Position: School Counselor
School: Stowe Elementary School
School District: Lamoille South Unified Union
City, State: Stowe, VT
Wendy Monahan was nominated by her colleague, Beth Bradford.
"Wendy is an amazing school counselor," said Bradford. "A tremendous advocate, she is here for everyone - students, teachers, staff, administrators, and parents! I have seen her positively impact many students through her group play therapy and one-on-one interactions. Her willingness and ability to listen and support are tremendous."
"Wendy has always been a learner - willing to learn new strategies or techniques to improve her practice and learn about our young learners at school," said Bradford. "As a teacher and a colleague, she has a very special way of building relationships with people and cares deeply about each one's well-being. I have had so many youngsters benefit from the space and time she gives. I have also recommended her to parents seeking ideas on how to best approach different situations with their children, either at home or school."
Ms. Monahan is accountable to the whole school, and she probably knows the names of every person at SES! She has been the one constant on the student support team for well over twenty years and never shies away from the tasks presented. Her professional knowledge abounds. Over the years, she has held parenting classes, written a book on play therapy, and guided many people (both young and old) through difficult times. Her therapy dogs have brought joy and calm to many students in need. When she and Lulu or Peanut enter the classroom for a guidance class, you can see the positive vibes come right along with them. Children respond to Ms. Monahan - she finds ways to connect.
"Her compassion for others and her commitment to her job as a school counselor make her a LifeChanger. We are lucky to have her in our school," said Bradford.
