Ms. Taylor is committed to teaching at-risk students at Thomson McDuffie Middle School. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she is willing to do anything to put a smile on a child's face.
One way Ms. Taylor teaches her class is by singing to them about certain topics. She has won the Golden Apple Award for the CSRA, which honors those who believe in the true spirit of teaching. The news station surprised her at school and gave her the award.
Ms. Taylor was an at-risk student herself, and made a promise to her grandmother that she would help students just like her. She changed her room from the typical classroom to a comfortable and welcoming environment. She has a sofa, stools, bar tables, chairs, and even a chandelier hanging. Her students love the classroom setup.
"She is always trying to help others and has a gift for analyzing student data," the nominator said. "She uses this to drive her instruction, and her results on the standardized test are amazing. Students are making tremendous progress and passing the test. With this gift, she facilitates professional learning to her peers at the district and school level. She deserves this award because she will spend her own money to help her kids be successful." With little funding for school supplies and materials, Ms. Taylor often cuts back on her personal spending to afford things for her students.
She posts live videos of her classroom to show her teaching methods and how she approaches different lessons. Ms. Taylor is also an amazing entrepreneur. She plans events and makes custom T-shirts. Her community is extremely welcoming and count on her for planning and decorating their events.

I have had the wonderful opportunity of working with Ms. Taylor in a middle school for a few years. She was always WILLING to work with children. I always remember her creative ability to meet students where they were and EXCEL them beyond expectations. I've known Mrs. Taylor since middle and high school. She has always been a delightful and cheerful person to be around. I've noticed that since she's been a teacher at TMMS, she has thrived and the students love her class. She has created an environment for the students to have fun while learning, which I think is brilliant because it gives the students an interest in what they're learning while having fun doing it. With her trendy set of her classroom, she has set the atmosphere for the students to feel relaxed and not so tense while in her class. Qwensweler Walker Taylor has always been a "top-of-the-line," "best-all-around" math teacher. When I hired her to be part of my middle school team, she quickly became a leader among her peers. Data was her strength as she was analyzing her students' data each day and planning individualized lessons for them each night for the following day. Without a doubt, she was differentiating instruction before most people understood what the phrase really meant. Additionally, she held her students to the highest of expectations; in her class, they had to speak the language of the standard and use student academic discourse as they explained math problems and concepts to their elbow partners. This is my first year working with Ms. Taylor. She is an outstanding educator who puts her students first. She has high expectations for them and she goes out of her way to ensure that those students meet them. She always has a smile on her face, which can be challenging sometimes in a middle school setting. She definitely makes the most of each and every day.
When I tell you Mrs. Taylor got on my nerves with trying to be my cheerleader early in the morning during first-period study skills. She came in at 7:45 singing and giving her all at this time of the morning. Who does that? A person who cares. A person that does not just drag in and sit and let us do a worksheet. We received the same lesson as her connection kids did at 1 pm. She was amazing and when I got to the high school I remember all of the songs and dances we have done in class. It may have seemed so crazy at that time but I see the relevance of it now. I am a junior in high school now but that ALBUM we made for those years has helped me tremendously. Thank you, Mrs. Taylor, you are a true life changer FRFR.
Mrs. Walker is a wonderful and dedicated teacher who cares deeply for her students! She enjoys what she does and it shows. I was fortunate enough to hire Mrs. Taylor and serve as her principal until 2015. Mrs. Taylor is an outstanding educator. She consistently finds ways to motivate students to see their true potential. Working with students that have often struggled in mathematics, Mrs. Taylor helps these students finds success and develop a new love for math. She works with three different grade levels, having to collaborate with those teachers to make sure she is helping students build the skills necessary for that level. Mrs. Taylor's energy, enthusiasm, and love for her kids is evident any time you see her in action!

Qwen is a true inspiration to this community. I have watched her smile through some troubled times in her life. Every time I see her in different places she is the same. When you hear her story you will be surprised to know that she overcame these obstacles and barriers in her life. Her grandmother is the most influential person in her life. She loves her grandmother for "stepping in" and taking care of her after her mother passed 30 years ago. Qwen is not the type that like sympathy but she always willing to put aside her problems and help others. Yes, she is from Thomson and she desperately wanted to come back and give her talents to her community. We all know she could have chosen to be in another school district but we are very much thankful and BLESSED she has stayed here in Thomson to educated our students. All of my kids had her and I am forever grateful for the knowledge she has instilled in them. They are and were a hand full and I must say she had zero tolerance for misbehaving in ROOM 204 or 328 as my kids would come home and say!! But you could hear the passion and see the passion that she had for teaching. For a child who absolutely HATED math to come home and start singing a song on how to add and subtract integers really impressed me. She shared all kinds of rap songs on Facebook and even though she could not sing she would go to the school for "Pennies for Patients " and sing her little heart out for those pennies. That year the school raised over $2000.00 my kids said. VERY IMPRESSIVE. Walking around with a suitcase and standing in the hall singing the kids really enjoyed it!! This lady goes above and beyond her expectations!!

I had the opportunity to be in Mrs. Taylor class in 6th grade and now I am in 7th grade. When I tell you she made us work for everything we worked. I do not go into the lunch room for car riders. I go outside because I have really bad allergies. But I can say that a lot of kids come outside when they are not suppose to. But Mrs. Taylor keeps it under control. Also, I can hear the kids in the lunch room. Mrs. Taylor also also keeps that under control when she is in charge. Other than that, car riders is fine.

Mrs. Qwensweler Taylor, is one who goes beyond call for her students. She teaches them in a way that words can't describe. The reason I say that is because my daughter was one of her students two years ago in the six grade. Jayal had Mrs. Taylor for Math Support and I'm glad to say that she made a big difference in my child's way of looking at math. Jayal is an eight grader now and for the first time does not have to be placed in a support group. I'm proud to say she is doing great. Thanks to Mrs. Taylor and her style of teaching, she makes it easier and exciting for the kids to understand. She is a treasure for the Kids. God Bless!

I was lucky enough to have Qwen teach and take care of my daughter at the Montessori School of Augusta. Because of Qwen's love of teaching, my daughter, at the age of 1!, was already trying to say her alphabet and count. I feel that my daughter had a great head start over others, because Qwen introduced her to many things while under her care. Qwen loved reading to the babies and that love is still with my daughter today, as a 6th grader. It does not surprise me in the least that Qwen is still influencing young people eleven years later. Mrs. Taylor reached out to inform me of her nomination. She is an educator in my hometown, and I offer support on her journey of making so many impactful/positive changes in the community. It is a rarity to find teachers who are passionate about meeting all learning styles and level and creating a comfortable space for at-risk students- an often "forgotten population." From what I know, she is really ALL about changing lives and ultimate changing education as we know it, by being an innovator! She has a wide community reach in a small town and it's so great to see someone give back in such a huge way!

My daughter entered middle school barely knowing her math facts. She spent 3 years in Mrs. Taylor's "extra" math class. As a shy little 6th grader she never asked questions nor did she talk in class. By the time she was an 8th grader, students looked up to my daughter to help them with math. She begged to only have Mrs. Taylor for math because she taught in way that she understood. I myself have gone by her classroom and seen her standing on a tabletop singing and dancing. All the students were engaged and learning! She most definitely has been a "life changer" to us. My daughter has gone on to excel in high school algebra and will take geometry soon. Without Mrs. Taylor this would not have been possible.
I must say that I am absolutely proup of this young lady. She has many gifts and talents and one them that I admire most is her willingness to go the extra mile and find creative ways that will help our children learn.

Mrs. Walker-Taylor is a wonderful math teacher who has blessed students throughout the CSRA. I worked with her at Murphey Middle School and watched her change the lives of her students through math but nostly by beung an outstanding educator.
