Brian Fleet was nominated by Monica Aden, a parent of a student.

"Brian heads up the social studies department at Legend High School in Parker, CO.  My daughter had him for U.S. History and AP Government," explains Aden. "Our initial impression of Mr. Fleet was his incredible energy.  He really relates to his students and shows them why they should care about history.  He listens to good music, knows good TV, and even knows about social media stuff I can't name because I am not as relatable. This enables him to relate to his target audience - high school kids!  He is not just an unapproachable adult, but a trusted source of being relatable and understanding."

Then.... the pandemic hit. Students and parents got thrown into virtual learning, and nobody, not even the teachers, knew exactly what they were doing.  Mr. Fleet stepped up. His online resources were well-organized, which made things so much smoother for students and families.  He even recorded a video of himself navigating his own online pages for the students and their parents to watch at their leisure.

"Again, he made learning fun and worth the time," said Aden. It was no surprise to me that my daughter's grades remained high in Mr. Fleet's class. I never had to personally motivate her to attend online class with him because she didn't want to miss it.

"Then, the second year of the pandemic hit. This time, my daughter had Mr. Fleet for AP Government," said Aden. "Nobody thought this pandemic would last as long as it did.  The impact began to take a toll, and our daughter had some struggles that took her out of school for a short period of time.  Mr. Fleet was the first teacher to reach out to us and see if there was anything he could do to support her.  To me, this is why Mr. Fleet is a LifeChanger.  Yes, he's a great teacher.  Yes, he's a leader at the school. However, to care about his students as people and know that he has an opportunity to make a difference in someone's life is massive. He taught my daughter that people do care."

"Mr. Fleet doesn't just teach social studies. He teaches students about empathy, compassion, supporting each other, and that learning is fun," said Aden. "I hope all kids have a chance to have a teacher like Mr. Fleet.  He is a LifeChanger."

So thrilled to see Brian Fleet nominated for this award! As an educator myself I understand and appreciate the time, passion, and dedication he puts into his teaching everyday. But I write this as a parent of two boys who had Brian as their teacher… their AP Gov teacher. No offense to Brian, but who likes AP Gov?! Government can’t be that hard - or so we thought - but one look inside the textbook and you discover how difficult the material can be! But not only did Brian manage to make the class manageable for all of his students, he made it fun and engaging as well! That is quite a feat! My oldest, who tells me often that he does not like school, looked forward to seeing Mr. Fleet everyday. Brian makes sure he connects with every student. He cares about them first as individuals and strives to make each student feel important and seen. He goes above and beyond to make sure the kids understand the content, even pulling my son aside to check in personally. If you look up words to describe a teacher you’ll find creative, dedicated, passionate, caring, grateful, innovative, excited, motivated… this describes Mr. Fleet! Thank you, Brian, for being such an amazing light in my sons’ lives! They are forever blessed to have had you as their teacher!

I have known Brian since College and in that time, we have always been friends. Now that we are separated by time and many states, when I see him it is like no time has passed. With families and careers, we don't speak as often as we'd both like, but he never hesitates to drop me a line wishing me a happy occasion, congratulating me on a family event, or just being reminiscent or comical. I cannot express how much I love those little messages from him, even if I am lazy and don't always respond! He certainly is the kind of person who never forgets about you and is always thinking of you, so the words in this nomination letter don't surprise me in the least. I'm glad to know that there are Brian Fleet's in this world & that this one is making a difference especially to those who still have their whole life in front of them.
