It gives me great pleasure to leave a comment for Kirsten Coughlin to be considered for The Life Changer of the Year in recognition of her outstanding leadership and guidance she provides to the students at Howard High School of Technology. Mrs. Coughlin provides our students with the tools and resources for them to pursue their future endeavors. In my role as a Student Advisor in the discipline office, I work very closely with Mrs. Coughlin; which has afforded me the opportunity to see her high level of professionalism and mindfulness when working with all our stakeholders. Mrs. Coughlin has an unbelievable way of conveying the important information to our entire school and their families about graduation requirements, scheduling, and national initiatives, in way that all parties understand the importance of the message and how it can positively impact their futures. Along with her unbelievable communication skills, Mrs. Coughlin has a heart of gold! Just like many schools across the country, we at Howard have faced tragedy with the deaths of a few students over the past couple years. These tragedies have affected our school and the community we serve tremendously. During the grieving periods after these tragedies, Mrs. Coughlin worked tirelessly to ensure our students and their families had the proper guidance to deal with grief. Mrs. Coughlin, also meant one on one with students and staff to support them with their grief. Without Mrs. Coughlin’s compassion and hands-on approach to help our students and faculty deal with these events, we as a school would not be able to continue to thrive and overcome these events. Mrs. Coughlin is so much more than just a Guidance Counselor! She is one of the most vital parts of our school’s body, she is the heart and soul! Her impact from the time the student comes to Howard in the 9th grade to when they walk across the graduation stage in May, leaves an impact that last for a lifetime with our students. Constantly, student’s come back to Howard to seek out her guidance when they have been gone from the school for years. That show how exceptional Mrs. Coughlin’s contribution has been in the lives of so many students she has worked with at Howard High School of Technology. Because of these efforts, Kirsten Coughlin has not only earned this nomination for The Life Changers of the Year award, but also the respect and gratitude of those for whom and with whom Mrs. Coughlin serves. As one of those peers whom Mrs. Coughlin has inspired and motivated, I strongly urge you to award Mrs. Coughlin with The Life Changer of the Year award.

Working with Kirsten is wonderful. Not only does she take her counselor duties seriously for the abundance of students that she oversees, but she finds time to go the extra mile to help anyone in need; staff, student or parent. In addition to being a guidance counselor, a college/career readiness coach, and parent/teacher/student advocate, Kirsten adds the personal touch by getting involved, offering a smile when it is needed, caring (even about the small stuff), or lending a helping hand with a project/item someone might be struggling with. Kirsten does all of this efficiently and effectively while also raising a family and educating herself professionally about the ever-changing needs of our student body. She is my go-to person when I have a guidance question/concern. Kirsten makes my job as an educator easier in many ways and she always does it with a smile on her face! Thanks!
