Dr. Janet Laning-Krug was nominated by her colleague, Gigi Whalen.
Dr. Laning-Krug is amazing! She has run the DC Support Center for at-risk students for 20 years. As a mental health professional, she saw the need for a small, inclusive setting for kids who may not feel they fit into a traditional school setting. She helped create a different kind of learning environment for up to 18 high school kids. She is well respected in the district and loved by her team.
The DC Support Center has been recognized nationally, and people from the White House have visited to see this program, as its success is unmatched. The students who attend are loved, nurtured, and given the chance to recover credits and graduate from high school. With a low student/teacher ratio, a social worker, counselor, and strong connections to district schools, these kids thrive during their 9-week time at the Center. They return to their respective schools having built strategies and confidence in themselves. Dr. Laning-Krug is the driving force behind this program and its success.
