Darren Lotter was nominated by his principal, Kerry Larke.

Mr. Lotter has been a teacher in the North Babylon School District for over 20 years, and has spent most of those years at Marion G Vedder Elementary School teaching grades 3-5. He is a memorable teacher for many students because of his sense of humor and love of the New York Giants.

Mr. Lotter has been a mentor for many students and is the co-chair of the Student Council. He has embraced the use of various technologies in his classroom, including the daily use of Google Classroom and the interactive Smart Board. This year, his class has shown outstanding growth in reading and mathematics.

Mr. Lotter is not afraid to think outside the box and has been an asset to his colleagues as the building-wide science coordinator. During the 2017-18 school year, he has been involved in the creation of a new Science Lab in the building. Mr. Lotter has also had the honor of being selected by the past two consecutive valedictorians as the teacher who influenced them the most. Both of them mentioned how Mr. Lotter motivated them and encouraged them to be the best they could be.

"What a great feeling to know that you have made such a positive impression in a young person's life," Larke said. "Mr. Lotter is truly a LifeChanger."

I have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Lotter for a number of years. We have co-advised the Student Council for the past two years, and it has been wonderful working with him. Darren has such a way with the students. His humorous personality combined with his ability to put children at ease makes it very easy to get things done and meet our goals. Darren is a wonderful teacher and is very deserving of this award.

I have worked with Darren for 15 years. I got to know Darren as we were working on the school plays. He is quite an actor! Darren is a strong leader for our staff and he leads his students in honesty and integrity. Darren is focused on each one of his students. I have seen him put much effort and time into developing trusting relationships with those at risk. Darren has gone through his own personal challenges but comes back with greater passion and perseverance. He is kind and compassionate, funny and firm. I recommend Darren for this life achievement award.

Darren has always been an influence on children. The oldest of five siblings. Every morning woke up smiling and willing to help clean, cook, entertaiNing his family. got the group together to put on little shows.. was a teenage councilor at the town pool. was asked to come back every year. He has two children in college, who look up to him since he has been mom and dad since his first wife was I'll and passed. always ready to help, no matter what is going on. Never complains. I know I am biased. I am his mother, but he was and will always be exceptional.

Samantha Berkman Posted over a year ago

Though the teacher selection is random grade by grade, I can say with confidence I was one of the lucky ones to have had Mr. Lotter as my 4th grade teacher. His energetic personality made learning exciting and fun. Being a student in Mr. Lotter’s class was unlike any other. He used his sense of humor to create an engaging classroom environment. His dedication toward teaching added to my desire to become a teacher myself. I wish him the best of luck.

While I am not a former student of Darren, I have known him for several years since my days as a camper at the summer camp where Darren worked. I can think of no better person for this award than Darren. Darren has taught me so much and has always been there for me, helping me when I needed help and making me a better person. To say he has had a positive influence upon my life would be an understatement. He is truly a great person, role model, and friend, and is without a doubt worthy of this honor. Thanks for everything, Darren!

You are the best teacher and make everything we do in school fun. You are super funny and the greatest teacher ever. When I first started fourth grade I really wanted Ms Keane but then when I started to know you better I realized that even if you don’t get the teacher you want you might like the one you did get better once you get to know him/her better. That’s why I think Mr. Lotter is the BEST teacher ever.

Darren has been a positive influence on my life and has always had a positive attitude no matter the situation. He became a part of my life and a part of my family recently and I am incredibly happy he did. Darren has proven this award is the perfect way to cap off his ability to positively influence not only the students he teaches but everyone he comes in contact with.

While I don't know Darren Lotter as a teacher, I do know him as one of the most incredible people I have the pleasure of knowing , and I am honreed to call him a friend. He is a caring generous husband and father and I know he brings those traits to his classroom. As an outsider looking in, and knowing some of his co-workers, friends and family, he has the ability to light up any room and I know that the students in his class are lucky and blessed to have this incredible teacher.

Susan Fico Posted over a year ago

Darren is kind, patrient, funny and energetic so I can see why being a teacher is the perfect career for him. Mostly, what resonates with me is how easy it is to talk to him. That must be a very important tool to reach children and show them the support they need at this crucial age.

Deborah Vail Posted over a year ago

Darren is a truly great person and a wonderful teacher. He is funny and smart and a true inspiration. The world would be a better place if there were more people like him. Those children who have him as a teacher are some very lucky kids.

James Thompson Posted over a year ago

The best way of describing Darren is glass half full. His optimism and outgoing nature sets a great example for coworkers as well as children on how a positive outlook can help lead to success. He is empathetic, supportive and progressive, always looking for ways to improve.

Outside of his elementary teaching career Darren continues to teach at hidden pond day camp. As a counselor who reported to and was mentored by Darren, I can say that its his ability to observe subtleties in child behavior and analyze them quickly is one of his strongest skills. He also is a true life learner. During one of our morning meetings he told me that he loves camp because every year a new situation arises the he can learn from. He takes that experience with him to school, learns new things teaching, and then brings those new ideas to camp.

Darren Lotter is a true professional and a class act who goes above and beyond for his students and colleagues. He is a team player and is always willing to lend a hand. Darren makes learning fun for his students and frequently incorporates sports, especially football, into his lessons. When I walk into his classroom to pull my math students, the class is always engaged in some sort of hands on lesson. Mr. Lotter's passion for science is evident on a daily basis as his students are often seen partaking in an experiment. Mr. Lotter exemplifies the true qualities of a lifechanger!
