Thank you for all you have done and for the influence you have had in my daughter's, Heather's life. She is a fighter for you, because of your influence in her life back in high school. Again I want to say Thank you.

Marshonn S Calvin, Sr. Posted 1 months ago

It has truly been my honor to serve the students at Millington Central High School. When I started the broadcasting program I had no idea that I would make such a difference in the lives of the students I would teach. God gave me an opportunity to help students who grew up as I did in a single-parent household without a father being present in our household. In the 17 years that I have taught here at MCHS, I have been able to heal from the hurts I had as a child growing up without my father being present in my life and the way I healed was by teaching young men and young women how to care for themselves, how to cherish the lessons learned from mistakes and how to realize that their lives matter. The love that I had for the students I mentor will never fade away because I believe that each and every one of the students has played a major role in building The MCHS Broadcasting Program and The Trojan TV Show. The relationships that I have built with the young men and women at MCHS will last a lifetime and I am proud to call the students my extended family. I thought I was leaving WMC Action News 5 to create a new broadcasting program and a news program but what God has blessed me with in the mentorship of my students has truly been a blessing from the good Lord himself. When you look back on your life and see all of the blessings you have been given and you see how far God has brought you on this journey called "LIFE" you have to be able to say Job Well Done! I truly thank you all for your kind words and this amazing opportunity to showcase the work that I have been able to do at Millington Central High School. https://drive.google.com/file/d/13_HDxyzxOzLuRkfgrSEO-fIezLjgi1ax/view?usp=sharing https://www.daily-journal.com/news/local/kankakee-native-creates-successful-broadcasting-career/article_270251c4-80ee-11eb-9751-ab26a03c5169.html http://www.millington-news.com/?p=9906 Kindest Regards, Marshonn S. Alan Copeland thank you sir for your kind and thoughtful words. It is truly a blessing to work with young people who want to learn life skills and my craft of Broadcast Journalism, Video Production and Filmmaking. When you do the work that you love you never feel like it is a job but it is your passion. God gets all of the glory in this situation because if it wasn’t for him pushing me to give back to my community I would still be working in the media industry if God didn’t show me a new path. He pushed me to try something new that would end up being some of my greatest work that I have done. I am so thankful for the opportunity I have been given to help serve the young men and women in the communities Millington, Tennessee. Thank you and everyone who has left a message regarding me and years of service at MCHS. Kindest Regards, Marshonn S. Calvin, Sr.

Larry Behl yes sir my grandfather Alfred Calvin use to work at Gould Battery in the 1970’s and for the city of Kankakee, Illinois in the 1980-1990’s. He is the man who made me who I am today. My grandfather sadly passed away in 2010 but he made sure that I made something out of myself during my lifetime. I always do everything in my professional and personal life in my grandfather’s honor. I try my very best to serve my community in Memphis the same way granddaddy did back home in Kankakee.

I have two grandsons that attend Millington High School. Both grandsons have been in Mr. Calvin’s broadcasting class. At home they are sharing with me only good and positive things regarding class and how that Mr. Calvin is always encouraging them to strive higher. I can tell, by listening to my grandsons that Mr. Calvin is an excellent teacher, motivator, role model, and a wonderful man. I’m really amazed at how he allows them to film the games, and also trust them with the handling of the filming equipment. Allowing them to be responsible, accountable and dependable. I’ve never personally met Mr. Calvin, but my grandsons really respect and admire him greatly. We are really blessed and fortunate to have Mr. Calvin to share his expertise, knowledge, patience, and time with our kids. I just want to thank him for being a role model, father figure, caring not only for my grandsons by other youth in the school. Joe Allen Posted 3 months ago

I find myself at 28 often reflecting on unique methods of reaching youth, then I notice I’m constantly watching old episodes of Trojan TV. If anyone ever watched an episode you can understand why: comfort zones don’t exist, failure is not an option, art has many forms and faces, and you will not waste your time or his. And I find myself utilizing these techniques and ideologies in everyday life. Plus to see so many former classmates in industries not too inviting where we come from; Calvin is way more than a teacher, he is an inspiration and a trailblazer

Marshonn Calvin Posted 3 months ago

I truly appreciate your support, your words of encouragement and your amazing friendship????. May God continue to bless each and everyone of you who posted a message regarding me and my broadcasting students. It is a blessing to be a mentor to the leaders of tomorrow. James Offlee Posted 3 months ago

I would not be where I am today and I wouldn’t have as much insight on life without Mr Calvin. He’s been a great mentor for me personally, just seeing him give his all when he didn’t have to. They don’t require teachers to be as involved in what students have going on outside of the classroom but Mr Calvin always looked out for me and made sure I was being the best me I could be. I honestly can’t thank him enough. He inspires so many students and I’ve seen it firsthand, so it’s no question who I think should be the Lifechanger Of The Year. He really should get it every year that’s how hard he goes for his students. Again hats off to Mr Calvin for sticking around and being the positive reinforcement some kids need(Ed) in their lives including myself.

Having worked with Mr. Calvin for more than 15 years at Millington High School, I have been able to see him make a difference in the lives of many of our students. Some of the students who got their start on "Trojan TV" now appear on our nightly news. What may not be as obvious though are those students who were headed down a dark or troubled path and changed direction after studying under him. Mr. Calvin is a man who truly cares about his students, and is one of those rare few teachers of whom it can be said that the priceless wisdom gained by his students about life from having taken his class quite possibly surpasses the value of academic knowledge gained therein.

Candice Armstrong Posted 3 months ago

Mr. Calvin is always helping others and well deserving of this great honor!

Doris J. O'Connor Posted 3 months ago

I was Marshonn Calvin's first grade teacher in 1983. I totally enjoyed working with him and his mom all those years ago. I remember telling his mom that he would become an accomplished individual, maybe a politician, and I couldn't wait to see what he would do with his life. I feel that my prediction about the then 6 year Marshonn has come true. Few people are as committed to teaching as Marshonn is. He developed his broadcasting program from scratch at Millington High School, which was no small feat for a new teacher.. He cares about his students like they were his own children. He "meets them where they are" academically and emotionally. Marshonn doesn't just teach the technicalities of broadcasting; he teaches life skills using the subject of broadcasting. His encouragement helps his students to understand that a goal is a dream with a timeline to be accomplished with hard work. Through excellent teaching and mentoring, his students leave his program with a better sense of self-determination and self-confidence. Like Booker T. Washington, he helps his students "lift the veil" of their fears and limitations. Under his guidance they learn the sweet taste of success that comes with pushing themselves to achieve something that they may not think they can do. In this way, he truly is a life changer. He equips them with better communication and problem solving skills that will help them cope with the fast paced world we live in now. The best description of Marshonn's teaching comes from a quote by the baseball great, Reggie Jackson. Reggie played baseball from 1967-1987. The easiest way to sum up his impressive career is this: he played in 15 All Star games and was named MVP for 11 of those games. I've always thought that his quote about what makes a great manager, also described what great teachers should be. "A great manager (teacher) has a knack for making you think you're better than you think you are. He forces you to have a good opinion of yourself. He lets you believe in You! He makes you get more out of yourself and once you learn how good you really are, you never settle for doing anything but your very best." Not only is Marshonn an outstanding teacher but he is a devoted family man to his immediate and extended family. His church and community are also beneficiaries of his talents. Marshonn gives his all to all who cross his path and that is why he should be designated a "Life Changer!"

Marshonn Calvin is my oldest child and only son! He’s been my motivation since his birth! He’s a God fearing man who is a loving devoted son, grandson, brother, uncle, friend and teacher. He’s a very dedicated teacher who loves his Broadcasting Program and his students. Marshonn left his hob working in television to become a teacher because he wanted to help younger people and share his knowledge. He had a vision when he started his program and he accomplished it. He’s not only a teacher but also a mentor, motivator and a father figure to most. He spends long hours with his students because he wants the best for them. Marshonn is always trying to make sure his students have the best experience possible while attending his classes. He’s always trying to make sure they have the proper equipment, he takes them on tours and visits places that will inspire them, he also will help the students with getting interviews with many well known individuals. While in his class he mentors and pushes the students out of their comfort zones to show them that anything is possible if you’re dedicated and willing to try. He’s always available to his students no matter what time of the day or night or whatever the reason may be. Once his students have graduated from MIllington Central High they all know they can always call on Mr. Calvin and he will be there. Many of his students have been very successful after graduating from MIllington. I feel he’s very deserving of the LIfeChanger of the Year Award because he’s changing lives daily. Marshonn keep on Blessing others with what God has Blessed you with!

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you who has left a message on the National Life Group's Life Changer of Year Nominee page. To be able to be nominated for this prestigious award is a real blessing. To have someone say you changed their lives is a power statement. To know that my family my wife Tamela Woods-Calvin to nominate me and my mother Joyce Calvin-Harmon to express how much I did to help the students I've taught have been amazing to see and hear but to hear my students say it out of their own mouths has really touched my heart. I didn't know when I left WMC Action News 5 (WMC TV-5) that I would build a broadcasting program that has created a family environment like we had a Channel 5. I also didn't know that my students would remain loyal to me and the broadcasting program all of these 17 years and for that, I am forever grateful. Teaching at one school Millington Central High School for 17 years has been life-changing for me because of what the students and I are able to create every week with The Trojan TV Show and I amazed at how creative and how talented they are. My students are never Pigeon held I let them know that they can be anything that God wants for them. I am able to help their self-esteem and lead them to become something amazing and for that, I am thankful to my administration, the parents, and my own family (my wife Tamela, kids Marshonn, Micah and Matthew, and my mother Joyce) for allowing me to do God's will in helping every child that comes through my door. My wife Tamela and my mentors Lamont Matthews (Shadow), Carl Dillard, Kym Clark, Joe Birch, Jr. Dave Brown, Jarvis Greer, and Ron Childers have played significant roles in the development of my students learning always allowing for station tours, doing interviews, highlighting the work my students did in competitions, and just being mentors to my future journalist and filmmakers. God is so amazing he took a kid like me from Kankakee, Illinois and sent me to school for broadcast journalism, gave me internships with NBC at 30 Rockefeller Plaza which changed my life, gave me a host of opportunities to perfect my craft in video production, give me mentors who would show me the ropes of our field and help me become a mentor as I created a broadcasting program for the next journalist, filmmakers, and CEO's of the next generation. WOW! I know God has forever changed my life and put me on a path of greatness. He kept me from joining gangs, from using drugs, and gave me a desire to become a mentor to children who grew up as I did in a single-parent household helping my mother raise my siblings. I am determined to make a difference in my lifetime and I thank God for the ability to be a good son, husband, father, and mentor Thank you all for your love and support! Marshonn Calvin

He may not have the best equipment but he makes the best of it and produces great content and his students learn so much and sees the passion he has for their success in his program. He is a man of god and lord knows what he have in store for him! Mr. Calvin is the person we all look up too and want to become just as great as him one day.

Charlotte T Smith Posted 4 months ago

I have two words that describe Mr. Marshonn Calvin, heart and compassion. As a former teacher, I know every student learns at a different pace. Teachers are devoted to making sure each one is learning and understanding. Mr. Calvin doesn’t accept failure and tries every angle and strategy to help his students learn and succeed. He gladly celebrates students accomplishments and although he may have some students for short periods of time, he beams with pride to see them succeed and move on. He considers both failure and success as a learning experience and teachable moment. Mr. Marshonn Calvin is a mentor, life coach, supporter, father figure, and even friend to his students. He interacts with his students during the school day and beyond to expose them to situations, places, and people to keep them interested and invested in broadcasting. On a personal note, Mr. Calvin’s students recorded and interviewed alumni during my school’s weekend centennial celebrations in 2013. His students were so impressive, poised, and professional-you would have thought they worked for a local tv station. I also witnessed when one of these student’s mother was terminally ill in the hospital, and I went to support this student. Mr. Calvin and the students were all there. Mr. Calvin had brought food and sodas for all the students. He remained with this young man until his mother passed, attended the funeral, and ensured he would be taken care of by other relatives. Mr. Marshonn Calvin has a heart of gold filled with compassion, kindness, and genuine love for his family, students, profession, and life. He provides a solid foundation for his students that require him to invest a lot of his time to help them fulfill and achieve a successful future.

DeMill Dixon Posted 4 months ago

Since our undergrad days at Rust College and as a fellow educator, Marshonn has has known and carved his path in mass communications. He has used it as a tool to educate, inform and entertain while using real world scenarios to engage his students (camera operation, editing, speech dialogue etc). Like the rapper KRS ONE says in his songs you can teach and entertain the people and call it "Edutainment"
