Outside her primary role as a kindergarten teacher, Ms. Hidalgo is a single mother of two children. I met Mercedes long ago when we both were just elementary school students and lived in Guayaquil, Ecuador. She was always kind, lively, and a good friend. Though our time together passed by briefly, I only keep fond memories from those days. I'm not surprised she ended up in the States for she was always restless and eager to know what was outside, and being a teacher is like the perfect job for her, and she herself is perfect for that job. If anyone deserves to be the recipient of the Lifechanger Award, that girl I met long ago, my school friend, now a great teacher, is the one who deserves it.

I have worked with a lot of teachers over my 25 plus years in education. I have seen teachers that put in a lot of time and effort to make sure that their students reach their maximum potential. I've never seen a kindergarten teacher work like Ms. Hidalgo. We have shared several conversations, and each time I walk away with some valuable information.
Ms. Hildago was a magnificent Spanish teacher, because of her I was able to get more in touch into my Spanish roots and come to really appreciate learning Spanish and knowing how to properly pronounce words even if it was minimal in my Spanish vocabulary world. She was a great person to be around of and always had a bright and energetic personality around her and always made everything fun and serious when it was called for. Without her I don’t think I would have taken learning Spanish so seriously and it would have made a huge impact in my life, since in my field of work it has made it a big difference when it comes to helping out people.

I feel so honored to have had an opportunity to meet and work with Ms. Hidalgo. Her love for her kids knows no bounds. The relationships that she builds with her students are truly life changing. As a kindergarten teacher, she provides the students with a foundation that fosters a love for learning, increased self esteem, and compassion for others. Ms. Hidalgo speaks life and love over her students, regardless of their strengths and needs. She literally can see potential, rather obvious or hidden, in each of her students and she is a master of fostering their strengths while promoting growth in their areas of need. I have seen students, that struggle acadmically and/or behaviorally, literally transform into students that self govern their behavior and that yearn to not only be a better them but also to make Ms. Hidalgo proud. Ms. Hidalgo is an expert at utililizing every moment to facilitate and promote learning and/or character... She is a master educator; she excels in the area of teaching by providing excellent instruction with a positive attitude that inspiring for teachers and a blessing for her students.
I am blown away to know that in spite of any financial or personal situations she faces, she still comes to school and performs in a way that would lead others to believe that she has "not a care in the world". She is a true testiment of being a person of high character and values and it shows in the way she lives her life and the impact she has on those around her.

Ms. Hidalgo is the best choice for this award. Her classes are always the most respectful and well behaved Kindergarten class. They don’t start off that way. I personally have witnessed the growth of her classes within the 3rd week of school. Even the most troublesome student become one of the most well behaved student who is ready to learn. She always wants to know how her kids did in my music class. She is quick to recognize and praise her students when they make a good choice and I see the smiles that her students make when she does this. My vote is for Ms Hidalgo.

Year after year Mrs. Hidalgo voluntarily asks to transfer the students having difficulties in another classroom to her room. Then, magic happened.
