Music that Describes Keirstin

Keirstin Charles was nominated by an anonymous family member, as well as her colleague, Janel Cimo.

"I met Keirstin when I started teaching at Estelle," explains Cimo. "One day, I had a student who began acting erratically and suddenly fell asleep. I called for help, and she ran into my room and stayed with my student and I. I was scared to death, and she handled the situation like a pro. It turned out he had had a seizure. She stayed with us until he left with his mom. I don’t think the class would have stayed as calm without her."

"She helped all of my students’ ailments, from fever and tummy aches, to head lice," said Cimo. "She was always on top of COVID-related issues, from contact tracing and quarantining, to keeping us informed on where we could go for testing. Not only did she help my students, but she also helped me when I asked for advice about my own personal health and that of my mom’s progressing Alzheimer’s."

"Keirstin genuinely takes pride in her job and in making sure her kids are well cared for at her school," said the family member. "When my son started school, she researched who the nurse was at his school and helped me contact her through her school email to explain my son's rare blood disorder so that a plan could be in place if something happens. I'm not sure I would have been able to explain his disorder without her help."

Nurse Keirstin is a great person to be shown such appreciation. Working with her for over 3 years, I must say she makes my job less stressful. As the pre-k and kindergarten severe profound teacher, I have the pleasure of working with nurse Keirstin, regarding my students health and well being. She has repeatedly gone above and beyond for not only the students at the school but also the staff. When training us on medical procedures and techniques, she makes me feel comfortable and less stressed for when a medical emergency arises. There have been a number of health emergencies in my classroom over the years. This required her experience, training, and overall calm nature when putting her skills at work. She has always been there to answer questions, provide helpful tips, and encourage us though moments we need to address various student health issues. You deserve this award. Thank you for all you do!

Nurse Keirsten is so committed and loving to her students. She has cared for my son, Javeyn Palmisano, with Type 1 diabetes for several years. She is so patient and loving. Her nursing skills have become mother supporting to my son, and he knows it. It is truly a blessing to have a school nurse that cares for your child as one of her own.

Chas Dufrene Posted over a year ago

Keirstin is and has always been a loving and caring person with a soft-spoken voice and demeanor while demonstrating strength in her commitment and uncompromised integrity. She is a very nurturing parent of 3 energetic children, a supportive life partner as a wife that has effectively managed and worked through many challenges that life doles out over the years. Her zeal, fair judgement and judicious performance in her daily job in caring for the school kids, parents, and co-workers is, and has consistently been uncompromised. She demonstrates a strong desire for continued learning in the nursing profession, technical adeptness / acumin, and unwavering character, while also maintaining a firm and appropriate level of assertiveness when situations arise sometimes requiring that particular style of coaching and or leadership.( Iron magnolia) An example that comes to mind is her recent leadership role on a Covid 19 overview component to the staff and parents to enable reopening the school this year. She worked diligently to enhance her pubic speaking skills confidently with concise materials that were easy to understand. She is a positive influence on the kids and parents and an advocate for those in need. In general, while people may not always remember specific matter details, they always remember how a person makes you feel. Keirstin is a role model in that arena. Her participative leadership style is extremely effective due to her perceptive listening skills, open mindedness, and humility that is very engaging in problem solving to meet and or exceed expectations. Additionally, Keirstin's engaging smile and personality puts one at ease in difficult or crisis situations by remaining even keeled and focused on the germane aspects and details without getting caught up in emotionalism during her daily activities and challenges. I am very excited and pleased that she has been recognized for consideration as a candidate for this award. Furthermore, I believe she is worthy of receiving this award for all of her tireless hard work and love she brings to the table along the journey.

How do I begin to even put into words how remarkable of a person and employee Keistin Charles is. During my leadership as the principal of Estelle school; working alongside you for those ten years was fulfilling and rewarding. Mrs. Charles is passionate and patient in her quest to succeed as a school nurse. Those two qualities are much needed on Estelle's campus,, given the fact that the school has the largest Special Education populated school in our district. Additionally, our district is the largest in the state of Louisiana. I have been able to learn so much from Mrs. Charles. Together with her skills as a nurse and my capacity as a school leader, we were able to work seamlessly and make the best decisions for our most vulnerable students. Not only will Mrs. Charles be the best school nurse throughout the journey of my career, I have gained a lifelong friend because of the innate person she is professionally and personally.

As a parent of a child with special needs, I can HONESTLY say Nurse Keirstin is one of the kindest, most knowledgeable nurses that I have had the pleasure of working with. Keirsten takes the time to know each child so that she can develop a plan suited to uniquely address his or her special needs. If I am in need of help, Keirstin will gladly offer guidance as to which school resources are available. Keirstin's SMILE is as big as her heart, and she makes parents feel welcomed to be a part of the overall care and decision making process. It is my pleasure, to be able to express my heart felt gratitude for Keirstin. I hope she remains our school nurse for years to come.
