Cynthia Villarreal was nominated by her principal, Richard Salcido.
Ms. Villarreal is a fantastic educator who excels at her craft. Few middle schools offer Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish, but Ms. Villarreal has been rocking it for years! Not only do her middle school students receive high school credit after completing her course, but some students even receive college credit when they are successful on their AP Spanish Exam!
Ms. Villarreal has established relationships with the community and is well respected. Ms. Villarreal can tie in the local Hispanic culture with various events within the community. She puts on an annual salsa-tasting contest with over 100 entries from the community that is always a hit with donated giveaways. During Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), students display their altares (altars) for the community and outside agencies to vote on.
Ms. Villarreal creates life-long learners with her students by providing them with the skills and resources to be successful in middle school and beyond. She establishes rapport with local Spanish radio and TV stations that offer real-world lessons that students can relate to with field trips or campus visits. Most importantly, she does everything for the students to ensure they believe in themselves and make learning fun.
"Her catchphrase is 'Si Se Puede' (you can do it). It's a belief that not only her class embodies, but our campus and community, as well," said Salcido.

She continuously tries to give back to her students and their families through her annual Día de madres and Salsa festival in which the whole community is invited and involved.

The first time I met Ms. Villarreal was when our city office scheduled a baby shower for her and her husband who worked for the city. She had just given birth to her quadruplets. Four beautiful babies. Fast forward to our regional Teacher of the Year ceremony and this beautiful lady greeted me at the entrance. It was there that we reunited and I learned she had become a teacher. Since then we have become good friends. I am an admirer of her teaching style and focus on providing the very best for her students. I wholeheartedly support her nomination.
