Carolyn Vierkorn was nominated by her principal, Susan O'Brien
“Where words fail, music speaks.” - Hans Christian Andersen
This quote describes Ms. Vierkorn perfectly. She has been employed as a music therapist at Marion D. Crouse Instructional Center for over 25 years. During that time, she has consistently received highly effective evaluation scores, meeting the benchmark and curriculum standards for student growth and assessment required by her profession and the State of Michigan. She demonstrates all the positive attributes of a music therapist. Ms. Vierkorn skillfully uses music and musical elements to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, and emotional health.
Her school's population consists of 232 students with severe cognitive and physical impairments. Their ages range from 3-26, with the majority of students utilizing non-verbal modes of communication and self-expression. Music is non-verbal and multi-sensory, incorporating visual, kinesthetic, auditory and tactile systems. All students in the program have a group experience where they can connect with others and express themselves. Using technology and collaboration, Ms. Vierkorn provides music experiences to students that are homebound by meeting on a monthly basis with teachers who provide homebound instruction.
"I observed a lesson in a home and saw the student light up and engage with the music the teacher shared," O'Brien said. "Carolyn's yearly performing artist series is another way in which students have exposure and opportunity to experience cultural diversity and music theory through other artists and musicians."
Ms. Vierkorn's colleagues often report that students’ attendance in music class is much anticipated and a highlight of the day. Students and staff tend to gravitate to the music room, seeking Ms. Vierkorn for support and ideas. She supports classroom instruction by providing teaching staff with thematic monthly lessons utilizing technology for teachers to integrate music into academics. She works well with other ancillary staff and has worked with occupational therapists for co- treatment sessions with specific students. She provides consultation and direct support services to certain students based upon unique learning needs.
Ms. Vierkorn is often sought out by the Special Education Assistant Superintendent for collaboration and leadership in district level projects such as web site development and training, the Hero Project, and being part of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). She takes her work very seriously, follows district policies and procedures, and always sets the bar high for moral and ethical standards. She remains consistent in her research and organization, no matter what she is called to do. Ms. Vierkorn has also developed positive relationships with other local school district music teachers and students. As a result, they volunteer their time and talents with their school and music program.
Within the last three years, Ms. Vierkorn has used her influence and leadership to embed a MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) within the school building. She is working with the site social worker and building-level committee on this project. They are part of a three year grant to support and promote a positive school climate. Ms. Vierkorn is also a very active participant in the PBIS committee, which includes monthly meeting discussions, note taking and providing summaries at each meeting. She motivates and encourages staff to assist her in the creation of videos related to school rules. She also sets up themed PowerPoints and music for monthly school assemblies.
Music therapy interventions apply the inherent order of music to set behavioral expectations, provide reassurance, and maintain structure. Her coaching and support in this project has been a huge success, including supports for individual students in Tier 2 and Tier 3 level behavior support plans. As part of the School Improvement, Positive Behavior Support, Ms. Vierkorn sees several students for behavioral check-in/check-out. Very few staff members have the opportunity to work with all students and have such a positive influence on the entire school community.
"I have worked side by side with Carolyn throughout her career and find her amazing," O'Brien said. "She stays student focused and engaged in what best meets the needs of our students, looking for ways to improve their lives. Carolyn provides a leadership role within the building and the district. She exemplifies what it means to be a LifeChanger."
