Music that Describes Jordan
Jordan Hernandez was nominated by a student, Pedro Cleto.
"Mr. Hernandez won the 2020 Teacher of the Year AND Coach of the Year at our school this year," said Cleto. "Mr. H has been my mentor since I moved to the United States from Brazil a few years ago. This teacher created an initiative called the 'Welcome Committee,' which aims to meet transfer students like me and/or immigrants on the first day that we enter school. New students are met by Mr H and a student leader with a welcome packet explaining the school culture and clubs to get involved in. They even had a welcome lunch for new students. This initiative has helped students feel like they belong right at the early stage of first walking on our campus.
Mr. Hernandez is more than an English teacher. He runs a non-profit called “We Dine Together” that has received national attention for the organization’s mission: to minimize social isolation by inviting students who sit alone or are new to the school to a free lunch in Mr. H’s classroom.
"I have been the student president of this organization, and I have watched students who have been bullied, ostracized, or new to the school walk into our meetings to listen to our group discussions and walk out of the room feeling more connected and encouraged," said Cleto. "My friends and I have been impacted from Mr. H’s teacher & student-led presentations on mitigating mental health issues, understanding trauma, and how to start living a better life on and off campus. Our club started with 50 members and now has just under 300 student members on campus. It is overwhelming. We continue to plant clubs by the week on other campuses in our county and across the country."
Mr. Hernandez was featured on Facebook & Instagram Live's Graduation 2020 (with Oprah Winfrey as a keynote speaker) for an initiative he started called “#CoronaCant." This was a website and social media platform that connected students, teachers, and families during quarantine. This initiative still happens today with virtual teaching.
Mr. H runs a podcast and series of videos called “Motivational Mondays” that is getting strong traction on campus and in the community. These initiatives are just a few of the innovative things Mr. Hernandez has done to connect students, teachers, and families in his 3,400 person school.
"Many of my Brazilian and Colombian friends actually call this man 'Tio,' which means 'uncle,'" said Cleto. "In Latin America, students only do this for teachers who we see as family. Mr. H helps us by translating for our parents and connecting us with college advisors. He even had an immigration attorney come meet with 60 of us pro bono!"
"Mr. H and I keynoted the Palm Beach County Mental Health Conference last year, where we spoke on 'We Dine Together' and other initiatives like our positive behavioral support systems that we incorporate on campus," said Cleto. "Also, we were invited to Manhattanville College in November of 2019 to share our curriculum and programs to college students and administrators to help better their local schools."
"I knew that Mr. Hernandez was a LifeChanger when our school district had him lead school-wide assemblies at two of our county’s largest high schools last year," said Cleto. "Mr. H and trained mental health professionals spoke on emotional intelligence, mitigating anxiety, and resiliency. I do not say this lightly when I say that this teacher and leader has changed the lives of thousands on our campus, in our county, and across the country from all that he has been able to do. Our families and I are living a better life because of Jordan Hernandez. I wish we had more of him… we all would be better off."
