Jessica Gilbert was nominated by an anonymous colleague.

Ms. Gilbert started off the year as a second grade teacher, but graciously accepted the move to fourth grade when a vacancy opened up. She is a ray of sunshine on campus for every student whose life she touches. She leads an after-school tutoring group and is a New Teacher Ambassador. Every month, she supports new teachers and provides opportunities for them to engage so her school can improve our teacher retention.

"She is a wonderful teacher, and we are so lucky to have her on our campus," said her nominator.

I am a very fortunate Principal to have Jessica on my team. She truly changes lives through the relationships she builds with students, coworkers and families.

Ms. Gilbert has been a blessing to our school. Every morning when I see her she is always smiling. She was our teacher of the year this year too. She worked wonders with her second grade class last year, and this year when we had a teacher leave she graciously accepted to take that position even though it was in the middle of the year. Her second graders actively look for her for support. In fact, I often see her chatting with students in different grade levels and goi out of her way to help students that aren’t “hers.” She is also our New Teacher Ambassador. She works with our new teachers by answering questions, initiating meetings, and building relationships with them. She also presented with Ms. Gier and I on the zones of regulation which she actively uses in her classroom to help our students manage their emotions and behavior at school. I’m fortunate to work with her and so many of the other amazing teachers at our school.

My amazing daughter has wanted to be a teacher since she was in kindergarten. She graduated from FAMU with an elementary education degree in 2013. I remember how excited she was to finally be done with school. She had many obstacles, but she was determined to be an educator. She works hard at building relationships, going to games, concerts, and just showing her students that she loves them. I look forward to her calling me to share what happened each day with her students. She pours her heart and soul into helping teach her students.

A coworker just shared this nomination with me. I really appreciate being nominated. I love the school I work at. Stephens has amazing students, staff, and leadership. Honored to have the opportunity to take on extra responsibilities to improve our school.
