Position: Retiring School Social Worker
School: Cheshire High School
School District: Cheshire Public Schools
City, State: Cheshire, CT
Lorraine Schumacher was nominated by her colleague Michelle Catucci.
"If you think you need a hug (or even when you don't realize you need one), Lorraine will be there with open arms," explains Catucci. "As our school social worker and drug/alcohol counselor, Lorraine embodies the kindness, resiliency, and hard work we treasure in the CHS community. She makes our school a very special place. She goes above and beyond to show our students, families, and faculty that she is here to support them, even if it's with tough love."
Mrs. Schumacher has brought initiatives to the school community like "B1 Day," which reminds everyone they're more similar than different and need to lift one another. She counsels students individually and in groups, teaches lessons in health classes, and makes connections with community resources. She tirelessly advocates for students and families, and she's the "go-to person" for so many students and staff members when they need to be surrounded by love, acceptance, and truth.
"While she may be retiring from CHS this year, her spirit and professional contributions to our school will endure for decades to come," said Catucci.
