Blake Burns was nominated by his colleague, Amy McCampbell.

Mr. Burns has been teaching math for seven years. He taught at various schools before coming to Northwestern. He has a great reputation throughout the area as a good math teacher.

"Our math program had become confusing and difficult for our students to understand, until Blake came to our school," said McCampbell. "He takes the time to explain the steps and concepts, and he works with the students to make sure they understand, without watering the material down."

Mr. Burns would like to upgrade some classroom items in order to make them more beneficial for the students.  He has already made a positive impact on his school's atmosphere through developing the math program. This has led students to build more positive attitudes with math.

Mr. Burns has taken on another leadership role by become the track coach for the spring of 2022. He will assist with middle school track and serve as head coach for the high school track team. He has already started to encourage students to participate in the spring. Mr. Burns has inventoried the track equipment and is in the process of trying to upgrade it through grants. He has proven his committment to the students, and he holds them to a higher standard of learning than they were previously used to.

Blake was the only student of his graduating high school class who never missed a day of school from K-12! He loved learning and the school atmosphere. Fitting that he became a teacher!

Two of my daughters have benefited from Mr. Burns coming to Northwestern this year. He makes sure they understand math and more importantly when they don’t understand something he helps them without making them feel like a burden or that they are stupid. He is an amazing teacher and we are so lucky to have him at Northwestern!!

I’ve known Blake since he was in high school. He has outstanding integrity, compassion, drive, and heart. As he completed college and began his first year teaching, it seemed teaching is what he was born to do. He’s going to be an asset to any community and school he teaches in. He is perfect for Lifechanger of the Year!

While reading Amy Campbell’s description of Blake, everything she said about him rang true. He was my coworker for four years at Macon Co R4. I recall Blake wearing many hats. He coached, started and grew Math Club, was junior class sponsor each year (I worked alongside him one of these years), organized, assembled, and sent home buddy packs, and so much more. With all of his responsibilities, I cannot remember a time when he turned away a student needing a little extra help. His love and care for students is inspirational. Students knew he cared, and many considered him their “favorite.” Blake cares for his classroom and curriculum. Each summer, Blake would be adding extra flare to his classroom. Whether it be painting the walls, adding/making decor, or placing tennis balls on chair legs. For curriculum, he labored through getting all of his lessons uploaded to our district’s program, TeacherEase. I’ve known him to be fully prepared and full of JOY in education. I’m honored to have worked with him, and not at all surprised to see he’s been nominated. Blake should be your pick for life changer of the year. He changes lives every year.
