Amy Cunningham was nominated by her colleague, Colleen Lagoueyte.
Every now and then, we hear about teachers like Mrs. Cunningham. She is the amazing one; the teacher who, while on vacation, shops for clothes for students in need. The teacher who encourages and inspires those students that other teachers give up on. She's the one teacher who reaches so deeply down into the soul of her students that she pulls out creativity, brilliance, and grit. Her students write poetry and stories that they never imagined they could write. With her kind and loving support, her students find out that they are amazing, too.
On any given day, you can walk down the halls of Ware County High School, and there is Mrs. Cunningham casting a glow of love and encouragement. Her commitment to producing a nurturing environment is beyond the general definition of a positive school culture. In fact, she believes her school is one big family to love. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and everyone leaves her presence in a better light.
Research tells us that building relationships and valuing diversity and identity creates an environment where students are motivated to be successful. Mrs. Cunningham goes beyond that. Through her leadership, she initiated and coordinated an annual poetry night, Coffee House, an evening for all students to share their original works of song, story, and poetry. She allows her students buy-in and delegates tasks to them to make the entire evening magical. They go all out for her. They string lights and set tables with decorations. The students find all the resources and make it happen. They get to walk away from the event feeling valued, like they were a part of something special. It's an amazing affair of fun, food, and fellowship that fills the room to capacity. By design, it's a way that typical students can showcase their talents and meet like-minded friends.
Mrs. Cunningham will retire this year. She leaves a superior record of student performance on standardized assessments, creative writing, and language arts. She creates an environment that motivates her students to be successful. Her high morals and ethical standards are a model for teachers and students.
"It has been an honor to be her colleague, and she will be greatly missed by all at Ware County High," said Lagoueyte. "There is no replacement for Mrs. Cunningham. There is only one amazing one."
Mrs. Cunningham was a life changer for me and many others who thought we couldn't find our chosen paths in life. Her ability to care for students is unconditional. Loved studying under her guidance. She made lunging fun! Her profession was chosen for her!
I was brought to happy tears again this a.m., as I read from my PRECIOUS students, treasured friends and coworkers! If we were to win this LifeChanger award, it would be simply wonderful--for me, for this area. Who knows, I might get a bulletin board and put some of those "Mrs. C Quote Requests"? (I know some of you remember that CC Glover and I sat in a t-shirt shop for HOURS to get EVERY quote onto that T/Sweatshirt. . .you remember, the one with font so small we couldn't read it without a magnifying glass, but Clint and The Boys said, "Now every quote has go to be on there now!" And they were. . .and they were!
I think times like this are so important because I didn't have to die to get these wonderful things said. Maybe therein is the lesson. . . .tell folks what you want them to know while they are actually around to hear it. It does not have to be easy to say. . .or hard. . .but get it said.
Thank you. . .truly! Spread the word, y'all! Let's BRING THE GLORY HOME TO THE SWAMP!
You make me so very proud to be A GATOR. . .and now A BULLDAWG!
Amy (McCall) Cunningham
Mrs. Cunningham was a lifechanger for me. She was caring and fun. There isn't many people that made the mark she did on me. I met the mother of my children in her class. She supported me through a lot of my juvenile troubles. I really don't know what all to say, she was a role model, Inspiring, and a friend. She made you not want her class to end and made you to come back everyday. She was teacher over 20 years ago and remember it like yesterday.
Simply put, Mrs. Amy Cunningham remains one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is in large part the reason I am a teacher today. Her encouragement, generosity, and authenticity in the classroom made a lasting impression on me, and I strive to model those things for my own students.
I wrote my first sonnet in her class. We had just learned the rules of sonnets, so she had everyone write their own. I finished mine that class period, and she was incredulous. She was full of praise and questions about my poem (which I’m sure I would cringe at today). Her encouragement, however, made me feel like I could be the next great poet.
Another example comes from a unique assignment, the origins of which I can’t remember. I believe a group of us were tasked with creating a video based on a short story. We chose our roles and probably came up with a loose script on the fly. I had never thought about acting in anything, and what we did surely cannot be classified as acting. We were just having fun. We completed the video and were excited to play it for the class. I will never forget when Mrs. Cunningham singled out a moment when I went off script and improvised a few lines that I thought my character would have said. She said it was brilliant, and I felt like I could be the next great actor.
I’m not a poet or an actor. But that was never the point. Mrs. Cunningham made me feel like I could be either one. She made me feel like I could be anything I wanted. So I became a teacher who tries to teach like her.
I was Mrs. Amy’s student over 20 years ago. She was always the sweetest teacher with the most positive & upbeat attitude. Learning wasn’t an obligation in her classroom; instead, you wanted to learn!! She had a way of reeling you right in! I’ll never forget the impact you had in my life. I’m certain you’re so contagious that you cause other peers to be better as well. To this day, I still use your saying, “Cool beans!” You are the most deserving of this award as you go above & beyond everyday to help others. So ecstatic to know you’ve made an impact in my niece’s life (Haley G.) & can in my nephews life (Haden G.). You’re truly a special person!!
Mrs. Cunningham helped my friend Heather during her years at ware county high. Not only did she recognize Heather for her brilliance but gave her moral support and guidance through those tough times in her life. She always spoke about how she changed her life and lifted her spirits when life seemed so bleak, I've never heard of A teacher spike so highly of. She still leaves an impact on Heather's life even 15 years later she talks about how much Mrs. Cunningham supported her and how she wouldn't have made it through high school without her.
I really don't know where to begin or even put into words how inspiring and special this human is. When I was made to feel invisible by my while peers, she made me feel like I was somebody. She made sure I knew I was one of a kind, she made sure her students left her class feeling safe and most of all, HAPPY. She was absolutely the best teacher and role model I've ever had and God knew what He was doing when He put me in her class because LORD knows she came when I needed her the most. She made the BIGGEST impact on my life. She molded me into the woman I am now and not a day goes by that I don't think of this precious woman even after 10 years. She deserves the world and more. I LOVE YOU Mrs. Cunningham
Mrs.Cunningham was the most genuine, wholesome teacher. She made learning fun and never failed to bring a smile to everyone’s face. She’s the best!!
I loved it when she gave out the little dum dum suckers and smarty candys and told her students they weren't dumb they were all smart.
Mrs. Cunningham (Ms. McCall) was one of my most favorite teachers of all. She was caring and kind. She made us want to go to school. We knew that she truly loved us and wanted what was best for us. The class of 1998 will forever be grateful for her!
What a great teacher! It was great working with her. She was such an inspiration to the kids she worked with!
first let me say, it is indeed an honor and a pleasure to submit why I know my dear friend, Mrs. Amy Cunningham is deserving of the Life Changer of the year. award, She has definitely change my life for the rest of my life. Mrs. Cunningham (Amy) and I go way back !973-1986 classmates. We grew up in a very small community were everybody knew everybody. I remember this curly red head little girl with a contagious smile. Mrs. Cunningham was always very friendly and willing to help others,
I remember we both tried out for the Junior high basketball team. We made it! okay there were only five of us so of course we made it. We would have to play the whole time because there was no one to give us a break, I remember Mrs. Cunningham encouraging us to hang in there that were doing good, We were doing good? We were only 30+ points behind, but Mrs. Cunningham made us feel like we were winning the game. Finally, it was over and Mrs. Cunningham would hug us and say we did good she would be so excited. At first, I was so confused by her actions, but then I realized she had pushed and encouraged us so we wouldn't give up. I remember how the opposing team would compliment us on playing to the end, Mrs. Cunningham would be so proud to hear them say that and reminded us that we didn't give up. We press on and eventually made the varsity team..thank God!
Mrs. Cunningham and I would often after practice have our personal side conversation about life and things going on around us. I don't know who looked forward to it more her or me? I was just so happy to have a confidant that would actually hear me and not judge anyting I said. unfortuntely, time was not long enough and one of our parents would come to pick us up.
I remember Mrs. Cunningham was a good listener and easy to talk to, her concern was always genuine,
Mrs. Cunningham was always competing in some academic event pushing herself to higher levels of learning and excelling in everything I remember Mrs. Cunningham was always very modest and showed great humility when it came to her academics. She has never had a bragging spirit about herself. Always willing to help others and loved on everything she was around. She went on to graduate Salutatorian a well deserved honor her hard work paid off.
Mrs. Cunningham by nature is a hard worker with a never give up spirit. It was no surprise that She would become an educator. Mrs. Cunningham loves learning and sharing her knowledge with others. she has a powerful gift and takes it serious. A parent should feel so bless to have a child in her class, because she will invest everything that she can in that child whether academically, emotional or financially. Mrs. Cunningham loves being an educator and the students she serves. Her never give up spirit becomes contagious and the student finds themselves running the race to the end with Mrs. Cunningham by their side.
I am so honored after all these years to call Mrs. Cunningham(Amy) my friend. We share a genuine friendship that has stood the test of time. we have a mutual respects and love for each other. After reading some of the comments from her colleagues, students and former students its apparent that she has changed their lives for the rest of their lives too. What a joy and gift to have someone so selfless of their time and passionate about education and sharing with others her own life lessons. In the midst of these perils times Mrs. Cunningham is definitely a welcome breath of fresh air. Shes's the calm in the storm that is there to assure every student that if you don;t give up you will win.
m
As is reflected in all of these comments, and whether you knew her as Ms. McCall or Mrs. Cunningham, she is definitely in that special league of "the best people you'll ever meet". She was always encouraging, supportive, reliable, and had a smile on her face. If you ever wanted to talk about something, she was always available and actually tuned in. She often had a group of teenage students hanging around after class, which is an amazing feat in itself to get teenagers to stay in school any longer than absolutely necessary. Her class itself was always engaging and interactive, and inspired me to start writing my own poetry. It's difficult to put into words all of the ways that she had a positive impact on my life and others, but there are countless. You'll be hard pressed to find someone more deserving of this award. Mrs. Cunningham, thank you for all of the love, hard work, and dedication you gave over the years!
You are 1 of my 2 favorite teachers ever. If had not been for your class I wouldn't have 4 of my grown kids. I miss seeing on your walks be my kids house. You definitely are a positive Impact on my life.
bruh she is now my waycross middle school teacher and my favorite and her hair is not orange anymore. age am i right
2021 tue, nov 16. i'm in her class right now while she's talking about all the now grown ups that she had.
I thank you for everything love you mrs.C.
the best english teacher in the world!!!!!!!!
This unbelievable teacher right here made a huge impact on my life! Its been almost 20 years since I was in her class, but has been the only teacher in my life that I still stay in touch with. She has a passion for making learning fun and outside the box. Her class in High School is still one that I remember to this day and really helped shape my future by helping me find what I was passionate about and making plans to make moves towards a future goal. Mrs. Cunningham I cannot say thank you enough for all the countless hours you put in not just for my class, but for the hundreds before and after me. You deserve this award above and beyond and if for some crazy reason you don't win, we will be throwing our own party because you are the Life Changer for me! Thanks again for all your love and support!
Mrs. Cunningham is newly retired and has started part time at Waycross Middle School where I am the school nurse. She has the most amazing energy that is contagious! Did I mention she is RETIRED!!!! How many retired teachers do you know who still has the enthusiasm for teaching that they had when they first started. We love having her here with us!
Miss McCall !!!!!!( that’s what we called you when I was in high school) I still have my Sense Book and all my papers from my class. I value them so much now , I love you ??
From Ms. McCall (the best Lit teacher ever) to Ms. Cunningham (a wonderful co-worker)….THANK YOU! You brighten any room you enter, touch the hearts of everyone you cross paths with, and leave a lasting memory with everyone. I am so thankful that I had the chance to walk into your Lit class and be one of the many students you touched! When you search the meaning of Life Changer you find that it is having a STRONG effect on someone's life....You impacted the lives of so many and there are just not enough words to describe what a true Life Changer that you truly are! Thank you for being a Light in the life of many Gators throughout the years! You are truly one in a million! Much love!
Without a doubt, Amy McCall Cunningham (aka “Big Red”), was one of the most influential people in my life. As a child, I had her as a summer enrichment teacher at a program in our county (anyone remember Confetti?). I remember wishing that I had the opportunity to have her as a “real” teacher when I was in high school. As luck would have it, I ended up in her classroom. Sure, she was a great English teacher, but the lessons we learned from her were much deeper than that. She not only harped on us about being kind, she was an amazing example of a kind person. She always saw the best in her students, even those who were sometimes hard to love. Mrs. Cunningham had a great impact on my decision to become an educator because I wanted to have a rapport and relationship with those same students. She will never know just how many lives she impacted during her tenure at WCHS. She is one in a million and deserves accolades for being an amazing human.
I met Amy Cunningham (McCall) back in the day during 1993 school year when Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps (JROTC) was introduced to Ware County. I had just retired from the Army after 21 years of active duty service and decide to start a second career in education. Amy welcomed me the lost new rookie teacher and gave me the quick guide tour on what I needed to pay attention to, introduced me to a few faculty and of course the copy machine. Amy was excited about the JROTC program as well as the students and just like that we became partners in taking care of students and the challenges I was about to face. I met someone that took teaching the extra mile. It was not just about what was in the books it was also what the students were about individually.
Amy demonstrated people skills that cannot be taught. Amy connects in a way that makes you forget the negative and encouraged students to capitalize on the good. She can inspire students to dig deep in their souls and bring out their hidden talents they did not even know they had that would help them solve problems that would later help them get ahead in life. We sat many times in my office to discuss problems of students we shared in class and together we found ways to encourage those that were having a hard time outside the classroom. Some days were difficult but there was always the hope that the next day was going to be better. I am so thankful for her voice of inspiration and encouragement we are all better for it.
Through it all many years have gone by. It's been an honor and privilege knowing and working with Amy Cunningham. She is deserving of the life changer of the year award because of her passion and teaching talent making a difference in the lives of so many students and staff. May God continue to bless you abundantly, you will be truly missed!
I met Amy Cunningham in 1993 when I joined the staff at Ware County High School. This was after 21 years of service in the military. Amy took me under her wing and with her leadership, I learned how to deal with students and the many problems they brought into the classroom environment. Together we solved many problems, and changed many lives, including my own. She demonstrated to me and others around her the calmness and patience it took to reach successful outcomes. I am sure that there are many deserving teachers nominated for this award but Amy has been a great investment. I personally believe that she is the most deserving of the "Life Changer of the Year" award and I am delighted to add all of my endorsement to her nomination.
Mrs. Cunningham was one of the best teachers that any student could ask for. She would always push me past my limits because she knew that I had it in me to be great. She helped me with every year in school and I could go to her about anything and she would know what to say every time. I have never seen Mrs. Cunningham upset; she always had a smile on her face.Mrs. Cunningham is truly an angel sent from above.
Congrats on retirement and your nomination! I'm so happy for you! Thank you for both the English and life lessons you taught us! Happy retirement!
Class of 95. I had you in 10th grade English. You were my rock that year, giving me so much love and support just when I needed it, and the strength to keep going. You made a huge difference in my life, along with SFC Ramos in 11-12th grades. I know you touched every one of your students in a way that made them feel better about themselves, like you did with me. Congratulations on your nomination. You most certainly deserve it.
Amy Cunningham is not only one of the hardest working teachers I ever knew, but as a former educator, I know the difference in teaching and changing lives. Amy is a life changer. Her students may not have wanted to be exposed to their required reading or write papers, but she had a way of enlightening and enriching their lives. Students loved her. They were eager to support causes she frequently organized for students who were experiencing tragedies or experiences various illnesses. Amy never had children, but she was a true mother figure to thousands of teens. No doubt parents, her co-workers, and administrators will hate to see her retire.
Amy Cunningham was / is an extraordinary teacher and a fantastic friend. My children were privileged to have had Mrs. Cunningham as their English teacher.
I'm not sure how I can leave a "little note" for someone who has impacted my life in the way Amy has. From the moment I walked into her 10th Grade Lit class until today, she was and is someone that I not only consider a mentor, but also a friend.
I knew, like viscerally knew, that walking into that classroom that day wouldn't be an easy journey. I had yet to be taught by someone who was that "real". Like most folks who are between the ages of 14-18, I was in that space of what the hell am I doing and who the hell am I? I thought I may not leave that semester with definitive answers, but I knew that I would start a process that to this day still isn't complete. A process in which I don't want to find the answers, not yet, anyway. Maybe the day I draw the last molecule of oxygen from this planet, I will be satisfied with the answers.
Life has these ways of honing us into who we are suppose to be. Amy has had her fair share of honing. As a small girl in Alabama who had to deal with a life that any little girl should not have to deal with, Amy started becoming the inspirational woman that she is today. Only when I walked into that classroom and her heard voice, not just her dialect and accent, but HER voice, did I understand the concept of "things happening for a reason". Our encounter was not an accident, it was not happenstance. Someone much bigger than she or I made that meeting happen that day. And that I am eternally grateful for.
I learned from Amy that I could express myself with a pen and piece of paper. I could articulate experiences in a way that I had no idea that I had the ability to do. I learned that what I had to say mattered. Maybe not to the masses, but there was this redhead in a classroom in South Georgia that wanted to hear ME.
And almost 30 years later, she still wants to hear me, and vice-versa.
Our friendship has had many milestones. Amy wore my wedding dress to marry Scott. She and my oldest son, James have the same birthday. She and my oldest son Noah have the same hair, and many times, the same attitude.
Perhaps one of the biggest gifts I have ever received from anyone is the gift of being allowed to carry on Amy's legacy of Poetry Coffee House. This gift has allowed me to be the one standing in a classroom when a random kid walks in and realizes that they too have been heard for the first time.
As I said earlier, I'm not sure as how to have done this with a few words. My hesitancy to stop now is overwhelming. I don't think these words have been enough...
Amy Cunningham, thank you.
Thank you for loving children like they were your own! It take a wonderful person to give so unselfishly. Good luck and best wishes!
Never had one of her classes but I was a member of the FCA leadership team and was able interact with mrs Cunningham she was always smiling and always doing everything she could to make sure everyone smiled when I graduated in 2010 she was the most popular teacher in ware county high
Congrats Mrs.Amy McCall Cunningham..One of the most supportive, inspiring, knowledgeable teachers whom I had the privilege to be taught by..When I wanted to give up,you inspired me to press on..you made learning easier than most, and I must say,you always had a way to make a frown turn upside down..again congrats
Thanks You Are One The Main Reason I Graduated...I Always Wondered Who Mrs Cunningham Was...Now I Know You Was Ms Mc Call Back Then ..The Kids Always Speak High Of You Thanks Yo Boy Big Shanks...Enjoy Your Retirement
I know today must be really bitter sweet for you. It's your last, last day of school. You have touched so many lives with your bright, beautiful smile and your infectious personality. There have been thirty years of students whose lives you have had the opportunity to speak life into. You are not retiring from a job or career, you, my friend have finished well, a ministry that God allowed you to serve in. Dusty and I will forever remember "The Ms. McCall", (not the one who would fight you for her crayons...lol) the one who loved to read and write and so desperately tried to make us love it too, the one who introduced us to Tracy Chapman and Fast Car. (I can never hear that song and not think of you.) Dusty still has the book you gave him in the 10th grade..."Me, The Flunkie", he said he will get around to reading it one day. Lol. I hope you enjoy your
retirement and you get to spend as much time as you want in your mountain home. No teacher could ever be as rich as you are in love and memories of years and years of kids who will forever have an Amy McCall Cunningham shaped place in their hearts. Happy Retirement Day. You deserve it! Love you lots.
Ps.....thank you for not just making us feel special when we were kids, but thank you for making our son feel that way too. You have certainly left a legacy of love and devotion...and it will not be a legacy that's forgotten.
I have had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Cunningham for 8 years. She is such a sweet, special soul with a big heart. Amy makes sure her students feel motherly love. My husband had the pleasure of having "Miss McCall" as a teacher when he was in high school. When we first started dating and he found out I taught at WCHS, she was the first person he asked about. She made a lasting impression on him as well as many others. Mrs. C will be missed by so many but should find joy in the way she made so many people feel.
When I think about my high school days and the teachers I had the only one that comes to mind is Mrs Cunningham. She’s the only teacher in high school that encouraged me to think outside the box and believe in myself no matter what . She wasn’t just a teacher she was a mentor, she made you think abt your future and never think abt what you couldn’t do but always believe that all things are possible ,but I had to believe first . She also taught me that words are powerful wether it be on a piece of paper or coming out of my mouth . The key to your future is with in you if you speak and believe that you can achieve anything. And this is something that I STILL LIVE BY AND I ALSO TEACH MY KIDS THIS . She should win the award because with out her I wouldn’t be able to believe I could achieve anything , and that alone is a life changer. ...!!!!
There is always one teacher that students will talk about for the rest of their lives, because that teacher drastically changed their life. That rare teacher that has the ability to change the course of a student's life through inspiration and kindness. For Ware County high school, that teacher was Amy Cunningham. I can remember everyone wanting to be placed in her class. She had a way of connecting with students through her personality, wit, and kindness that made her standout from other teachers. There was something genuine in her, and students were drawn, encouraged, and inspired by that something.
Flash forward seventeen years...
I had just moved back home from Atlanta with my family. As we were unpacking boxes and moving them into our new home, a neighbor walked over with a large plate of cookies and a big smile. It was non-other than Amy Cunningham! We had just become neighbors! She has continued to love on me and my family as a neighbor the same way she did for all of her students. She never fails to take a few minutes and walk over to talk to my daughter when she is playing in the yard. She is always bringing over some sort of delicious food, or leaving a present of some kind on our doorstep. It doesn't matter what setting Amy is in (the classroom, or a neighborhood), she is going to positively impact and change the lives of those around her. I count myself fortunate to know her as a student, neighbor, and friend.
Thank you Amy for encouraging and inspiring students over the decades. Your work has not gone unnoticed and you are truly appreciated. Teaching is not for the weak of heart and from everyone I talk to, you were an amazing teacher. Congratulations on your retirement and I hope you enjoy a well deserved vacation!
The absolute joy of my tenth grade year at WCHS! I wrote poetry and discovered the thrill of literature under the direction of Mrs. Cunningham! Most wonderful and inspiring teacher ever!!
Amy is energetic, enthusiastic and has a heart of gold. With a son who is a freshman in college, I would love for him to have been taught in high school by his passionate Aunt Amy. She impacts everyone who’s path she crosses and I’m proud to call her my sister-in-law.
Amy is one of the most genuine and caring people I know. She has a special gift for connecting with young people at their level, making them feel special, and understood. I wish my son had the good fortune to have been in her class. I am honored to call her both friend and family.
Mrs. Cunningham has been a phenomenal teacher and mentor to both of my high school children. She really made a positive impact on the post high school graduation choices that they have made. We were so lucky to have had her in our lives. We wish her the best for her future and hope that she will enjoy her retirement. I am sure that she will continue to enrich the lives of everyone she comes into contact with even though she will be appreciating her much deserved retirement.
Of all the people that I’ve ever met I can’t think of one who is more deserving of this award. “Life changer” is probably one of the most fitting phrases to describe her. Of course she is an amazing teacher, but her teaching went far beyond the English and writing lessons she gave her students every year. She taught us how to be kind, and selfless, and wise. She taught us how to become artists-to use words to paint pictures, stories to bring people together, and songs to move the heart. She taught us to be brave. She taught us to laugh, and to not take things too seriously. You can bet every moment with our “Mrs. C” was full of laughter and life lessons. For those who call her friend now the same still rings true. She is one of my greatest inspirations and dearest friends. (And I’m sure I’m not only speaking for myself, but I can’t help but think of her delicious brownies and wish that I had a plate even now.) Thank you Mrs. C for all the love, dedication, and enthusiasm you’ve poured into your career and every single soul you’ve met along the way.
Started 1st grade with Amy and graduated high school with her. There is not a more genuine, caring, humble, and kind person on this earth. She has been that way her whole life. A great Christian woman that is true to her faith and her character never waivers. Proud to call her friend. There needs to be more Mrs. Cs.
I have known Amy Cunningham since we were 6 years old. She is one of the most amazing women I know. She has always had a smile that will light up a room. She never fails to talk about how much she loves her students. She truly has a God given gift of bringing out the best in everyone she meets.
I looked up to Amy growing up. She actually lived in my great grandmother’s house on my grandparents’ home place. Even though I was much younger, Amy was always friendly and encouraging to me. I remember how smart she was as well. When I decided to become a teacher myself, I was discouraged by many, told that I was too smart to be a teacher. I could do so much more with my life. Amy was an inspiration to me, and I decided to become a teacher despite the opinions of others. If her gracious demeanor and special smarts were meant for the education profession, then so were mine. I just hope I impact my students half as much as I’m sure she has hers.
Congratulations on your nomination. Sounds like you are very deserving.
I can't hear the name Amy Cunningham and think of a banal teacher who lectures what the textbook states. What I think of upon hearing the name Mrs. Cunningham is a phenomenal educator who teaches from her heart and helps students navigate what life throws at them. Whenever there is a success to be found, you will see Mrs. Cunningham there cheering you on. From small achievements to big ones, she instills confidence in you and enthusiastically congratulates your achievements. Furthermore, she is also there for the tough times. Unfortunately, nobody is immune from a unfavorable day, yet it is possible to become immune from letting those days affect you. Mrs. Cunningham taught me that. Anytime a crummy day happens, remember tomorrow is a new day to start over. A fresh start where yesterday doesn't have to weigh on your shoulders keeping you from achieving greatness. The best thing to do when a tough situation arises, is to pick yourself up and keep your head high. From there, you can only try again and do better. I wish every person in the world had the honor of having Mrs. Cunningham in their life. She makes a long lasting positive impact that radiates out into the community.
As a college roommate and life long friend, I have always admired Amy’s dedication to learning and teaching others. She has always cared about her student’s lives and future more than anyone I have ever known. To the point where I felt that I knew them personally even though I live hundreds of miles away. I know she will continue to touch lives in her retirement.
I grew up with Amy. She's always been a positive role model with a heart of gold. She's very deserving of the award.
I haven’t had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Cunningham as a teacher to any of my children. I just know her as one of the most kind and generous people I know. She is much deserving of this honor!
You were always one of my favorite people. You go girl.
Congratulations on your retirement! It’s been a long road since our days at G.W. Long! I can see by the numerous comments left here by your former students that you followed the lead of the educators we knew and loved! Then adding some wonderful and beautiful parts of yourself it sounds as though you embedded amazing love, care and your unique gifts in the minds and hearts of the students God gave to you along your journey.
Well done, Amy. Well deserved! God Bless you!!!
Congratulations on your imminent retirement!
I had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful person for the better part of all our lives. As a classmate she was always there to help anyone that was in need of extra help in any subject. Her personality is so infectious that it makes everyone feel so comfortable around her. If ever there was anyone that was deserving of this award it would be Amy cunningham. So I say to you please make the right choice and present Amy with " Life Changer of the Year Award.
Since I met Mrs. Cunningham in my 9th grade audition to Coffee House, I initially found her so gravitating. She's the bubbliest, most outgoing teacher there is. And for as long as I've known her, she always has some project to help someone in need. Whether it's buying clothes for students, raising money for Amris (a colleague's child, a long-term patient at St. Jude's), or baking her famous brownies; she constantly goes above and beyond for people. She has open ears for her students and their needs, solving any issue she can. My relationship with Mrs. C will definitely go beyond these high school walls and into my adult life. And that alone is what makes her a life-changing teacher.
P.S. I would be remiss if I did not say that she went above and beyond to see that I not only auditioned for Coffee House but also gave me the confidence to go through with my part in the show. She was there to reassure me on my talents when I wasn't so sure they were there.
Finally, getting to know this woman is to know someone who sees the best in you, even when you "aren't feeling it." She truly looks past the morning hair, the morning breath, the misplaced semicolon (because she knows you SHOULD have known where it goes). She gets in your face, and yet you let her. You just know that she sees something in you that you need to face. And in doing this, she is "a life changer." I do not know how she is able to do this for so many students at the same time, yet she does.
Mrs. Cunningham is one of the few gems in this school that I've witnessed who has true passion for what she does in this, "her career." Many a time I have lost motivation in a subject in school due to a lack of substance in the delivery of the information. I have had only a few unique experiences that have allowed me to engage properly, albeit this was years ago. Fate has not allowed for me to have Mrs. C as a personal teacher. Sadly, I could only dream of being in Mrs. C's class. It is true, though, to say that I would enjoy catching glimpses as I walked past her room's door or when I would hear anecdotes from other students. (I was, quite simply, envious of them.) Seeing all of the effort she would put into her productions (e.g., Coffee House, Ware County Theatre), It was her room that I knew I was totally missing out on every day that I was not there. The one time I had ever gotten the chance to have an extended conversation with her, she had given me some of the best advice I had received from a teacher on how to pursue my own passions. If "genuine" could be represented through one person, I truly believe Mrs. Cunningham would be the best candidate.
Amy has made such an impact over her time as a passionate teacher for her students. She has touched and enriched her students who are particularly vulnerable when they first arrive in class.
She has organized fund raisers for her school as “ The Coffee House”, making crafts to sell for a child that had cancer, and has gathered up clothes for students in need .
Her contributions to others becomes all the more impressive when you consider the many hours and hours of hard work she does to get prepared for the school year.
Amy has truly inspired her students to become more involved in other lives and reached out to those not as privileged as ourselves.
She shares her students talents with those around that make a positive impact .
Ms. Cunningham is the epitome of being an outstanding teacher. Both of my children have had the privilege of being taught by Ms. Cunningham, and it has been an honor to work down the hall from her throughout my teaching career. She will be truly missed. However, I know that her gifts to enrich people’s lives will continue to flourish throughout her retirement years. Good luck in the next chapter of your life Ms. C!
Mrs. Cunningham is a sight for sore eyes, before I even had her class I knew her. She could light up an auditorium--without a microphone. She the teacher you always wanted, someone who is funny, loving, sweet, and so very understanding, yet stern. She has been helping me since the day I step foot in her classroom. Her compassion can never run out. Her legacy at this school will never die; it will live on for ages and ages. There is no amount of words that can equal my appreciation towards Mrs. Cunningham, but my heart will always love her
I love Mrs. Cunningham, she was really kind and supportive when I told her about my Autism, she would also help me whenever I felt confused. In my opinion I believe she was the most kind and positive teacher I ever had!
I didn’t have ha as a teacher but I always stoped by Mrs C class everyday and she always had a smile on ha face and makes me feel welcomed everyday I come she’s a very giving person the first time she meet me she gave me sum pudding
What an awesome teacher Mrs. C was and is. There is no one like her and never will be. I learned so much in her class. She gave the motivation to write and express my feelings in ways I never knew I could. She encouraged her students, supported them and befriended them. She has a passion for teaching students and making sure they know they too are important. What an awesome teacher she is. I'm so thankful I was able to meet such a beautiful soul as Ms. Amy McCall Cunningham.
Ms. Cunningham is an amazing teacher and has left a lasting impact on so many. She helped me to gain new perspectives, learn to love reading and writing and taught me how to understand the big picture. There are few teachers that I remember from more than two decades ago, but my memories of Ms. Cunningham are so clear! She even played Tracy Chapman’s songs in class to explain poetry in lyrics to us! That inspired me and to be honest, still does to this day. I went on to graduate with a BBA in college but I still write songs as a hobby that I sing and accompany myself on guitar. Thank you Ms. Cunningham!
First, I would like to start off by saying Mrs. Amy Cunningham is an inspiring teacher. Every single day she reminds me and my class how much of a blessing it is to be great-- regardless of our circumstances, good or bad. She's always spreading positivity and is willing to listen and give the best advice. Mrs. C has helped me become motivated on days I wasn't happy or things weren't working in my favor. She also loves all her students and is willing to support any way she can--whether it is in school or personal. I can say that Mrs. Cunningham is one of the most genuine people I have ever met in my life, and I am blessed to have had her as my teacher!
Please do the right thing by giving Mrs. Amy Cunningham the "Life Changer of the Year Award." She has been doing this for 60 semesters. (She's been in school--except for summers--since 1975.) She wants to help young and old alike in our community be able to craft. She plans to use some of the money she can win to put together kits for those who cannot afford to do so (and we do live in an area where some folks are truly in need). Thanks in advance for giving Mrs. C this deserved honor.
Mrs. C has always made my day better and when ever she had the chance she would check up on me. She don't know how much that meant to me but I am thankful that she said three simple words "Are you ok?" and "I love you" I'm really going to miss Mrs. C and thank you for always encouraging me and telling 4th block stories that would inspire us or make us laugh. Love you Mrs.C!!!!
Mrs. C has been an amazing teacher. She makes sure every student she has is cared for. One day she pulled me out of class and asked me if I took my SAT yet, I told her no and she showed me how khan academy will help me with my SATs. When she told me that, I used it and if it wasn’t for her telling me I would’ve struggled when taking it. Mrs. C is the type of teacher that every student wants, but not every student can have.
Mrs. C is one of the most loving and caring people I know. Mrs. C has like a power when she knows something is wrong with one of her students. She is very out going and will break her neck for anyone of her students. Even though she has an illness going on, she makes sure she gets to school to help her kids learn, and I think that not only shows her caring side but also her professionalism. Mrs. C treats everyone equally and her love for people is unconditional -- no matter what. I look forward to going to her class every day because she is the most exciting teacher I have ever had.
Today, she is going to lay out a plan for helping me to embrace the challenges that are ahead for me. (I have a dream of playing football for a D-1 school, as well as possibly going into professional football. If I am honest, my head has not always been in the best place academically this year. I have, at times, wanted to "goof off," to procrastinate (not that this should be an excuse); Mrs. Cunningham has this "look" she gives. She does not have to say anything. She knows that I know what she means. The sad part is, the meeting I am having today is going to have her telling a coach that I am not mature enough right now to make it academically at some of the schools that are looking at me. That is where she comes in. . . .she was supposed to go to a school chorus concert last night, but she stayed and talked to one of my coaches for 3 1/2 hours. She missed the concert; she let ALL those students down who were looking to see her at that concert.
I am not happy that this happened, and I believe that starting today, I am going to have a renewed outlook on the importance of my academics.
This is what I am trying to say: Mrs. C brings out the best in her students--maybe not when she wanted them "to shine," but she just has this way of making us re-evaluate where we are in life, where we need to head. She is always saying: Choices take you; choices make you. That is true.
The other day she asked me, "Norton, who is your hero?" I said, "God." That is true. That is why Mrs. C is able to do what she does--despite physical setbacks, she is able to get in the right head space, and in so doing, she makes us re-think our situations.
So, Mrs. C, I am telling you here, on this NATIONAL PLATFORM, that you will get that college shirt from me one day. You may even get that NFL jersey you have been waiting to receive, and I want you to know that I WILL stay in touch.
All good things for you, Lady!
Norton
I had Mrs. Cunningham for two years, and she was also my homeroom teacher, so we got to know each other very well. I could say a lot of things about the things she taught me, or the memories that I have, but I don't have the room to write about how she changed my life. Instead, I am going to share my favorite memory with her so that people will understand the type of person she is. We were reading "The Crucible", and as it is a play, it had stage directions. I remember that my stage directions said to scream, so I let out the loudest, highest-pitched scream I could. Later, people told me that they could hear it all the way down the hall. After the initial shock, Mrs. C. applauded me for my enthusiasm. However, it was her classroom environment that sparked this enthusiasm. My class was into this book way more than any other group of teenagers should have been, and it was all thanks to Mrs. C. We learned about English and grammar, but we also learned a lot about life.
I didn’t have ha as a teacher but I always stoped by Mrs C class everyday and she always had a smile on ha face and makes me feel welcomed everyday I come she’s a very giving person the first time she meet me she gave me sum pudding
Mrs. Cunningham has been a big life changer for me personally. Before I had her as a teacher i had school and was just nonchalant about everything through life, pretty much just going through the motions. She helped me to realize not take my life for granite and make the most of everything. She is the best and there will never be another one of her.
You are the sweet teacher I know and the funniest person too.
Mrs. Cunningham is my role model for life. I wish to have such joy and happiness Mrs.C has everyday. She loved and believed in me before I even knew her. Everything she does is with pure love and great intentions. Mrs.C truly deserves the world plus more. She has left a mark in my life that I will never forget. Thank you for being a great teacher not just to me but also to my dad. Thank you for being you! Love you, Mrs C.
Mrs.C what can I say from the first day I came to your class to my last day in high school you’ve been such and inspirational person to me... words can’t describe how much you mean to me you helped me see the better of things that I thought I could never see the good in you a very special person and I love you mrs.c
My sweet Aunt Amy has been gifted with the ability to light up any room, put a smile on any face, and inspire minds of all types. Aunt Amy is a blessing to all who know her. She has a heart of gold and the generosity of Jesus. I can only imagine the impact she has had on the many students who have had the pleasure to grace the door of her classroom. The next teacher coming behind Aunt Amy has some big shoes to fill. After the long years of dedication to her students and school, she is every bit deserving of The Life Changer of the year award.
Ms.C will always be one of my favorite English teachers. She was a person that you can always talk to no matter what kind of trouble you have going on throughout life and always had some kind of positive attitude, I love and will miss you very much Ms.C XOXO!
Amy is the most loving, encouraging and thoughtful person you could meet. She is always bubbly and looks at life with optimism for everyone.
She goes above and beyond to help anyone she meets.
Often youth do not decide on their vocation in life until mid-college or later. That was not the case for Amy McCall. From childhood up, she desired to become a teacher. This passion was fueled by Mrs Joanne Knight, a teacher in Amy's community, who taught Amy in Sunday school. The investment Mrs Knight made in her pupil's lives was evident and resulted in positive outcomes. Amy saw this and committed to be that kind of teacher.
Amy went the extra mile at Auburn University, while working to help defray tution costs, dealing with a mom who struggled with bi-polar issues, she committed to her studies that resulted in her being honored as the "Outstanding Student in the College of Education"
at graduation.
As Amy began her career teaching at Ware County High, Waycross, Georgia she approached teaching with the same zeal she had as she studied to become the best teacher she could be in college. Going the extra mile was ordinary duty for Amy. She believed in doing all she could, to assist her students in becoming all they could be. During thirty years of investing in students at Ware County High, Amy has instilled within them not only knowledge in Literary Arts, but values that have made them better students, citizens and productive members of their communities. This kind of teaching results from someone God has called to become a teacher. They are blessed not only with knowledge, but wisdom and decernment to adapt curriculum to student.
I believe Amy has changed many lives for good through her career as a teacher at Ware County High and I believe she truly has been a "Life Changer" for good. I am very proud of her and her investment in her students. Her Daddy, Don McCall
Mrs. C is one of the most loving and genuine people I have ever met. Mrs. C has a way of knowing when her students need her and she is there for them. Mrs. C has left many children with a better insight on life because she always shows compassion and kindness. I am one of her students who had a rough home life and struggled with depression and loneliness but Mrs. C showed me a kindness that I had never been met with from a teacher and that I was not being met with at home. If we had more teachers like Mrs. C then the world would be a much better place. She makes school feel like a safe place. I have always felt like a loner but I can honestly say that Mrs. C is not just a former teacher but a life long friend. I hope that I am able to impact as many lives that Mrs. C has.
Mrs. Amy Cunningham, what an AMAZING human being! She is a cheerleader for all. Doesn't matter who you are or where you came from, Mrs. Cunningham loved you. I can remember several times where Mrs. C encouraged us in class. Whether it be through a compliment, a funny story, or a life lesson; she made sure we were encouraged before we left her classroom. I can never thank Mrs. Cunningham enough for her support and advice she has given me. She's taught me so, so much. If any deserves this award, it's 100% Mrs. C!
I have known Amy for about 20 years. Amy is my step daughter in law. Yes, she is, but more than that Amy is my hero. She leaves home to visit, but she really goes and corrects papers and tests and to come up with new and more ingenious ways to help her students.
I am a retired chest surgeon and I always thought that I was a dedicated physician, no, Amy showed me what being dedicated was is all about.
I believe that Amy is a deserving recipient for the award she has been nominated for,
Thank you,
I know Amy not as a teacher but as a friend. (I have heard many fabulous things about her love for teaching and her students though!) Amy has the kindest heart and so often thinks of doing things for others. She has a bubbly personality and does not know a stranger. In fact if she knows you, you are immediately considered her friend! She is the kind of person that I know I would have loved to have as my children’s teacher. She is such a loving person and would be a blessing to any child in her school who comes to know her. I know there are many deserving people out there but I know Amy would do something amazing if she were to be chosen!
we appreciate you teaching us its a pleasure having you teaching third block
Amy Cunningham !! God only made one ! But there should be millions more just like her. She is everything good in this world. She has a heart for humanity and especially the children. If any of her students struggled and lagged behind, she lifted them with love, encouragement and her knowledge. She wanted every one of them to succeed and she helped to set them in the right direction for their future. For 30 years she has been doing it and so many of her students have kept in touch with her because she forms deep relationships with them. She surely deserves to retire but it's a shame that so many kids won't have her in their lives. I know she will continue to inspire and love all of "her people" which means everyone she comes in contact with, because that's Amy. We who know her have been richly blessed.
I only know Amy Cunningham on a personal level - she is my daughter-in-law. Many times over the last 25 years I have been a sounding board for her. I've shared her fears, worries, joys, successes and a very few, what she thought were, failures. Her love and passion for her students have amazed me. There were times when I told her she couldn't help or save every one of her students - she didn't believe me She forged ahead and tried even harder. When we are out and about on our visits to Waycross It is a joy to see her students (former and current) greet her with smiles and hugs and laughter. Oh how I wish there were hundreds of teachers like her for our children. So many need her knowledge, determination, love, humor, generosity and faith. The fact that so many of her students have been inspired to become teachers and many, many more have gone on to wonderful careers and lives is a testament to Amy. She deserves this award, but even more she deserves the absolute best of everything in her retirement.
I remember the first week of school we were doing an assignment I was completely confused on; I emailed her about it, and she responded to me within 5 minutes. She asked me for a number she could reach me at, called me and walked me through the assignment. A few weeks ago I emailed her about taking late assignments (I had a lot due to work and personal issues) she took every one of them. Mrs. Cunningham did all of this without even meeting me because I'm a virtual student. With all this being said, Mrs. Cunningham truly does deserve this, and I'm so happy for her.
Amy is a very hard worker that goes the extra mile to help her students and coworkers. She puts in lots of extra time preparing for her classes. Congratulations on your nomination for the Life Changer award. Amy is very deserving of winning this award.
Thank you for being an amazing person and teacher! You started me down a path for a love of literature that years later lead me to a Masters in Spanish Literature. You will be missed, but go and enjoy those sunny vacations that you have so earned.

WCHS c/o 2002
I have known Amy Cunningham all of my life. Literally since the day I was born. She and my mother taught together at Ware County High and have been friends ever since. Oh the stories we can tell. I could not be more proud that she has been nominated for Lifechanger of The Year. I know for a fact that her being in my life has changed it for the better. From what I hear from her community and past students, she is above all. I love her so much and could not be happier. She deserves the world because she has constantly brought light into it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of my life and congratulations on your nomination!
This is Mrs. Cunningham. I hope this gets published because I want you guys to know that sad tears have turned to happy ones. I have not been keen on retirement until Colleen shared that she was honoring me with this nomination. LIFE-CHANGING for me is what it is. . .to realize that LOVE REALLY NEED NOT KNOW BOUNDS. I accepted the idea of retirement so that I could "walk the talk": I might need to shut one door before another could open. (I am literally sitting at the Blackshear Library right now, where I have been studying to take another section of GACE -- K-12 Reading Comprehension. I want to try to help younger, struggling readers find success -- both through literature and IN LIFE. I know. I know. . .some things never change.) I just received the "Computers going off in 15" message. My personal email is AuburnAmyGator@gmail.com Let's stay in touch. I still have a few more brownies to bake. I still have a few Life Lessons up my sleeve. And I want to be able to thank you for what you are doing for me. . .and Gatorland. . . . Keep spreading the Word, Y'all! Let's bring it HOME TO THE SWAMP!
Mrs. C has honestly helped me through a lot. She has helped me strive to be the best possible version of myself and I can't thank her enough. She has always been my shoulder to cry on, an ear I needed to listen and a great advice giver when needed. I appreciate your bluntness. Our time together slowly disappears each day but our great memories are forever with me. You’ve managed to make a “Hutchinson” LIKE coming to school. You push each and every one of your students to be their best self possible. I’ll forever live up to your expectations of a young, fearless redhead. I love you and wish you nothing but happiness and love for the rest of your years! Thank you so much for all the hard work and dedication you've put into us.
Mrs. C has been an inspiration to all the teachers and students around her. She has believed in them when no one else would.
Mrs Cunningham taught me to read
There are not enough words to describe the amazing individual that is...Amy Cunningham! She is ABSOLUTLY the very best in the business. Amy cares deeply about the students who are in her class and we can't say enough wonderful things about that, but what is truly inspiring is that Amy genuinely cares about people. When I was running the after school program at Ware County High School, my young elementary aged sons went with me to the high school. Amy took to my students and every afternoon when they came into the building, Mrs. C had something fun to show them or tell them. She would save them a brownie or she would tell them a story or she would have something that she "needed help with"! My boys felt so special because one day Mrs. C. brought her "magic cape" to school and they had races down the hallway. To this day, my boys still think the world of Amy Cunningham, and SO DO I!!! She is quite simply THE BEST!!!
Never had you as a teacher, but you'll ALWAYS be my friend! The things you did for these kids to grow and prosper is beyond words! For that, I am personally thankful! When they are praised and raised up in such a way as you have done for them, it carries over in so many positive ways. Life is just better with you in it! We love you big and hug you bigger!!! Congratulations! ?
Mrs.Cunningham is an inspiration to all.She brings brightness to student's days and tells of stories of life and life lessons. She is always helping everybody even those who lost hope for their grades. She makes school feel like a bright atmosphere and changes people's lives all the time. She is the teacher who strives for excellence and has truly dedicated her life to teaching. As quoted by Roald Dahl ''Somewhere inside of us is the power to change the world.'' She truly has changed the world of students lives and helped them with grades and their lives. She truly inspires everyone and makes the best banana pudding.I am grateful I got her as my teacher before she retires this year.Thank you Mrs.Cunningham for being such an amazing teacher.
Mrs. Cunningham is such a bright and positive soul. There hasn't been a single day where I've walked into her classroom without her greeting me and others. Mrs. Cunningham is a very supportive person, she is such a hardworking and outgoing woman. She has shared with our class so many different stories of her experiences throughout her life. The way she tells a story leaves you wanting to hear more and more about it. Winston Churchill once said "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." This quote describes Mrs. Cunningham. She is always ready to go above and beyond to give to others, especially ones in need. I believe her determination to motivate others has really impacted me in more ways than imaginable. Sometimes I have very rough days, but the moment I walk into her classroom makes the world feel so much calmer. Mrs. C is such an amazing helper, especially when it comes to classwork. I've never met anyone that teaches the way she does, she is very unique and makes things so much easier for her students to understand. Thank you so much Mrs. C! You are an awesome human being and I hope your retirement treats you beyond well.
Amy was one of the first teachers I met when I came to Ware Co. 10 years ago. I knew immediately that I loved her. Her energy was amazing! She cared about the entire school, came and supported our girls in basketball, and attended the FCA meetings in the mornings. I am so proud of Amy and wish her well. She definitely deserves any and all honor that she receives!!
Thank you for your many years of service. Don’t know if you will ever know how many lives you have blessed. Love you - Joshaun
Amy, I am thrilled that you have been nominated for LifeChanger of the Year Award. It was my honor and pleasure to serve as her Vice-Princial of Curriculum and Instruction at WCHS four years. Working with you was enlightening and inspirational each and every day. Your enthusiasm, professionalism, and humanitarianism are beyond anything I have ever witnessed. Never have I worked with a teacher more deserving of the title "LifeChanger." Please let me know if there is anything I can do to support you with your nomination.
There are not words to truly express the impact Mrs. Cunningham has had on my life. In high school, she was the one who changed my outlook on many things. She believed in me and loved me through the good days and the bad. She used strategies to teach me things that I now use to teach my students.
Mrs. C has been one of the best teachers a student could ever have in school. She has done so much more than just teach her kids, but she also helped us with life lessons, and with just being there when a student needed her. They never had to be her student either it could be any student that walked the halls of our school. Mrs.C is one of our greatest role models and will always be a teacher I will remember through life. Thank you for everything Mrs. C you mean the world to everyone. I love you so much!!!<3<3
When I was in 9th grade my mom had a dradly stroke. Not only did she make sure I was eating and Okay...she made sure I got home and chrcked on me everyday. Even after graduation we stayed in contact. She displays what Christ has i.parted in her and that love for other people. At time a where I second guessed my faith...she prayed and gavr me strength that I mever knew existed. I grew up and wised up through that experience. There will NEVER be someone like her...EVER ! I just adore her...congratuations Om your retirement!!!
I met Amy my first year teaching and learned more from her that I did in any education class. She exemplifies a model teacher. Her love and support for her students and her fellow teachers is unparalleled. Even now, years after I have left WCHS and lost touch with her, she serves as a touchstone in my teaching experience. What an amazing teacher, what an amazing career.
Mrs. Cunningham is the best teacher I’ve ever had. I’ve known of her since my freshman year and I hoped and prayed that she’d be my teacher one day. I was truly blessed to have that wish come true. Her energy impacted my attitude every single day. She makes you want to be your best self and to be goofy and honest. She’s an amazing lady.
Ms. C , I enjoyed your teaching and this awards fits you best . You should win this 1000x you deserve it . Good soul , Great woman , even better friend . I thank God he blessed me to encounter you .
Amy Cunningham is the Real-Deal. She has always been a champion of those students who might get lost through the cracks. She is definitely a life-changer for those students and many other students and teachers who have been lucky enough to know her.
I had the absolute privilege of having Mrs. C for my tenth and eleventh grade English classes. No matter what kind of day I was having I always looked forward to Mrs. C’s class. Mrs. Cunningham’s love and care for all of her students is so evident in everything she does. There were many days that she would not feel the best but she always made sure that we left her class with a smile. Mrs. C made learning fun. Her words invoked a certain curiosity and motivation in us to see what we were capable of. She always told the best stories, full of animated gestures and her one of a kind humor that kept us laughing. I will never forget the impact Mrs. C had on my life and she will always be the best teacher I’ve ever had.
Mrs C, you was my 10th grade English teacher and I haven’t forgotten you. You brought me out my shell by introducing me to poetry and having me perform at the Poetry Coffee House that year. You encouraged me and always made me smile with your bubbly energy. I’m so grateful to have had a teacher like you in my life. You are definitely going to leave a mark and the halls of WCHS are going to miss you.
She sees the best in everyone, even when you don't see the best in yourself!
From thirty years ago when Amy received the President's Award in Education at Auburn University she has positively affected all those who work at Ware County High School. Her ability to understand the total student from his/her home background has affected students' ability to achieve academic success and improve self esteem. Students realize that she truly cares about them. When a fellow teacher has a seriously ill child she dedicates long hours to fund raising projects to support financial needs and keeps friends and relatives updated to offer support and prayers. I couldn't be more proud as an aunt and retired educator of thirty years to read all the compliments by those supporting her as Life Changer of the Year.
Mrs. C was the only reason I didn’t dread going to school every day. When I would walk down her hallway, she would always be outside her classroom door, greeting students with such infectious happiness that you couldn’t help but smile. While attending her class, she would always make us students feel more like family other than students. I never remember hee getting angry with anybody when they made a mistake, but rather sat down and talked with them to find out what was wrong and if she could help. She is the mother of WCHS and always will be. If anybody ever had any problems, Mrs. C did everything in her power to help them no matter if it had to do with school or their personal life. Not to mention, her brownies were the powerhouse of WCHS. It’s sad to see her leave and I hope she has everything she wants in life and knows that she’s loved by many. GO AND PERSEVERE MRS. C! WE ALL LOVE YOU!!!
I had Mrs. C around 18 years ago. She was absolutely the best teacher! I still think about all the many lessons she taught me. She made me feel included and seen when I was struggling. She opened her home to have Christmas parties with her honor students. She was the first teacher that seemed human. She spoke to us as a real person and listened to our concerns.
C/O 99!. The way you taught us to look at ourselves. What you take the time to see in each and every student , and that boost of confidence only you can give!!
...and the recognition of a student 20 years later while taking their own kid to 9th grade open house! Lol
You are Loved by everyone Ms. C!!!
Thank you for everything Mrs. Cunningham! I hope you enjoy retirement and god bless you!
I graduated in 2004 and Mrs. Cunningham is one I can still remember vividly. Her spirit is absolutely contagious and sincerely life changing. I can only hope my child will have a teacher like Mrs. Cunningham in her life someday.
You were always so sweet and kind to me as a substitute. I always left our interactions feeling encouraged and like I've known you for years. You always said hello and smiled when we passed in the hall. You have a special spirit about you for sure!
I graduated in 2009 and can still remember the passion and energy Mrs. cunningham brought to her class and curriculum. She was one of kind in the best way. One of those people that never had a bad day, or if she did, she never showed it to her students or let it affect her passion for her class. I hope her retirement is filled with enjoyment and Dairy Queen blizzards. Congrats Mrs. Cunningham!
What an amazing teacher! Without question, one of most influential mentors from high school. She really looked out for me from the moment I met her. Her drive and motivation captivated me. Even when she was sick with walking pneumonia, her love for teaching shined bright. Side note: I remember her always drinking the diet green tea and sharing with her class. To this day, I sometimes have a random taste for diet green tea. Knowing Ms. Cunningham is about to retire makes me sad I’m only one way. That way is because my son Axyl will not get to experience her doing what she is called to do. I do hope I get to introduce the two of them to each other in the future. And I promise this, if it wasn’t for the grit and passion she showed to her job and to us students, I for one probably wouldn’t be here today. Thank you Ms. Cunningham! Enjoy retirement. And ROLL TIDE! But for one time only...War Eagle!
I remember your first year at WCHS (Miss. McCall) along with Jill Hyers. You two were the duo that made our school go round and set the bar high for others too reach. It’s hard to believe it’s that time already. I am sure the enthusiasm you had when the two of you first started has only grown for your students. I thank you for all of your years of dedication and service. You will be truly missed and I wish you the absolute best in all future endeavors. Even though you came earlier I was a part of the Graduating Class of 1995.
Being a student in Mrs.C’s classroom truly made me a better individual. I will always cherish the encouraging words she shared with me during my sophomore and junior years of high school. With her comedic anecdotes, there was never a dull moment in her classroom (which Omar can attest). Yet, nothing more solidifies her aptness as an educator than her heartfelt concern for her students’ well-being. Congratulations on this warranted achievement and well wishes on retirement!

Hi omg you was my English teacher back in 93-94 and I wrote a poem about my cousin who passed and you said it was amazing. You inspired me so much with that
I had her for my 11th Grade semester for American Lit. We spent ages on Crucible and Thomas Paine, but she made them very interesting. I was especially entertained when she allowed me to place Tituba, a Jamaican women accused of witch craft. I have occasionally seen her in public, and she is excited to see and chat with an old student. She is a brilliant person that can easily bring light to someone.
Mrs. Cunningham was my 10th grade English teacher back in the early 2000s. What I remember most about her class was her positive and energetic personality, her constant words of encouragement and advice, her teaching me a love of poetry, and our class' rendition of Oedipus Rex. When I became an educator myself, I would recall my experiences with her as a guide for the teacher I wanted to be. I even had my high school lit students act out their own rendition of Macbeth. Congrats on your retirement! You deserve it!
Many years ago I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Cunningham as my teacher during my tenth grade year at Ware County School. To say she was a great teacher is an understatement. I will never forget her staying after school to help me with writing. She invested in me, as well as ALL of her students, because she believed in us. Her enthusiasm for teaching was apparent on a daily basis. Fast forward twenty five years later.... Not only did I get the pleasure of having Mrs. C -that’s what we call her at school- as my teacher, but I also got the pleasure of being her co-teacher! WOW!! I get to co-teach with MY teacher from high school! She is STILL that same teacher today that she was 25 years ago. She still has that same love for teaching. It is evident that her students love her! On a daily basis she always has several students that just drop by to say hello! No one is more deserving of this award than this awesome lady! She LOVES and adore all of her “Gator babies!” She will never be replaced or forgotten. Her legacy will AlWAYS be ever present in the halls of Ware County Hogh School!
I never had Mrs. C as a teacher, but anytime I had a conversation with her she spoke to me as if she genuinely wanted to know who I was as a person, she cared for every student in the school and not just her own students, she is a wonderful person who deserves all the credit in the world. I’m not sure she even realizes the all the impacts she had on the students that she didn’t even teach, she is a blessing to the whole school and goes above and beyond anything that could have been asked of her with a smile on her face. Mrs. C was an inspiration to students and will continue to be so.
She was one of the best.
And she is so funny.
We still act silly when we see each other even at stop lights ??????
While attending WCHS, I never got the liberty to experience Mrs. Cunningham’s classes. She was well known for being an awesome teacher and was always so nice. I knew her name and her face and everyone knew her heart. Never forget the love you spread. Class of 2011.
Your so amazing. Thanks for always being there for me. You was there for me when no one else was. I will never forget how much of an impact you made in my life. I love you. BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!! STAY GOLD!!! You have an amazing giving heart. I miss you. Thank you for everything
I met Amy when she taught in Ware County's Confetti Summer Enrichment Program years ago and then earned her Gifted Program teacher credentials at Okefenokee RESA. Leading teachers to recognize what gifted students need is always fun, but it is even more fun when the potential gifted teacher is gifted herself. Amy was intelligent, talented, fluent, flexible, creative, and elaborative. Little did we know what that bundle of red-headed energy would produce over the span of her career. Amy is the perfect example of a teacher who teaches the whole child. In the classroom, Amy knows how to enhance educational standards to make them relate to students' lives. Beyond the classroom, she has been an example and mentor for an age group that naturally has challenges and hardships, and she has been quick to offer help for their emotional, spiritual, and material needs. Glasser said that students need love (or belonging), freedom, power and fun. Amy has provided all of that for her students. It is no secret that Amy's ability to persist through all these years and accomplish what she has accomplished is due to her faith. I am thankful that we have had someone with her intelligence, character, and faith working with our children for so many years.
I wasn’t one of Mrs. C’s students but my dad and brother were. She knew who I was and always made sure to put a smile on my face when she saw me in the hallways. A day never went by that I didn’t see her make a student laugh. The first thing she ever said to me was “War Eagle” when I was walking with my brother during open house. At the time I was just an eighth grader, and I was like “this teacher has taste in her college football teams.” I knew I would like her when she said that because you don’t hear that often in Waycross, Ga. I remember her coming back from school after having her medical issues and still being 100%. Most teachers just hand you packets and say, “I don’t feel good” “y’all fend for yourselves”. Not Mrs. C, she still had her classes doing class projects and all kinds of things. While most teachers are there for just the paycheck, she’s there to TEACH and make a difference in every students life. If there was one teacher that I wish I could’ve had, it would’ve been her. I may not have had her class but I feel like just her being around me made me feel like her student.
Ms.McCall as I know her was the best teacher. She was my teacher in 1996. She was the best. She brought Shakespeare to life. We lost a classmate that year to cancer, and Ms McCall helped organize some special memorials and books in our classmates honor.
Mrs. C was such an amazing teacher to me when I was in school. She taught me my senior year and I always enjoyed coming to her class. She is the type of teacher that you can go to with your problems and she would always give the best advice. She is such a beautiful soul and I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to be in her class!
Mrs. C, you may not remember every single one of your students, myself included, but I can say with the utmost confidence that every single one of your students remembers you.
You changed my life in your classroom, while I was going through one of the most difficult times of my life.
I still have emails we have exchanged and cherish them greatly.
There is no one more deserving of this award than Mrs. C.
Hey Mrs. Cunningham!
This was wonderful news to hear. You deserve every bit of this! You were an amazing teacher and made school so much fun. Happy retirement! If you are ever looking for a way to pass your retirement time come to Connecticut and ill throw you out of an airplane! Congratulations to you. Hope you have many more happy days.
Luke Akridge
Mrs. C, you really inspired me to bring my best to class every day. I am so happy to have been in your class.
When I think of my favorite teachers, you certainly come to my mind first. You had such a charisma and zest for life. To be in your presence was to feel inspired. When I read to my children, I do so with the same animation that you used to read to us. Thank you for the encouragement and for attending my baby shower in 08. Love you BIG!
Sharla
Thank you for encouraging the love of language and the printed word. You made me passionate about poetry and I have loved it ever since. 22 years ago you inspired me to be a teacher that is willing to go above and beyond for her students and I am thankful for you. My niece Delaney also thinks your pretty amazing!
Mrs.Cunningham was One of , if not my favorite teacher of all time. She helped me so much, and also very much cared about all of her students and it showed. I didn’t even call her by her name I called her “Mama C”, because that’s exactly how she acted. I really miss the times I had in her class.
Mrs C! The last time I saw you was at McDonalds early in the morning for breakfast just before you had to be at the school. Seeing you reminded me of all the wonderful times I'd pass you in the Hallway and you gave me a high five and told me to keep up the pace. I'll never forget that! Plus the Brownies you would always make and I wasn't even in your class. But I'd always stop by and grab one from you around Lunch and you are always make extra!
I wish you the best of luck in life and your retirement. Just know over 12 years ago you made an 11th Grader smile whenever he'd see you in the hall!
Take Care! <3
Former student and always a fan. You made some of the hardest days become a blessing. I have always cherished the time in her class and she made learning fun and memorable. There is definitely no replacement for such a wonderful leader and role model. Thanks for being you and making the world a better place. Congratulations on your retirement. Prayers of health and many more wonderful memories ahead.
Mrs. Cunningham came into my life in the 6th grade at Wacona Elementary. I'm not gonna give neither of our ages away, you would have to ask her about the "Wacona Days". I know that she was one of the few teachers I can truly say that "I loved". She had NO fear of telling you like it was and always took up time with all of us to be sure that we understood not only the school lesson that she was teaching us but the life lesson also. As an adult, I look back and laugh at the firey red head that could be as gentle as a kitten yet or as stern as a Marine drill sergeant. No matter how people thought of her, I know without a shadow of a doubt she changed my life and the outlook I had on it!!! Thank you for everything Mrs. C, it was an honor to be not only your student but also your colleague later on. I'll miss your happy-go-lucky personality and that mischievous smile everyday. Enjoy the retired life, you deserve it for all the tireless effort and love you gave out to all of us!!
You were Miss McCall when I had you at the old Ware County High School. Enjoy your retirement, you earned it!
Mrs. C is and always will be crazy amazing <3
My 9th/10th grade Honors English teacher. She was amazing. Her enthusiasm and infectious spirit could light up the dullest and darkest of days. She was genuine in all that she did for us. They definitely do not make teachers like her anymore. She is 1 of a kind! Congrats on your retirement. You deserve it!
Well deserved fave!!! I love you, congratulations!!!!
Mama C encouraged me to persue my career in writing and she inspired me to become an English teacher just like herself. The first time we met was when I was a freshman. She treated my like her own daughter and since then we have had a close relationship. Years after graduating high school I still call and talk to my favorite teacher and we catch up on life and writing. She helped me get through challenging times in my life and reminded me, and many of my peers, that we are all amazing and worthy of our dreams. I love this woman to death.
As someone who now directs a regional planning agency and writes hundreds of pages a month, I certainly attribute my creative writing foundation to Mrs. Cunningham. Thank you for making English and the art of writing fun.
Best wishes in retirement!
James
If I had to describe Mrs. Cunningham, it would take me a few days. I graduated in 2015, and she taught me many lessons. More than what was just on the syllabus, I assure you.
She was one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. Her class was always bright and her presence cheerful. She was honest in her teachings, advice, and guidance. She cared deeply for all of her students, made AMAZING brownies, and understood if/when life happened. She helped me through a really rough time, and assured me someone will always care. She taught creative and expressive writing can get messy and it’s okay!
Rage, rage within your writing. Do not crumple yourself into a wadded-up ball of paper, when you are a tall and might oak. Speak softly when you want to, and raise your voice to a boom, when you speak with purpose. We had to write our own rendition of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Mine had one curse word, mentioned only once. It was in reference to ‘my damned freckles’. The day after the assignment was given she advised we would be reading them aloud (this was not foreseen by our class). Everyone was nervous, including myself who had WRITTEN A CURSE WORD. She told us to not censor ourselves or our writings. When I read mine I fully braced for whatever Mrs. Cunningham had to say. I was not prepared for her laughter. She did not scold me, criticize my use of the word, or anything negative. She simply said it fit well, and smiled at me.
She gave me a “golden ticket” (polar express relation) of advice when I left her class. She gave one to all of us and said she was giving us ‘something you need. Something that I’ve noticed may be missing or have not yet mastered.’ -mine said “Contentment”. For years I did not quite understand what she meant; however, one day in my early 20’s it hit me. I need to be happy, and satisfied. She had mentioned once while I went through my rough patch that I was doing all I could, and I didn’t need to push myself any further once I had achieved my goal in some situations. I still think about that today.
Yes, push yourself to be the best you can be. Once it’s found, find contentment; coddle and love where you are and how far you’ve made it. Don’t disregard your hard work and say, “I didn’t do enough”, when you did all you could.
In short, Mrs. Cunningham has touched many lives, always leaving them happier in the end. I regret not keeping up with her after graduation, but I’ve always hoped she realized how impactful she was on my life. How impactful she is to everyone, she’s ever met on this earth. She is a powerful, yet gentle, burst of electrified wit. And I know she will be missed, maybe even more so, than her brownies.
If I had to describe Mrs. Cunningham, it would be: Crazy Amazing.
Mrs. McCall was a phenomenal teacher and the profession is losing the very best with her pending retirement. Best wishes for all life has to offer to her!!
I forgot to mention that the one thing that sticks out in my mind about you is the saying “cool beans!” I still say that to this day!
I had the utmost privilege to be one of Mrs. Cunningham’s students, although she was Ms. McCuller when I was in school. I remember her enthusiasm & always happy attitude. She’s definitely infectious, as I never left her class in a bad mood. She always had a smile & made learning something we all wanted to do! I’m so grateful that Ware County was blessed for so long with such a gem! I wish you nothing but the best in your retirement! You can definitely look back at your tenure & feel accomplished!!
You are so deserving of this. You will definitely be missed. You are the most understanding teacher I have had in a while.
I had Mrs. C before she was Mrs. C..back around 1996-97 when Ware County High was new. She was everyone's favorite English Teacher. English was my worst subject but she made it interesting and found ways to relate what we studied to our lives. She was always full of encouragement and pushed us to meet our potential. She seen the good in everyone, always had a smile on her face, and kept up with her students long after they left her classroom. To this day...25 years later, if I see her or my sister sees her, she always speaks as if we were in her class last week. She is one of the rare, diamonds in the rough, kind of teachers. She pours her heart into every class and a piece of her goes with each one. Thank you for all you have done Mrs. C!
This almost made me cry!!! You should hv a million awards bc you've ALWAYS been AWESOME!!! It's not too many teacher's that's willing to go out of their way to make sure your grades stay up while you're having to miss school to attend Dr's appointments(I was with child). I was embarrassed at the time bc I was in the 10th grade pregnant. But when I say this lady would stay after school with me to make sure I made up every assignment and test to keep my grades up and never made me feel bad about my situation. I'll NEVER forget her for that. And her smile would brighten up the darkest room bc she was always happy. And I'm glad my oldest son had the pleasure to hv you as his teacher also. And you still had his baby picture from 2001. I love you always and forever!!! Congrats on your nomination and retirement.
My goodness! Words CANNOT even begin to describe the true amazingly beautiful things about Mrs. Cunningham! Every single person she has ever came in contact with has just fallen in love. She has, and always will be, an inspiration to everyone! I first had Mrs. Cunningham in 10th grade English, gosh, 13 years ago. Even after high school she and I have kept on contact with one another. She is the definition of the perfect and most memorable teacher, confidant, friend, colleague, and person. Mrs. C has always shown her light and brought us back to where we needed to be. It has always been such an honor to be any part of her life! I'm so beyond proud that she is the choice, but I am also very much not surprised! ??
Mrs. Cunningham! I can’t tell you how much the little mantras and things you have stayed with me! I hope you enjoy retirement and you deserve this award more than anyone i know. P.s. i still talk about “the cornfield” all the time??
I had Mrs Cunningham my 11th grade year of High School. That was one of the hardest years of my life. I experienced a very traumatic event in my life and she wrote me the most sweetest comforting letter in a card. I will never forget not only her kind words but her affection as a teacher. She had a way of just capturing me with her voice. She is truly one of a kind and I will always remember her for her kindness and uniqueness as a teacher?
MRS.C!!! I think learned more about life in your class than anything else. My class went through some life events with you and we all came out better for it. I will never forget us trying to learn Thriller or the t-shirt we had made of all the sayings and jokes that came out of that class. The room was always filled with love even though there was a lot of heartache that year. Your smile and laugh was always waiting to greet us, and even when you had to criticize or discipline, it was done in love. Ware County High school is losing an absolute GEM!! I know you have long earned your retirement. I honestly don't know if you will enjoy it, but I hope you can. I know you will miss all of your kids and the busyness that the school family life provided. Try to relax and enjoy all of the small things. Love you big!! Congratulations.
One of my Favorite Teacher's Ever...I knew her as Miss McCall! Her smile and laugh would light up the entire hallway! I know without a dought each of my classmates could tell you at least one positive thing about her being in our lives! I saw her picture and instantly smiled! Such a sweet soul deep inside and that sweet smile to match! Congrats to you Miss McCall or now known as Mrs. C!!! You deserve every bit of this recognition!!! ???
Mrs. C!! No words can express how dear you are to my heart. I haven’t seen you in years but you cross my mind all the time. The time I spent in your classroom were some of the most amazing and memorable moments I have from high school. I always loved to read and to write my head was constantly in a book. That made me feel like such an outsider to my peers. I never felt like that In your class my creativity blossomed under your influence! I love you very much and congratulations!
Best Wishes
Kimaya
You were one of my favorite teachers ever. I always enjoyed coming to your class and felt so welcome and at home there. Best of luck and congrats!
Hands down one of my absolute favorite teachers in my years at WCHS, I'm from class of '09. She was so attentive and caring and loved all of her students equally. I'm so happy I had the privilege of knowing her.
Mrs. C is one of those teachers that you read is retiring and become sad at the realization that your own children will not have the privilege to be taught by her. She is one of the teachers who inspired me to go to school to teach high school English, and I only hope I can influence my future students a fraction of what she influenced myself as well as ALL of her students. She taught me in 10th grade and one of my favorite memories is when we were discussing our thoughts after completing our state writing assessments. Mrs. Cunningham had been advising us in the weeks leading up to the writing test to learn new “bigger” words in place of more common ones. One example she used was the word “plethora” in place of “many.” Our class must’ve really taken this advice to heart because not one of us didn’t use the word plethora in our writing assessment. If that doesn’t prove that she captivated her students attention, I’m not sure what would.
Love you always Mrs. C, wishing you a plethora of relaxing days to come!
Hey mrs. C!! You were always a shining light for me in highschool. I miss singing for you with our choir when you just needed a boost. You always lit up the room, and made everyone’s day so much better. You deserve nothing but the best. Stay sexy ??
Mrs. C you were the best teacher! You inspired me to write my feelings down by writing creatively. To this day if I’m sad, happy, or just feeling blah I take a notepad and begin to write. Thank you for being so encouraging, understanding, and quite honestly just being you. Have a wonderful retirement you deserve it!
Such an awesome teacher ..She me caught off guard last month when she noticed me after all these years. I will always remember you as being a teacher that cared and showed it! A very bright, loving and kind spirit you are! Enjoy your retirement
You are the reason I continue to write and use writing as an outlet. You always encouraged me through my writing endeavors. Coming back to school after my brother was murdered was so very difficult, but you always helped to brighten my day. I will finish my book one day, and you will be the first to receive a copy! You are an amazing person and educator! I am so very blessed God put you in my path! I will never be able to put into words how much you meant to me that year, and the years after! You played a very instrumental part in my well being and I can never thank you enough!! Congratulations on your retirement!!
Mrs. Cunningham and I go way back. She is a colleague of mine now, but I met her for the first time more than 20 years ago when she became my quiz bowl coach during my 9th grade year of high school. (Back then, she was Ms. McCall.) What a breath of fresh air she was! She was a force of nature that had infectious enthusiasm, warmth, and vivacity with a brightness to match her enormous smile and mop of curly red hair. I have never met anyone before or since like her, and I probably never will. When I look back, I realize that she came along in my life when I really needed someone like her. As a young teenager, I was very insecure about my looks to the point that it impacted the way I interacted with my peers. I was often shy and quiet in an attempt to go unnoticed. Because her looks were similar to my own - people often mistook us for mother and daughter -, Mrs. Cunningham showed me another way of being that was possible for me. She inspired me to be proud of myself as I was and not hide away as if I were ashamed. She helped me to have the bravery to emerge from my “shell” and just be me. In the 10th grade, I was delighted to find that she would be my English teacher for the year. I still remember the poster I put together for a nonfiction book project on the Lusitania for her class! For my last year of high school, I was Star Student and had to nominate someone to be my Star Teacher. My first thoughts were of Mrs. Cunningham. Truthfully, there was no one else in the running because no one else could hold a candle to her! Fast forward a couple of decades, and here I am working side by side with her. Even all these years later, Mrs. Cunningham still shines with her caring and sparkling personality. She is still a gifted nurturer who brings love and joy to the students around her. Maybe she’s never had any biological children, but surely her “work children” must number in the thousands by now. I know I am not the only life that she has changed for the better!
Hey! Finally getting out of there huh? Hope life is treating you well thank you for all the knowledge and great stories you’ve told !! Love you lots wish you the best
20 yrs
20 yrs ago I was an average student athlete that was trying to deal with the process of applying for colleges while simultaneously mourning the fact that my days of on the field were numbered. This woman understood myself and many others with an empathy that is unlike any other I’ve yet to come across another human being like her. Her passion and love for molding, helping, and sometimes pushing her students is unmatched. If she ever felt sorry for you, she never let it show. Rather she was always able to somehow build confidence in kids that may be feeling sorry for themselves. Especially a somewhat poor kid with a disdain for writing. She spent hours after school helping me write multiple essays to get into the colleges of my choice. I am so thankful to know Mrs. Cunningham. No one deserves this more.
I’m so excited for you! Congratulations! I am so thankful I was able to sit in your class, and soak up all you had to teach. You didn’t just teach us English, you taught us about life. THANK YOU! Enjoy your retirement!
I’ve always loved her personality and her passion to genuinely help students!! Just her smile and “pep” made my day everyday when I was in high school and I was never one of her students...She most definitely deserves this!!!
Mrs. Cunningham is a gem! She was one of my absolute favorite teachers in high school. I enjoyed having her as a teacher and mentor. She was passionate, creative, and inspiring! I am so happy that I had her as my teacher back then but even more happy that she is still teaching and my children have had the opportunity to have her as a teacher as well. This is well deserved!
Mrs.C is one of the most caring, loving, down to earth teachers I’ve ever had. She is just one of those people you can turn to for advice and she will not sugarcoat. If she could she would take the shirt off her back and all the money in her wallet to help someone in need. She has such a kind heart and deserves all of the recognition for what she has done.
Mrs. C. is encouraging and loving and kind and witty; however, there is no amount of effort that I could put in to thanking her for everything that she has done that would ever be enough. There is not one human being who could do everything that she has done for the world. Sometimes we speak more eloquently with a few words than with entire paragraphs, and I think I do so when I say that Amy Cunningham is nothing short of miraculous.
Words can't describe how wonderful Mrs. C is. She is a great person with a big heart who will do anything to help those in need or struggling in class or on an assignment. She has made class fun with all her amazing stories and energetic personality. I can't believe this is her last year teaching in high school. These upcoming students really would not understand what they are missing out on. Most fun teacher I've had in years.
Mrs. Cunningham (or Mrs. C, if you will) deserves this more than anyone else. For the two years I had her class in high school, she made such a positive impact on my life. My twin sister and I were having a very hard time with our home life, and she was always willing to listen. She knew I had a passion for writing, and she offered to sign us up for tutoring— not because we needed it, but because she knew we’d have an extra hour away from home. During that time, she wrote poetry with me, helping me not only with my education, but also my peace of mind. She’s witty, intelligent, and so inspiring. She truly cares for each and every student she has. She made my love for writing stronger than it had ever been, and she’s one of the reasons I’m still alive to this day. So, if you’re reading this Mrs. C, WE LOVE YOU!!!... and your brownies, too.
Years ago (20+) I sat in her class as a student and now I have had the pleasure to work at the same school with her! Just like back then, every time I leave her classroom I feel better. She just has this way of making you think for your self and for others. She always some project going to help someone or something. Mrs. Cunningham likes to check in on you and always has something positive to say. Some may say she is a little crazy, but just think of all the things she has read from students over the years. Its always said it takes someone special to teach, Mrs. Cunningham is just that!
I don't even know where to start, there's not such a thing that can describe Mrs. Cunningham, how could you describe someone who's more than a teacher to you, someone who makes you laugh with every story, and every adventure of her life, the teacher who's willing to help even if she had hundred more things to do, that's what made her so unique, and I'm so glad I got to had her as my English teacher, I don't think no one could ever replace her, and I know for a fact that no one would love "her 4th block" more than she did.
We love you and we're really gonna miss you.
I had Ms. Cunningham in high school and now teach at Ware County High with her. I recall her being one of my favorite teachers as she was always happy. Who wouldn't love to walk in a classroom where you know your teacher is always in a good mood? She is still that same teacher today, only a few more years of experience. She has been an asset to Ware County and we will definitely miss her sweet and upbeat spirit after her retirement.
Mrs. Cunningham is one of the most positive women I have ever met. I’ve never met someone who so genuinely cares for each and every person around her, and there is no such thing as a ‘stranger’ to her. Everyone is a friend of Mrs. C and she goes above and beyond to make an impact on the life of everyone she comes into contact with. I graduated in 2019, and invited her to my baby shower in January 2021, and was so surprised and overjoyed when she showed up and we were able to reconnect like we had never lost touch. If there were ever a person who deserved this award, it’s Mrs. Cunningham. She will always have a special place in my heart.
I had mrs.cunningham in high-school, she was the best teacher ive ever had. When i found out i was pregnant she kept up with my progress and even came to my baby shower. We've kept in contact over the years. Everytime you see her out and about she greets everyone with a hug and big lovely smile! Shes been thru so much in her life and still remains strong with the most infectious personality! Shes well deserving of this award ??
There aren’t even enough words to explain how good of a teacher/women Mrs, C is. She taught me both my sophomore and junior year & even kept touch my senior year. She increased my knowledge in English also pushed me into considering it to become my major. I can remember being stressed out over my first college essay and reaching out to her. She literally always comes through!
If I had to describe Mrs. Cunningham to someone who has not had the privilege of meeting her, I would say that she is the closest thing that I have ever seen to Secretariat in human form. If you have never heard of Secretariat, he was one of the most famous race horses of all time. This horse overpowered his competitors and upon his death it was determined that this was due to his heart being roughly twice the size of a normal race horse. Mrs. Cunningham is very much like Secretariat, I think if you were to look inside her you would realize that her heart is simply larger than most. She truly cares for each and every student that steps into the halls of Ware County High School. She does her best to let each and every person know that they are loved and appreciated on a daily basis. We will never be able to replace Mrs. Cunningham upon her retirement, and I think she will go down in the history books as a legend in her own right due to the positive impact that she has made in the lives of so many individuals.
Ms. Cunningham taught my son during his 11th grade year (2010-2011). During this year, he went through some difficult times emotionally. As with many teenagers, he did not always share with me, but he did express himself in his writing at school. Ms. Cunningham reached out to me after she read one of his assignments. She was concerned about his mental well-being and wanted me to be aware. I remember being overwhelmed that she cared so much that she would take the time to share with me. To this date, she is the only teacher that has ever contacted me regarding one of my children, about an issue that wasn't concerning grades or behavior. She cares about every aspect of her students. I am so grateful to her because she made me aware of a situation that I otherwise may not have known; a situation that could have resulted in a devastating outcome. As an educator myself, her example has inspired me to pay attention to the "whole" child. Amy Cunningham has made a difference in the lives of so many....children and adults. Thank you Amy.! You will never know what you mean to me and my family!
It's a real shame that I've worked at WCHS for 8 years and never had the opportunity to get to know Mrs. Cunningham on a personal level. We've always been stationed in different locations of the building and have only managed to share brief exchanges of acknowledgement when passing in the hallways or chatted about how the day is shaping up while standing in wait for the next available copier. Sadly, there's a lot I don't know about Mrs. Cunningham, but years of observation have revealed two things about her that have shaped my admiration for her. First, she's the genuine article, her actions and words are always consistent with her caring and compassionate nature. Anyone who encounters Mrs. Cunningham in the hallways is always acknowledged with a warm greeting and some words of wisdom or encouragement. Second, she pounces on every opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of others. On a number of occasions I've been both delighted and entertained by the sites and sounds of her exuberant displays of celebration. We will all miss that infusion of positive energy Ms. Cunningham provides with every encounter. There is no one more deserving of this award than Mrs. Amy Cunningham.
Mrs. C is a very good and very caring teacher doesn't matter what day of the week it is: she will help you! How do i know this? I was one of those students she helped. There were days I didn't want to be in class or even want to do the work, but Mrs. C will find a way to help u to enjoy the work, and unlike other teachers, she will actually make it fun. Without a doubt, she will get you to understand the work so that you will indeed pass her class. There's no problem u cant come to Mrs. C about. . . she will help u with other class work, or even if u are in need. She will help you out no matter the circumstances; she will be there to help. She is the type of person you can call on any time of the day, and she has the answer and a solution to your problem (or she will find one). With all this being said, I wish there were more teachers like Mrs. C, and I'm sad to see her go. Yet, I hope teaching me was fun. I enjoyed the class and the life lessons she taught me. Have a good retirement (though I hear you are going to work with 5th grade struggling readers. They don't know what is coming for them!) Mrs. C, I hope your retirement is as good as u where to all your students.
I have worked with Mrs. Cunningham for almost 20 years. She ALWAYS has a smile, a kind word, an encouraging word, a compliment, and an infectious positive attitude. It is very clear that she loves her job and has a heart for her students. Not only her students, but ALL students. We at Ware County High School will definitely miss her presence when she retires. Mrs. Cunningham is very, very deserving of this award.
It has been a pleasure not only working with my War Eagle buddy but also having her as one of my high school English teachers. I can remember us analyzing song lyrics in class and how they related to the real-world. She will be missed!
I met Ms. Cunningham when I was a student in her 10th grade English class. I remember her being the teacher who always had an extra moment for us. She taught us a love for reading and literature as well as a few life lessons. She came into my life again when my own daughter began as a freshman at Ware County High School. My daughter was never in her class, but she got to know Ms. Cunningham through the Fine Arts Department. Ms. Cunningham was always a generous and enthusiastic supporter of the department and the biggest fan of all of the students. The "Poetry Coffee House" that Ms. Cunningham hosts gave my daughter and many, many others a "voice" they may have never had. Now Ms. Cunningham, or Ms. McCall, as I knew her will retire as my co-worker. She sets an example for me and others of how to have an impact on students and be a positive force in their lives. I count myself blessed to know her in all of the ways that I have. Happy Retirement to Mrs. Cunningham who has always been my answer to, "Who was your favorite teacher?"
We need more teachers like Miss C. Not all teachers love and support their kids. She pours her heart and soul into her kids. Even if it's not about school. She show's her kids, and everybody the love of Jesus!! She encourages her students to be better then their life style. Don't let the bad situation, define them. She is loved by all who work with her. And all of her students love her the most. She will dearly be missed!!
Mrs. Cunningham is "one of the good ones." She has a passion that shines for all those around her!
Mrs. Cunningham is a very kind and friendly lady. She goes out of her way to make people feel welcome and appreciated. She has excellent relationships with her students and fellow staff members. She teaches with commitment and compassion. She leads others through action. She deserves the award because she works hard and cares! She will be missed at the high school.
I have worked with Amy Cunningham since I came to Ware County 16 years ago. She has a real heart for our students and for what they might bring to our community. She gives them a strong academic foundation and feeds their souls as well. She is an encourager from moment one. She works hard to find connections with everyone she meets and makes sure that her students feel heard and cared for, even when they are being pills. She sees the best in others and tries to bring that best self out of hiding. She is a unique personality that stands out in a crowd and she provides a comforting anchor for so many of our students (and staff) who have been tossed about by life. I am proud to be her colleague and honored to call my friend "Sister from another Mister".
There are times that you meet someone that is like a rare gem or a shiny new penny that stands out glinting in the light of day. A person with a kind and beautiful spirit that causes you to be better just once you've been in her presence and talked with her. Mrs. Cunningham is a genuinely kind and gracious young godly woman with the well-being of others never far from her mind. This is especially true when it comes to our youth. In the time that I've known her I have seen the evidence of her generosity, the positive and inspirational influences she has impacted upon the young lives in Ware County High School. The students look fondly upon her like children to a mother and faculty and colleagues call her friend and sister. We all believe we are better having known her and certainly feel better after just a brief conversation with her. I want to give thanks for a courageous and brilliant educator that thought it not robbery to invest her time and personal consideration through unconditional love toward all of those she reaches without meaning to reach us. Meaning: the unconditional love that comes from her may come in the form of a life lesson, correction, a prayer, instruction, or a kind word or message of encouragement, she gave it willingly and without knowing how it would compel and motivate us. Thank You very kindly Mrs. Cunningham for everything that You do, and that "everything" is a lot. You are a rare and beautiful gem to be regarded, respected, and treasured above all for the contagious positive character, the powerful charismatic presence, and the creative professional inspiration You instill and bring with every step of every day. You are very Important and Awesome, and I'm very grateful to know You and call You Friend.
Mrs. Amy Cunningham has dedicated her entire career to investing in, inspiring and teaching Ware County, Georgia's teenagers. She is a gift that cannot be replicated, any student who has been blessed to have been a member of the many classes of students she taught will tell you her zeal for learning and her specialized outreach to each student is what makes EACH student feel more loved than with any other teacher. The connections she builds with, not only students, but also teachers is what grafts the groups of people she touches.
Mrs. Cunninghman cannot "not" love all people. She has worked diligently to build a large following of adults who understand the importance of skills necessary to become efficient and effectives readers, writiers and well-rounded productive citizens. Without her compulsion to grow young people into responsible adults, and the adults she works with into adults who love and appreciate creativity, spontaneity, the world of "Ware County High School" would have missed the opportunity to create "Bibs for Babies"in Haiti, enjoy the finer written novels of "literary merit" nor would they have none been exposed to the totally infectious laught that echos down the halls of the school. She has faced multiple bouts with illnesses that made breathing difficult, suffered through changing multiple classrooms only to find out she had yet to move again and even battled and "beat" cancer while simply continuing to teach and inspire learners of all ages.
Her greatest accomplishment is the ripple effect her gracious and giving personality have had on all people in the Ware County High School building. She will never be forgotten and will live on in the hearts of all who have been taught by her. So often is NOT the measure of teacher structure nor the depth of instructional practice that touches lives and changes life choices forever; no - not by a long shot is the importance of education resting ONLY in learning facts, information and testing knowledge - it IS however and always WILL be the character, and love of people and relationships that merit the most accomplishment in the life of a teacher.
This educator, Mrs. Amy Cunningham, will never see the end to her prosperity, for her, it lies not in the numbers nor the accomlishments, but, in the relationships that were nutured, that grew and then flourished when students who "made it" to a GREAT university... and NOT "Po-Dunk University"!! May Amy Cunningham live long, prosper much from her investment and may she NEVER be forgotten!
Since my first year here, Mrs. Cunningham has always stood out as an exceptional teacher. Every student I know that has had her as a teacher have loved being in her classroom. She has the biggest heart and will go above and beyond for any student in the school. She will surely be missed next year.
Mrs. Cunningham has a natural, genuine way of making you feel loved. She is ALWAYS thinking of others and what she can give or do to help someone. In the 5 years I have worked with her, I have never seen her appear to be anything but the happy, positive, ray of sunshine that she is. Even in the midst of serious health problems a couple of years ago, she was here, teaching, mentoring and loving her kids every day possible. Her students absolutely adore her. There have been times when I have noticed that a student in my class seemed a little down. When asked "Are you okay? Is there anything I can do for you?", so often, the response has been, "Can I go see Mrs. Cunningham?" These students always return carrying a much lighter load than they left with. Mrs. Cunningham has the gift of lifting the spirits of everyone in the building. She is beloved by all and will be missed. I am so happy for her that she can retire knowing, without a doubt, that she has meant so much to so many. I wish her much peace, and lots of rest, but I do hope we have the pleasure of working with her again in some special way.
Indeed there is no replacement for Mrs. Cunningham! I met Mrs. Cunningham about six years ago when I became a Paraprofessional at WCHS. Mrs. Cunningham allowed me to tell my testimony to her class. She looked at me and said, "Oh you have a story to tell don't you?" Indeed I did and that landed our friendship. She wanted me to encourage them with my story. Mrs. Cunningham reminded me so much of the teacher that gave me a dress when I was twelve years old after my mother passed away. I searched for this teacher but couldn't find her but Mrs. Cunningham was just the person that was so much like her. Indeed she is inspiring, loving and such a great motivation to everyone. She is a role model of the love that Christ wants us to live! I will miss here at WCHS and her shoes will be hard to replace! Mrs. Cunningham don't you have too much fun without us! Continue to be the great inspiration you are because this world needs more people like you! May the Lord continue to bless you in every area of your life!
Amy Cunningham is a positive inspiration to students and teachers at Ware County High School. All schools strive to create a "positive learning environment." Mrs. Cunningham plays a vital role in helping our school achieve this. All students in her class feel welcomed and loved. They know she cares, and because of that, they strive to do their best work. She goes above and beyond to create opportunities that many students in rural areas do not have. One example is the "Poetry Coffee House" event that she hosts each year. This event allows students from all backgrounds to share poems and inspirational moments in a caring, supportive environment. I highly recommend Amy for this award!
Mrs. C always has a kind word and a smile for everyone! If you're having a bad day and need a little sunshine in your life, just stop by Mrs. C's room for a few minutes. She will brighten your day!
Mrs. Cunningham's classroom was the one--out of the whole school--mentioned by our SACS accreditation team. They noted her motherly demeanor and the homey atmosphere. She is always making brownies to celebrate her students. She is truly deserving of this prize.
