helping her students fully grasp the material at hand. Mrs. Dixon is an essential part of St. Luke's. She has indeed been one of the most impactful teachers I've ever had.

Mrs. Dixon has taught me for three years, including 6th grade science, 9th grade biology, and this year as my anatomy and physiology teacher. Each year, I have learned not only about the subject, but also the best ways to study. Mrs. Dixon never makes you feel like your question is stupid, instead she tries to explain it in a different way, and will continue until you understand it. I have spent hours with her before and after school to get extra help, and she is always happily there to help. She makes learning fun, whether it is drawing diagrams on our tables with chalk markers, or making up dances to help us memorize a subject. I know that even after I graduate, I can still come to her for help. Mrs. Dixon is teacher that believes in you, even when you are doubting yourself, and has greatly impacted my life.

Mrs. Dixon has always been one of my favorite teachers since my freshman year in Biology. Biology is not my best subject in school, but I remember her always coming up to me and giving me extra explanation for me to understand the lesson more. I always appreciated her doing this, and that is what makes her stand out among any other teacher that I have had. Mrs. Dixon is also my Anatomy teacher this year, and she is one of the most interactive teachers that I have had. I learn better when I can be interactive with the lesson, and I can tell that Mrs. Dixon cares a lot about her students learning in the most effective way possible.

Mrs. Dixon embodies every student's perception of an ideal teacher. In my opinion, there are two key reasons for Mrs. Dixon's outstanding reputation as a teacher at my school: the passion which she possesses for teaching science as a whole and her ability to explain concepts in a multitude of ways so that she can best suit all of her students' needs. Upon entering Mrs. Dixon's classroom, students are met with a great amount of energy which they are unaccustomed to feeling in other classes. She goes above and beyond to make advanced lectures enjoyable for the class by creating activities (sometimes even dances) for students to engage in during certain class periods. Personally, science is a subject that I sometimes struggle with, but Mrs. Dixon's effort to explain certain processes or concepts in a way that I myself can understand has given me a solid understanding of all the information she has ever taught me. Mrs. Dixon cares equally for all of her students, and while she often pushes them, in the end, she wants nothing other than for them to succeed, and she will take on any means to help hard-working students do so.

I have known Mrs. Dixon and her family since I was a baby. I grew up with her and her family on Dauphin Island, Alabama, and she is the nicest and one of the most interesting people I have ever met. I finally had the chance to take her class in 9th grade with biology, and though I do not enjoy science very much, Mrs. Dixon made it a fun learning experience with mitosis flipbooks and many other fun projects. On account of my knowing her for such an extensive period of time, I and genuinely say that she has changed my life for the better.

Mrs. Dixon has been a part of my life ever since she became my pre-k 4 teacher at St. Lukes. Now that I am a senior, I have had the privilege of being in her sixth grade earth science class, her freshmen biology class, and her senior anatomy and physiology class. Mrs. Dixon has been a close family friend and an amazing teacher to me for almost my entire life. Even in the few years that I did not have her as a science teacher, I always knew that she was someone that would be there for me no matter what if I needed anything. She is by far one of the most caring and truly genuine people you will ever meet. She understands what it is like to be in a student’s shoes and does everything possible to help her students understand the curriculum to their best ability. If anyone is most deserving of this award, it would definitely be Mrs. Dixon. She is one of the greatest people and teachers you will ever meet. I am so excited for you Mrs. Dixon!! I love you!!

Mrs. Dixon was my 9th-grade biology teacher. I struggled understanding biology, and there were countless times when Mrs. Dixon would spend one-on-one time with me to help me understand the concept. I have not had Mrs. Dixon since 9th-grade, but every time I see her at school, she always talks to me and asks me how I am doing. Small things like that always brighten my day.

When I came to St. Luke’s my freshman year of high school, Mrs. Dixon was one of the first teachers I had that year. In her biology class, she made every student feel equally important which showed me that I made the right choice coming to St. Luke’s. I am thankful everyday for Mrs. Dixon. It is now my senior year and I am so glad I get to take her anatomy class this year. She always has the best attitude about teaching us, even on bad days. Her classes are so fun and she always keeps her students engaged with a multitude of hands on activities and labs. Mrs. Dixon deserves the best and made St. Luke’s feel like a home!!

I've known Mrs. Dixon for many years, but I first got to know her through Robotics, which I joined in seventh grade. I felt included in the class despite my young age and lack of experience, and I continued to assist the team as much as I could through her guidance in many a competition. As the years passed and I learned more through her 9th grade Biology class and through her leadership out of the classroom in the Robotics team, I continued to appreciate her help and support more and more. I always enjoy Mrs. Dixon's company whether in the classroom, teaching more than three different courses, or out of the classroom, and she always makes me smile and appreciate our teachers at St. Luke's and the hard work they put into teaching us. I'm incredibly thankful to call her my teacher and my friend.

I haven't known Mrs. Dixon for very long, seeing as she only taught me on year. However, I've said before and I'll say it again, her biology class was one of if not the most hands-on, fun, and informative classes I've ever had. I still see her in the hall and I make sure to always speak. She made the transition from another school much, much easier. I couldn't imagine having a different Biology teacher!

Mrs. Dixon is one of my favorite teachers at St. Luke's, she taught biology in 9th grade and now teaches anatomy in 12th. She always finds a way to make the classroom more energetic and make it exciting to learn the next chapter. She always acknowledges students when walking down the halls and never turns down a student that needs help with anything. she has been an extraordinary and very appreciated teacher to me at St. Luke's during my years here.

I have been fortunate enough to have known Mrs. Dixon my entire life. Mrs. Dixon's passion for science has helped me and countless other fall in love with the STEM programs. Since my first encounter with Mrs. Dixon as a freshman biology teacher, she was always excited to start a new lab and help students make connections and truly understand. This past year one of the main reasons I choose to take AP Biology was because I knew that Mrs. Dixon would be the teacher. I knew that with her as my teacher, I would never have to worry about being lost in a section, and if I did get lost, she would help me make the connection. Mrs. Dixon's love for science and her students has helped me form my love of the science field. I am eternally grateful for the contribution Mrs. Dixon has had to my life.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Dixon since I started St. Luke's. She never once has turned down a student for help, and always puts her students before herself. I have taken both biology and anatomy with her, and I could not have asked for a better teacher. Anytime she can, she will make us get up and do a dance or sing a song to help understand what we are learning, even if it is at 8 in the morning. My freshman year I struggled with finding a way to study, and Mrs. Dixon sat down with me and helped me find a way I would understand what we were learning. Mrs. Dixon is an amazing teacher, and I hope to have many more like her in the future!

Mrs. Dixon is an amazing instructor. That is evident from the first time you step into her classroom. This fact is clearly backed up by the sheer number of testimonies chorusing the same. However, the greatest thing that I have learned from Mrs. Dixon has not been in the classroom. Not the dive into the steps of mitosis or cellular respiration, nor the explanation of how DNA is replicated and transcripted into proteins. No, the thing that has left the greatest impact on me is the passion with which she undertakes her job. The amount of time that Mrs. Dixon pours into her students is unsurpassed, and the effort is consistently there. Whether it is learning how to service the Robotics Team's CNC machine, so we could cut our gears, or reaching out to colleagues who are experts (in one of the few fields she isn't) to give us another opportunity to hear another's experience. So yeah, the greatest thing I have learned from Mrs. Dixon is that I want a job that I can be as passionate about as she is every day about teaching.

Whether it was taking care of me when I was sick during our 6th grade field trip, or taking extra time to talk with me about my future, she was always there for me in and out of the classroom. I cannot say enough about Mrs. Dixon. Definitely one of the people I look up to and appreciate most.

She took over the BioMed program recently and has done a fantastic job, especially with trauma week. She even got the connections to bring in a medical helicopter in order to inform the students and show them all aspects of what the medical field may bring. She also leads robotics year-after-year with great success. She is a workaholic and does so much for St. Lukes students, school, and community.

Mrs. Dixon was only person I can count on to help me succeed on passing biology and to this day I still remembers everything what Mrs. Dixon taught me in Biology. Mrs. Dixon exhibits every quality a student could ever want in a teacher, and our school is blessed to have her. With her energetic teaching style, she insures that every one of her students both enjoy and learn from her classes. Along with this, she shows extraordinary levels of support and compassion for her students by devoting countless hours of her own time to insure each student develops a strong understanding of the subject. Throughout high school, I have been lucky enough to have Mrs. Dixon as a teacher on two different occasions: ninth grade and twelfth grade (this year). During my time in her classes, I have learned a tremendous amount about the science world, but I have also learned about life skills such as the benefits of hard work and preparation. After my wonderful time at St. Luke's draws to a close in May of next year, I may one day forget some of the academic knowledge Mrs. Dixon has taught me, but I will never forget the love and compassion she has shown me and every other student she has taught!

To the selection committee, Angie is an incredible teacher and genius to boot. She started teaching at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) in south Alabama during the mid 90's. Here she taught my wife during the Sea Lab's month long summer marine science course for high school students. My wife and I now work at the DISL in education in part due to Angie being a terrific educator. The Lab is amazing and Angie helped make it even more interesting with her love of invertebrates, that she instilled in these budding marine scientists over 20 years ago. Her impact on my life's trajectory cannot be understated. Now as a fellow educator who has taught Angie's classes on fields trips at DISL. I can see the respect she receives, the knowledge she shares, and love she shows her students. Angie pets the kids first whether it is robotics, Anatomy and Physiology, or any other prep she may be assigned. Angie does with aplomb. It is not shocking at all that she has been nominated for this prestigious award. I am now lucky enough to call Angie a friend as well. She is truly disserving of this honor, Sincerely, Greg

Mrs. Dixon is a fabulous teacher worthy of this award. Her scope is wide, and she makes tremendous impressions on her students. She is not only great with the upper school students, she was also a treasure with the little ones too. She gave two of my children an awesome start to their school years in K3. She was extremely creative and nurturing to her littles. Always the educator....Even when we’ve run into her years later on the beach at Dauphin Island (more than once) she took the kids to the water and “taught” them about the sea life around them. They loved it! Although my children were only there one year before they came to my school, we will never forget Mrs. Dixon. We look back at their K3 memory books often and remember all of the experiences they had that year. Mrs. Dixon is kind, caring, and passionate about her teaching. Her passion for teaching is so evident in the time and attention she gives to each student. She knows them by name (their parents and siblings too), their strengths, and the skills to teach them to nurture and guide them on their way to success. This recognition would be a wonderful way to acknowledge the magnitude of Angie's efforts.

Angie Dixon exceeds every criteria of a fabulous teacher in the classroom, but it’s the things she does that no one sees that makes her a life changer. First, she gets teenagers and their rebellious, scattered, and impulsive ways. She picks her battles and doesn’t react, but explains. The students trust her. They talk to her. They include her in their struggles because she is their rock. Next, if a student is struggling, Angie will stay at school until that student finishes up practice and leave our campus at 8:00 at night or she will meet a student at school at 6:30 in the morning to explain what they are struggling with. Yes, many teachers do this, but Angie lives an hour away from school. Her motto is “I’m here for you” and you will never hear her complain. Every one of her students are her world. Lastly, her compassion, energy, and love doesn’t end with the students. She is the unflappable, caring, and trustworthy co-worker and friend. She is a rock and she changes every life she touches.

Hello! I had the pleasure of having Mrs.Dixon as a science teacher throughout my middle school and high school years. She taught me Earth Science and Biology. I went on field trips with Mrs.Dixon to the Florida Keys and to the mountains in Tennessee in order to have a hands on science experience. I also had the opportunity to participate in the E.coil lab and work with mentors from the University of South Alabama. However, my most memorable experience from my time as Mrs.Dixon’s student is when my class was struggling to learn about faults, trenches, and mountains in earth science. At that time, a lot of us were into rap music. Mrs.Dixon helped us to create a rap song and dance to remember the different characteristics of each. To this day, I still remember the rap song and I have even performed it for some of my college peers and professors. Mrs. Dixon has forever made an impact on me not only through her wonder teaching abilities, but also through her kind heart. She teaches her students how to be the best people they can be. Because of Mrs. Dixon, I am pursing a degree in Middle Childhood Science Education in hopes that I can be half of the educator and person she is. She would amazing for this award!

Mrs. Angela Dixon is extremely deserving of this award. My children (now college students) have directly benefited from the teaching, love, and support from her. Even when rising private school costs made continuing at St.Luke’s difficult, we never considered changing schools because of the teachers like Mrs. Dixon and the learning environment she helped create. Both of my children were in several classes with Mrs. Dixon and were in the robotics program for years. They still sing the songs she taught in class and on the Appalachian Mountains field trip. She mentored both of them and encouraged them in leadership positions in the robotics team. The skills that they have learned and the confidence they have gained, both academic and leadership-wise through her classes and through robotics, have helped them immensely and are part of the reason they have been so successful. As a parent volunteer, I have spent many hours on the school campus and have witnessed first-hand the care, dedication, and love Mrs. Dixon has for her students. She is definitely one of our favorite teachers and is absolutely a life-changer for her students!

I was fortunate enough to sit in on Mrs. Dixon’s AP biology class when our school had the middle/high teachers cross evaluate the elementary teachers. What an amazing teacher! It was impressive to see the extent of the work the class was participating in. Not only was Angie teaching the curriculum, she was taking the time to stop and help, explain further, and make sure everyone understood; all signs of an excellent teacher. I am proud to say that my daughter is now in that class. She is also a second year BioMed student with Mrs Dixon. We will take any class that she offers as we feel that strongly about her as a teacher, co-worker, and friend!

I have been in her class for 2 years now and she is like family to me and like my school mom she would be the best candidate for this opportunity.

Mrs. Dixon is so deserving of this award. Not because of the teacher she is, but because of who she is outside of the classroom, too. This is my first year having her, and it’s my senior year. As Covid-19 has taken tolls on everyone this year and last, Mrs.Dixon was and still is the person I was able to go to. This year has been challenging for me, I lost my grandmother and I had to email and let her know all of the updates and each day at school while dealing with the news that my grandmother didn’t have much longer, she would take the time to ask if I was okay. I remember her telling me that she was there if she needed me, that she would be praying for me. This is what meant so much. The mere fact that she cared. Inside of the classroom, she has never once failed to get us up to dance for a lesson, do yoga, and even draw on tables. It may be little things that don’t mean much to the public, but to me, and to my classmates, these “little things” are everything. They keep us going. They are what keep us motivated. She has changed my life in so many ways, as a student and as a person. There aren’t enough words to describe how deserving she would be of this award.

I don’t know where to even start, Mrs. Dixon has been my teacher and instructor for about 4 years. She was my mentor for robotics for two years and then I had her as my biology teacher in 9th grade. As of now I am part of her biomed class. During are robotics season she was so devoted to the team and making sure we will succeed, even staying with us past 9 pm on some days. When I entered her biology class in 9th grade, I struggled a bit in her class because science was never my strong suit, but because of her dedication she made me a stronger student by coming before or after school to help me. I was never interested into going in the medical filed but because of her I took the biomedical class that our school offers. Everyday I always look forward to going to her class, because that she has exposed us to mine fields and career paths. Mrs. Dixon has made me a stronger student and has made me look at the science field in a different way. Thank you, Mrs. Dixon

I have known mrs. Dixon ever since I first came to the upper campus. She has been an amazing teacher and respects every single student. As a current biomed student, Mrs. Dixon has not only created an amazing environment, but she also has taught me and other students so much about saving someone’s life. She has been an outstanding role model for me, and an even better teacher.
