Music that Describes Amy

Amy London was nominated anonymously.

Dr. London is a veteran educator who, throughout her career, has exemplified what it means to be a LifeChanger. Dr. London is centered on getting to know each student and his/her family.  A few years ago, she had a student in her classroom who had recently moved to the area.  Unfortunately, the student’s family was financially unable to return to their former town to get their belongings.  Dr. London personally raised $1,400 for this family to move their belongings to their new home.  On more than one occasion, Dr. London has sponsored a student to attend a school trip, paid overdue lunch money, and even helped families with vehicle repairs.  She does none of these things for fame or glory, but to help make a student’s life better.  It's not just her generosity that impacts the atmosphere of her building, but her caring attitude, as well. She strives to create a family atmosphere in her classroom where each student knows they are accepted, safe, and loved.  She is what makes the school a family.

When Turner Woods Elementary opened its doors for its first school year, money was tight, and teachers were expected to “make do.”  Dr. London purchased document cameras, overhead projectors, and other supplies so that the teachers in her grade level would have the things they needed for their classrooms.  She also wrote grants to help the school and teachers secure the more expensive items that were needed.  To date, Dr. London has written grants securing more than $12,000 for her school and school system.  The items include two SMARTboards, dictionaries, thesauri, learning centers, classroom games, iPads, netbooks, a TV, an online reading program, and a playground addition (which was written with another teacher).

Within the school, Dr. London is seen as a leader.  She is an expert in several areas of education, including curriculum, instruction, and educational policies/law. She's also a highly effective teacher. Dr. London has served as a grade level lead teacher and a member of the school improvement committee, School Council, and grant-writing teams for her school and district. She was also the writer for her school's most recent SACS review.  When a teacher has a question or needs advice, Dr. London is most often their first stop.  She regularly hosts pre-service teachers from the local colleges and universities.  With her background in curriculum, instruction, and instructional coaching, she is the perfect mentor to help the pre-service teachers prepare for their first job through student teaching.  She has extensive training in multiple areas of education and is an asset to the school and district.

Dr. London has an outstanding record of student achievement.  Whether she is teaching an inclusion class, gifted class, remedial class, or a regular class, Dr. London holds her students to a high level of expectation. On numerous occasions, her students have exceeded the state average for test scores.  Also, for several years while an inclusion teacher, 100% of her students passed the state standardized tests, including those diagnosed with learning disabilities and health issues that impact their ability to learn.  She works tirelessly with her students to ensure they succeed. She has a talent for motivating her students to work hard and believe in themselves. Her students leave her classroom prepared for the next grade level and feeling like winners!

Over the past five years, Dr. London has been instrumental in increasing student achievement in third grade.  She led two separate initiatives to increase students’ reading and narrative writing levels.  Dr. London provided professional learning for her teammates, which included training on the use of Lexile Measures, setting goals for students using Lexile Measures, and tracking student growth using Lexile Measures.  Under her initiative, the students increased from a baseline of 75% of students reading within/above their grade level Lexile band on the state standardized test, to 78% at the end of the first year.  At the end of the second year of the initiative, 84% of students were reading within/above their Lexile band as evaluated by the state standardized test.

The narrative writing initiative was also successful.  Dr. London provided the training for teaching narrative writing and guidance in the implementation.  The State of Georgia scores the narrative writing on a 4-point scale, with 4 points being the highest score.  The baseline score for third grade was 9% of students scoring 3 points, and 1% of students scoring 4 points.  At the end of the first year of the initiative, the results were 24% of students scoring 3 points and 1% scoring 4 points.  Students continued to improve during the second year.  The results at the end of the second year were 19% of students scoring 3 points and 4% of students scoring 4 points.  Due to Dr. London’s leadership, third grade teachers improved instructional methods, and the students improved their writing skills.

"Our country is filled with teachers who are making a difference every day in the lives of children just like Dr. London; however, not all teachers are LifeChangers. Dr. London is truly a LifeChanger because she not only impacts the lives of the students she teaches, but she changes their lives.  Because of her impact on their lives, her students have hope, determination, and a belief in themselves that will continue to change their lives forever.  This is why Dr. London should be the LifeChanger of the Year for 2021-2022," said her nominator.

Mrs London was my sixth grade teacher back in the 80’s. She was an outstanding teacher who loved her students and the assignment that God had given her. I believe it takes a genuine person to be a teacher and she is definitely that person. This biography definitely tells me that she have not only accomplished her assignment but she have went above and beyond.

We absolutely love Dr. London! My son had her for 3rd grade. She was always so sweet and encouraging, always smiling. I always felt welcome in our meetings, she really listened and always wanted the best for our family. Our son learned so much in her class, writing, expressing his individual creativity and also developed a love for reading. While he was distance learning during early 2020 she held meetings online for all the kids missing their friends, played games and was just wonderful to have during such an unsure time in the world. She is a wonderful teacher and we will always have fond memories of our time with her.

Mrs. London is a teacher who I am, and will be, forever thankful for. Mrs. London was my sixth grade teacher 32 years ago. The impact and influence from her has since lived on in my life and will positively affect me forever. She was a teacher that made me feel loved and she wanted all of her students to be successful in all that we did. My parents adored her and trusted her, she made sure to connect with them often regarding my education. Even after 32 years her name is still known within my family and mentioned often by my mother, siblings and other classmates. In reading her biography it’s clearly evident that this is a profession that she’s mastered and made for. She has a genuine heart and really cares about her students and their families. Mrs. London is just that ray of sunshine that made some of my darkest days as a pre-teen better! The impact that she had upon my life will never be erased! She’s so deserving to be Life Changer of the Year because she’s just that a LIFE CHANGER!

Dr. London taught my middle child, Michael in 2nd and 5th grade. Michael was born with a hemangioma in his mouth that could cause spontaneous bleeding which would need immediate medical attention. Dr. London took time to educate herself on the subject early on since she would have to take on another role, First Responder with this 8 year old boy. She was an advocate for his learning. She also educated us on programs within the school system to help him as a second grader, fifth grader and they are still in place to help him as a senior. Dr. London as kept in touch with us and Michael since she first met him 10 years ago. She goes above and beyond with her commitment to education and excellence.

Dr. London taught both of my boys in elementary school and one was fortunate to have her twice. They both have fond memories of her kindness and fairness, very unique for elementary age children. Dr. London was always responsive to all of our needs and always put her classroom children first. She wanted them to succeed as much as we all did. We were very blessed to have had her in our boys lives. This recognition is well deserved.

I’ve known Dr. London for about 20 years and even as a young adult she was always trying to help in any way she could and make people better anyway she could. She always had a way of seeing the bright side and making a situation not seem so bad after all. She is a staple at TWES and I believe the students that have her benefit greatly. Thankful for her wisdom over the years. Please consider her as the recipient of this award—she certainly fits the bill!

I was that child that she helped. She helped me and my family and I am and will forever be greatful. She introduced me to what hope and faith is. She is one of the major reasons as to why I'm so much happier today. If she had not done the things she done and made the sacrifices that she made then there is no telling where I would be. She is one of the reasons why I wake up everyday excited about going to school and excited to meet new people. She is truly amazing and deserves this award

When I read this I was moved to tears again. My family was the family that Dr. London raised money to get our belongings. Within weeks of moving to Georgia, my husband and I were both referred to an oncologist for cancer. Our move to Georgia was very different from what we invisioned. We had left everything behind. We had no furniture. We had no money. I was unable to work due to having to go through multiple surgeries. My son was in a brand new state and a brand new school. We had no friends or family here. Dr. London was such an amazing support for my son. She would constantly tell him she was praying for us and ask how he was doing. For Christmas, she asked me what the one thing he wanted was and she made sure he got it. Then she called me and told me she had raised the money for us to get our belongings. The kids got to finally sleep in their own beds and be reunited with all of their own toys. It was like Christmas all over again. But the thing that still makes me cry is what Dr. London wrote in my son's yearbook. She wrote not about what she was able to do to touch my sons life, but how he had touched and forever changed her life through the whole experience. She is a special person. A true Godsend who helped carry us through what was the hardest, most trying point in our lives. There is not another person more deserving of this award.

I have known Amy since she was a teenager. She has come from a troubled life and risen from the ashes. The fact that she has a doctorate is the measure of her determination and intelligence!, she has always had a bubbly personality and I know her students adore her. She is serious about her students, loves her fellow teachers and has a great sense of humor. Her God, faith and her family are her priorities. This spills over into her classroom which is both serious, focused and joyous. She would be an excellent LifeChanger of the Year for our country!!

Dr. London was a teacher of mine twice in Elementary school and she definitely made an impact on my life. I am now a senior in high school and would not have come as far as I have without the support that she gave me. She taught me at a young age that hard work and dedication was important to succeed and because of teachers like Dr. London I am where I am today prepared for college and what is to come. She always challenged us and made us think outside of the box which prepared me for so much in life. She is one of the most loving and kind teachers I have ever had. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to do anything for her students. She definitely changed my life for the better and I am so thankful for the tremendous impact she had on my life. I will never forget all she has done for me.

I always took my job seriously in the classroom. But, Dr. London had a heart-to-heart conversation with me on her very last day working at our school one year. She made me question why I did not toot my own horn more often. She told me I was one of the best classroom teachers she had ever seen, and it was time to let others know. Life changer? She is so deserving! I went on to become an Instructional Coach, Associate Principal of a large high school, and I retired this past year with the Georgia Department of Education. She made me search internally about who I was as an educator. Most importantly she made me feel deserving to reach higher. Thank you Dr. London!

Dr. London was instrumental in fostering a love of reading in both of Our children! She takes the time to explain and listen to parents and students which in turn makes everyone feel heard. She is an asset to any school but we were definitely blessed when our children were assigned to her class!!

It was my privilege to work with Dr. Amy London at Lewis Frasier Middle School in Hinesville, GA. We were a community that served the students from the Fort Stewart military base as well as the community. Since Dr. London’s family was also military her knowledge and expertise were beneficial is teaching, understanding, and educating our students that often changed schools and had to relocate due to deployments or change of bases. Amy is definitely a LifeChanger!

I had the pleasure of being Dr. London’s student teacher last year. I must say Dr. London is very deserving of this award! She impacted my life in so many ways. Because of her, I am a more confident teacher and person. She taught me everything about curriculum, instruction, classroom management, and building relationships with your students and families. Most importantly, she showed me how effective teaching is when you genuinely care about your students. Without Dr. London, I would not be the teacher I am today. I cannot thank her enough for that! She is more than a teacher or super hero; she is a life changer.
