Music that Describes Amy

Amy Ward was nominated by her colleague, Helen Lanthier.

"It is with great pleasure that I nominate Amy Ward for consideration as a LifeChanger of the Year," said Lanthier. "In addition to being an excellent school counselor, Amy demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to our school community, as well as to the wider community of St. Albans, VT."

Ms. Ward takes it upon herself to provide exceptional support to students and faculty alike. One cannot meet her in the hallway without being greeted with a genuine smile and wish for a fantastic day. If she discerns that someone is having a difficult day, she moves quickly to take action, providing them with key information, direction, or simply a warm hug.

Within her school, in addition to serving as an incredible counselor to students, Ms. Ward manages the "Sunshine Fund." This fund provides cards, gift baskets, and gift cards to commemorate important occasions in the lives of staff, such as weddings, showers, and condolences for the passing of loved ones. Every week, Ms. Ward also takes time out of her busy schedule to solicit "gratitudes" from staff members about their colleagues, which she publishes each and every Friday.

"You simply cannot imagine the smiles she brings to all of us as we read about all of the wonderful things our colleagues have done to help each other out during the week," said Lanthier.

As an Educational Support Team leader and a member of her school's Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Team, Ms. Ward goes out of her way to ensure that the education received by each and every student at her school is not only appropriate for them, but results in their greatest learning. She takes time out of her busy schedule to meet with anyone who needs to brainstorm and problem-solve about how to best serve students.

Outside of school, Ms. Ward's community service efforts are unique and far-reaching. Each year, without fail, she organizes her school's staff to take part in Operation Happiness. She also whips up support among her colleagues that leads to the donation of gas and food cards to needy members of the greater community every year. Ms. Ward is an incredible ambassador for her school - the kind of person who "gives to give."

"Why is Amy deserving of the LifeChanger of the Year Award? Amy epitomizes servant leadership and inspires others to give back and pay it forward. Not so long ago, I asked how I could show her my gratitude for all she does, every single day. She smiled and said, 'All I want is for you to pay it forward when you can,'" said Lanthier.

No one is more deserving of this recognition than Amy! She always goes above and beyond in everything she does. Her caring and kindness goes well beyond the wall of her school. She shows the same traits in her personal life as she does in her work life. Thank you for being you!

Amy volunteered to help with the theatre program at BFA for many years. She was integral in keeping the productions alive and supporting students. She also was the liason for theatre work at Town School in St. Albans. She organized and facilitated residencies in her school so students of all ages could access theatre. This was not part of her position. She volunteered this time. I have experienced her as a positive force in the community and at the schools. Her care extends above and beyond!

I first met Amy as a behavior specialist at my children’s school. Then I became her Children’s Nanny. Then I served in her office occasionally as a substitute teacher. Then I was hired as a full time teacher around the same time Amy became a guidance counselor. I have seen Amy in virtually every part of her life and she is genuinely someone I both love and aspire to be like. In every instance Amy is an example of hard work and grace- always believing the best about a person or a situation, but not afraid to get her hands dirty if work needs to be done. She somehow manages to fit a million tasks into each school day and she does it with a smile. When I am having a personal struggle, she acts like she has all the time in the world to not only hear me but advocate for me. Our corner of the world is a whole lot brighter with Amy in it!

She is very driven to make school a positive experience for all those who she works with on a daily basis (especially the students).

Amy's kindness and consideration for others is remarkable. She has offered wellness opportunities for staff, students and our community for years. What stands out to me is that she truly works from a strengths perspective. When teaching yoga and mindfulness she stresses finding your own way to practice and doesn't have a one size fits all approach. When you work or learn from Amy you immediately know you are appreciated and supported.

The fact that I am at central office, not even in Amy's building, does not change the fact that I know I can count on her. She steps up for the staff wellness team, always offers to help in every situation, and always makes me feel appreciated. How a single person can encompass as much compassion and empathy as Amy does into one single, positive, lovely human being is beyond me. She has more than earned any kudo's, and congrats that come her way. I wouldn't be exaggerating to say she's exceptional.

The many creative activities you plan for the SATEC community help us become a tighter and more supportive community for our students and each other. Thank you for your efforts. I truly appreciate them. Barbara

As part of a staff BINGO game of Amy's design, I wrote an encouraging note to a student. I noticed the impact it had on that student and see the note displayed every time they open their violin case. This in just one example of how Amy is a wonderful teacher and an inspiring leader to her colleagues. Congratulations Amy on this well deserved nomination!

Her genuine love and respect of our school community is evident in all she accomplishes. I appreciate her warm greetings, cards of support, wellness activities and love of learning. Amy - you got us through SATEC! You were there for us every step of the way! A call, a text, a smile, a shoulder to lean on, even connecting over an ice cream on a summer afternoon to stay connected, also to help preparation for the next school year and to help with transitions to a new year and new teachers! You always knew just what to say and how to help! It’s never easy for a parent/educator to hear of the struggles your child has on a day to day basis. Amy was very supportive and helpful when trying to figure out plans and check-ins! I appreciate you and so thrilled you are up for this special nomination! You deserve to be recognized! Thank you for being you and I am not at all surprised to see this recognition! You’ve already won in my eyes!

Amy encompasses such positivity and warm heartedness to all adults and children she encounters daily. She always says" Hello Sunshine" to me and it makes me smile! She works so hard to make sure kids needs are met and teachers feel valued at SATEC! Hands down she deserves this award!

I have worked with Amy for about 20 years. Amy is in charge of many committees at school, including our Educational Support Team, Operation Kindness, Sunshine Committee and others. Amy volunteers for these committees help students and bring others happiness. She is always willing to listen to a child or an adult and offer them support. Even when she is busy with other commitments she thinks of others. One example of that is last Friday I was leaving school at around 5pm and she was still working to help a family in need. She wanted to be sure the children got the support and services they needed. She is certainly deserving of "Life Changer of the Year".

Taylor A Goodland Posted over a year ago

Amy has worked with both my children and my students that I teach in-building with her. They always feel like Amy is hearing them and respects their views. As a staff member, I appreciate how Amy has done all she can to help staff morale as well as the overall school climate! Thank you for organizing fun activities and opportunities for wellness for us all.

Amy Ward has worked with my son a lot. She has taken time to spend time with him each day to help him learn and express his feelings and teach him new things.
